Merrily We Roll Along is a mish-mash of high energy lunacy, reverence, and irreverence for forgotten pop stars, love for Saturday morning cartoons, and exploration of the side of Bandcamp where I seem to be the only one purchasing. Bringing to you the odd and the upbeat from a growing collection of pre-rock novelties, classic and neo-Vaudeville, jug bands, polka, klezmer, and more at the convenient hour of 8-9 AM EST, Merrily We Roll Along starts the day off with a little light-hearted musical tomfoolery cut with an occasional comedy sketch. It's organic, free-range, cheese with the occasional onion thrown in.

MHLee:

Hi everyone, bless the sun and Krys O. for the deliverance of this show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:49am
WR:

Are you on holiday? Is Kry O again in getting the bits into the stream? Funny how on holiday Friday I more easily wake and be alert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am
Krys O.:

G'mornin', all! The show will start soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55am
MHLee:

Yes, WR. I am on holiday today. The playlist has been assembled by me though but Krys O. is making sure we can hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01am
MHLee:

Oh no, it cut out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am
Krys O.:

Sorry for the glitch. Butt wasn't connecting. There was a long lag. Had to restart the file.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am
Krys O.:

The robot did not want to relinquish the stream.
Avatar 8:03am
TDK60:

Merry morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am
MHLee:

That's been happening a lot recently
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am
MHLee:

Hi TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am
Krys O.:

I wonder if there is a gap of silence on your file that tricks the robot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05am
Krys O.:

TDK60, WR, and MHLee, hope you all had a peaceful holiday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am
MHLee:

Thanks Krys O.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08am
Krys O.:

The 1951 film On Moonlight Bay is sweet. I like Doris Day. She survived a lot.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:09am
WR:

I am totally doing very little this holiday. Indulging in World Cup and listening to and downloading music. Going to get flu shot today is the only quasi-responsilble activity I have planned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am
MHLee:

I plan to get that and a covid booster tomorrow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11am
Krys O.:

Thanks for getting vaxxed, MHLee and WR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am
MHLee:

This song is also sung by Tiny Tim on the same album as the last song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am
MHLee:

It's from 1916
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am
MHLee:

Hi Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am
Krys O.:

Tiny Tim's appearances on the Uncle Floyd show were really cool. He would wax poetic about the history of the songs and Floyd loved that. I recall that Michael Townsend Wright sang with him too. There's only one video of TT on UF on YouTube. The UF contingent is strict about uploads.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:14am
WR:

I was pissed off that when I got the new covid booster a few weeks ago that hospital I go to said that they did not yet have flu shots for general public. Oh well, they get to charge my insurance twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am
Krys O.:

Hello, Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am
MHLee:

I hear a lot about UF in these chats. I'm not sure we had a comparable local tv show/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am
Krys O.:

That's a bummer, WR. I got my flu shot in September. They asked on the phone if I was over 65. I think they were out of the special vax for 65+ folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am
Krys O.:

My dad was a fan of Uncle Floyd. He was on UHF channel 68 in the NY/NJ area. My ex performed on the show as a musical guest 9 times. Might have been a record.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:18am
WR:

MHLee, you have consistently streamed enjoyable selections from "retro" bands that I had not known about or if I saw their records I snobbishly expected to be not worth hearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am
Krys O.:

Trad bands were big in the UK in the 60s. The Bonzos started off that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am
MHLee:

Part of the goal of this show, WR. I had a bunch of this stuff in my peripheral vision. I thought I'd see what I could do with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21am
Krys O.:

It's a treat, MHLee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22am
MHLee:

Thanks Krys O.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22am
MHLee:

That version of singing in the bathtub ended rather abruptly, didn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23am
Krys O.:

They ran out of wax?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:23am
WR:

I've watched some bits of Uncle Floyd online. Probably utoob but was some years ago, so not sure. At this point I would think they would want to have it on Archive dot org.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am
Krys O.:

@WR: You'd think they'd want to have it available for folks who weren't even born yet, but it was misguided of them, IMO, to report uploads. I think that might have been around the 20-aughts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am
MHLee:

You know, my dad might run the equivalent show. He runs some Friday music show through a local university.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am
Krys O.:

On TV, MHLee?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am
MHLee:

Yes. He used to do radio as well, but currently teaches broadcasting on television
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am
Krys O.:

Nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27am
Jan Turkenburg:

o wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32am
MHLee:

Robert Armstrong, R, Crumb, Bob Brozman, Terry Zwigoff
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:32am
WR:

Those Singing Surfriders were hot. I could almost smell the pacific island breeze. I've been to Hawaii only as place to change plane on the way to Japan. Both times it was the middle of the night. Pre- 9/11 so we were allowed to go outside the terminal and come back in. So an after mid night smell and light breeze is my only direct experience with Hawaii.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33am
Krys O.:

That's Terry Zwigoff on cello in that photo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34am
MHLee:

I've never been anywhere tropical
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35am
MHLee:

Terry Zwigoff also put together the Howard Armstrong film which I've been trying to get the soundtrack album for. Amazon is messed up and links to the wrong album when you try to purchase it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35am
MHLee:

That album is why I have a banjouke
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:37am
WR:

Is that photo of a Crumbless Serenaders or is he cropped out? I like that they go all in with the Cheap Suit thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37am
Krys O.:

I watched Louie Bluie a couple of years ago. It was on TCM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38am
MHLee:

@WR Crumbless, I can't find a half decent picture of them when he was in the band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38am
Krys O.:

Looks like there are some copies available on Discogs, MHLee:

www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39am
MHLee:

Might have to grab it. It's so cool. There are so few black-string band recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40am
Krys O.:

Crumb stopped playing with the band in 2006 apparently. Many photos online are from 2011 or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41am
MHLee:

I understand this was a Hawaiian record label but this song is so closely related to country it's kinda fascinating
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:42am
WR:

I've not yet seen Louie Bluie. I've been vaguely aware of it but haven't made the effort. Looks like making the effort will be rewarding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43am
MHLee:

The only songs I can play on uke are "My Four Reasons" from that soundtrack and the Lindberg Hop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am
Krys O.:

Jimmie Rodgers was a HUGE country music star from waaaay back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am
MHLee:

I used to preform his in the Jail House now... you just reminded me I needed to find my bluegrass recordings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am
MHLee:

I choose this version because for some reason they have a weird organ replacing the steel guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am
Jan Turkenburg:

What a lovely organ solo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48am
Krys O.:

Didn't know about Jerry Byrd. He recorded on Monument. I'll guess that my ex's dad, Bob Moore recorded with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49am
MHLee:

Bob Moore was a bassist on a lot of those old nashville records wasn't he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am
Krys O.:

Yes, he was part of the Nashville A-Team of session musicians and he had records of his own. He was also part-owner of Monument. Here's an interview where Bob mentions Byrd: www.artofslapbass.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am
MHLee:

I was a bass player in a bluegrass band.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:52am
WR:

LOL, when I worked in a record store in the early 70s we always stocked a few Alfred Apaka records along with the Don Ho records. Now that I'm not such a purist for raw trad I'm still not sure what I think of his singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am
Krys O.:

Bob Moore rarely played live, but he did back Elvis Presley on stage in Hawaii circa 1961.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am
Krys O.:

Thanks, MHLee. Twas a fun show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am
Jan Turkenburg:

delightful episode, thnx MHLee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am
MHLee:

Thank you! Still a couple more tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am
MHLee:

Can't leave without Aloha Ae
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:55am
WR:

Yes, lovely program, The only thing missing is a tropical fruit drink, but I guess that is on me, not the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am
