Yes, the letter variations are easier to make on a phone than on a computer keyboard. That is rather surprising when I think of it. ñ Hey, I did it! São Paulo!
If you keep the key pressed down (on a Mac), it offers you variations, and you key in a number to choose which one. Swèét!

Geez. Was thinking it floats perfectly - but it's rich @ the same time. Completely balanced in its elements. & it just dawned on me - that's kind of what I've said about 'Forever Changes' as contender for Best Album Ever. As if that were L.A. Tropicália. Not to overstate the comparison.

Thanks for playing almost all of that album, Gary. I think there is not enough of that on WFMU, as perhaps people feel pressure to play the newest and most diverse content. But sometimes it's great to feel the pleasures of a longer form.

Tangentially related: Do you know Justus George Lawler's book, Celestial Pantomime: Poetic Structures of Transcendence? It received at least one scathing review at the time of its publication, 1979, but I have to say it has been utterly illuminating to me about how poetry works.

We're reading torrin a. greathouse's Wound From the Mouth of a Wound, about which I have conflicting opinions. However, I was amazed to see that she hat-tips Ilya Kaminsky, whom I met many years ago at a gate at Oakland International Airport, just prior to the publication of Dancing in Odessa. Avatar 9:24pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Tropicália perhaps characterized by different approaches than the U.S. & UK might consider standard is the impression I get. Like the story Os Mutantes didn't know how Psych acts were getting the sound with backwards cymbals - so they used aerosol spray near the mic instead.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm

That's an hilarious factoid, RevRab!
  9:26pm
Dean:

So I figured, but I simply avoid that garbage. My lodestar example is Whitney Houston. I thought "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" was a treasure, perhaps the best recording of its year. Then she deigned to cover Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which flat out sucked. The mind boggles over how an obvious talent (of some sort) can descend from the heights to he lowest circle of maudlin crap.

i just realized the Rev Rabbit was referring to teevee program called the Voice. 'virtuosity' by itself doesn't equal artistry.
Avatar 9:35pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
StringOFperils:

The Voice is as much about the current fashion of television and internet 'influencing', than it is of music, even pop music. Personally, I agree with Dean, it's not worth the time of day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
StringOFperils:

But then....I'm not THEM
  9:37pm
Dean:

I believe "performative" derives from J. L. Austin's How to Do Things With Words, transcriptions of lectures he gave about "speech acts." Juidith Butler decided at some point to appropriate the term to suit her agenda. I have a lot of problems with Austin (and, after him, Searle). But somehow it now means nothing at all related to Austin's (perhaps mistaken) characterization.

Virtuosity is absolutely artistry. Mere flexing of muscles, not so much.
