I used to buy Big Takeover religiously at Barnes and Noble, but now a lot the B&N stores I used to go to are gone, and the kids no longer bug me to go picture book shopping at the ones that remain (they're now ages 16 & 19; nearest stores: Manhattan or Paramus).

So I'm 3 or 4 or 5 or 8 years behind on buying the next Big Takeover.

Last few shows:

Slift (two French bands, one Brooklyn) at Elsewhere: $27 ea.
Lingua Ignota at Pioneer Works: $35 ea.
Myriam Gendron and Bridget St. James at Public Records: $26 ea.
Porchistas, Elk City, Glen Morrow at Alan6's back yard: $22 ea.
Johanna Warren (from Wales) and two other bands at Trans-Pecos: $15 ea. (canceled)
PigsX7 (from UK) at St. Vitus: $22
Screaming Females + bands at WEH: $25 ea.
Big Joanie (from UK) @ Union Pool: $20 ea.
Weeping Icon + 2 bands at Alphaville: $15 ea.

Quick takeaway: you can go out and catch bands for $12, but stuff you've heard of and buy tix to in advance tend more to the $20-$25 range for clubs.

I play bass, and I'm a finger player, and I'm really uncomfortable with a pick. I play uke with my fingers, and I can play guitar a little, but never in front of people, because I'm horrible with a pick.

My first exposure to the dbs was at a name in a They might be giants song as a teen, didn’t hear then for years after unfortunately

I wish I could remember my first exposure to the Db’s, it could’ve been on my old 80s alternative station on Pandora. They used to play good college rock and paisley underground, AND YLT, before their curating turned all new wavey

rich the greeb:

That makes sense Clarke. I guess I’ve become so vinyl focused in the past decades I miss the cd reissues. But they aren’t on streaming. It’s so funny that ryko was like the cd label but they did a couple gray vinyl issues. The mission of Burma comp specifically

The version of "Thirteen" you'll hear tomorrow night is sung by Skylar Gudasz is mesmerizing. Would have been great if Chris could hade mentioned Skylar and a few other vocalists who have been with this project since the outset and are a huge part of pulling it off.

Still need the uk velvet underground 2fer and early kraftwerk 2fer

one thing that was good to get is when ryko put out the Chris Bell "album" on vinyl - i got several being on the label for a bit.

Florence Dore, who is married to the drummer from the dB's, has an excellent book on the novel and southern rock and roll.

I think it was 4 men with beards actually Clarke but probably in conjunction with ryko. I still have my copy. Revelatory. One of the times they got the mastering right

this lineup is a little different from The Songs of Big Star at St. Ann's in Nov. 2021, I think. I loved hearing Chris Stamey talk about the project.
