Paris… walk along the Seine embankment. Visit Shakespeare and Co. Follow your nose into a side-street bistro, and spend hours over your meal. Lose yourself in the Louvre, pomp yourself in the Pompidou, or both. Say to yourself, "Oh, this is how public transit is supposed to work." Catch a movie in a small cinema. Or just drift from one baguette to the next. Hard to go wrong.

Fanfare on the album and the two tracks you played:

"This is a wonderful collection, and an important one. All of the composers represented here have in one way or another been associated with traditional jazz and military band music, yet they all received formal classical training and have written serious concert music for symphonic band. This disc presents several impressive works written for the latter medium by a number of America's finest, ethnic origins aside.

"Adolphous Hailstork (b. 1941) studied with Nadia Boulanger at Fontainbleau, with Flagello, and with David Diamond at the Manhattan School, earning his doctorate at Michigan State. He is a several-times prizewinner; his choral composition, Mourn noi the Dead, won the prestigious Ernest Bloch Award in 1971. His symphonic opus for band, Out of the Depths, recorded here, won the 1977 Belwin Max Winkler Award. It is a powerful and moving, 13-minute tone poem that traces a life cycle from beginning to end, a kind oí Death and Transfiguration in reverse. Also by Hailstork is Spiritual, originally written for four trumpets and four trombones of the celebrated Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble.

"The Keystone Wind Ensemble, sponsored by Indiana University of Pennsylvania, is comprised of approximately 50 players of woodwind, brass, and percussion. It is under the resident direction of Dr. Jack Stamp, who here conducts all but two of the items on the disc. Kay's Solemn Prelude and Dickerson's Essay for Band are led by Dr. Myron Moss, who regularly conducts the concert band and jazz ensemble at Southern Connecticut State University. Keith Young on saxophone and Robert Maglocci on trumpet, both regular members of Keystone, are cited with special credit in Nelson's Fugae and Bossa. Keystone, in conjunction with Citadel, releases one CD annually. For 2003, this is it.

"As stated at the beginning, this is a wonderful collection, and an important one. I enjoyed it immensely, so much so that I actually listened to it straight through three times in a row. With the sole exception of the Fugue and Bossa, which, as noted above, I did not much care for, this is all very beautiful, superbly crafted, and in some cases profoundly moving music. Performances are winning, sound and recording outstanding, and copious, in-depth notes thoroughly researched and articulate. What more could one ask for? This CD is not specialist fare; it is urgently recommended to everyone."

Honestly, I don't know that Donald Ayler had all that many opportunities to perform, let alone record, with an assemblage of musicians that wasn't all about his brother Albert or part of Albert's scene.
