Men Like Monkeys EP

CNT

1983

We played this back in Nov 2021, but it fits the theme, so here's a bit of it once more under our voice... "Post-punk/indie rock band formed in Leeds, UK, 1981 and disbanded 1990. This casual trio - Jon Langford (guitar; also leader of The Mekons, and, for the wink of an eye, a member of the Sisters Of Mercy), John Hyatt (vocals, lyrics) and John Brennan (real name Phillip Brennan) (bass) - began by specializing in discordant socio-political guitar punk with trembling falsetto vocals; their career-long use of a rhythm machine which they named Hugo rather than a live drummer has lent a unique tension to the group's sound."

Gilla Band  Post Ryan   Favoriting Post Ryan - Single  Rough Trade  2022  Gilla Band are just throwing out amazing singles one after another. The album "Most Normal" is due out on Rough Trade...tomorrow...August 7th. On “Post Ryan,” the closing track from the band’s forthcoming album Most Normal, the Irish noise rockers deliver one of their most unnervingly even-keeled examples to date. Centered around a warped interpolation of the beat from Flock of Seagulls’ hit “I Ran (So Far Away),” “Post Ryan” is a soliloquy run amok. As if scrambling to ground himself, vocalist Dara Kiely describes things he sees—a balding barber, a snail’s crushed shell—before caving to “inevitable depression.” “I’m in between breakdowns/Constantly in recovery/I’m just the same prick,” he deadpans. “Gonna end up homeless/I hid behind the surreal.” The self-exposure is so raw that Kiely had to step away when he initially played the vocal demo for his bandmates. Gilla Band have written many amazing songs, but this one stands unflinchingly as one of their very best, if not their best. Fucking impressive.  *   0:02:46 (Pop-up)
Metz  Heaven's Gate   Favoriting Come On Down/Heaven's Gate  Sub Pop Records  2022  This release features Idles Joe Talbot on the A side...and the B Side "Heaven's Gate" was previously only available on a video game soundtrack. METZ is a Canadian noise/punk band formed in 2008 in Ottawa and currently based in Toronto. The band consists of guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkins, bassist Chris Slorach and drummer Hayden Menzies. Their most recent album was "Atlas Vending" released in 2020. They are currently kicking off their 10 year anniversary tour on Oct 13th in Toronto with dates across the US. Check them out, they are...amazing.  *   0:07:20 (Pop-up)
The Garden feat. Mac Demarco  Thy Mission   Favoriting Thy Mission Single  Epitaph  2019  Thy Mission was released in 2019 and has not appeared on any subsequent releases. We've played The Garden previously on the show, and they are an American experimental rock band from Orange County, California, formed in 2011 by twin brothers Wyatt and Fletcher Shears. According to Epitaph Records, “‘Thy Mission’ began as a demo for a future album. Interested in the idea of features, The Garden sent the track to their friend Mac DeMarco for his ideas. Together they spent a full day collaborating in DeMarco’s home studio in Los Angeles. By midnight a result was reached that they all liked and ‘Thy Mission’ was born.    0:10:24 (Pop-up)
PVA  Bunker   Favoriting Bunker EP  Ninja Tune  2022  PVA are a disco punk band from London, and this tune is from their highly anticipated upcoming album. PVA take cues from 808s and Heartbreak-era Kanye, Kraftwerk, and New York’s ‘No Wave’ scene of the late 1970s. The result is a live show that is unique, energetic, utterly captivating – and continually developing. Speaking on the track, the band says, “We started playing ‘Bunker’ almost as soon as the band started. Originally just a looped groove, it has evolved into the live track it is today through various compositions and outings live. The song tries to act as a reminder to overcome the want to chase things that ultimately lead to isolation.”  *   0:14:03 (Pop-up)

Nomeansno  Oh no! Bruno!   Favoriting Wrong  Alternative Tentacles  1989  Excellent song from Victoria/Vancouver BC's Nomeansno, a band founded by brothers Rob & John Wright. I dedicate this one to my brother. We both like the cribbage reference. "Nomeansno (sometimes stylized as NoMeansNo or spelled No Means No) was a Canadian punk rock band formed in Victoria, British Columbia and later relocated to Vancouver. They issued 11 albums, including a collaborative album with Jello Biafra, as well as numerous EPs and singles. Critic Martin Popoff described their music as "the mightiest merger between the hateful aggression of punk and the discipline of heavy metal." Nomeansno's distinct hardcore punk sound, complex instrumentation, and dark, "savagely intelligent" lyrics inspired subsequent musicians. They are often considered foundational in the punk jazz and post-hardcore movements, and have been cited as a formative influence on the math rock and emo genres. Formed in 1979 by brothers Rob and John Wright, the group began as a two-piece punk band influenced by jazz and progressive rock. They self-released their debut Mama LP in 1982. Adding guitarist Andy Kerr the following year, the group signed with the Alternative Tentacles imprint and continued to expand their audience. Kerr departed in 1992 after five LPs with the band, and the group returned to its two-piece formation for the Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy? album. Guitarist Tom Holliston, and briefly second drummer Ken Kempster, joined in 1993, and Nomeansno continued touring and recording extensively while operating their own Wrong Records label. After three further LPs, they left Alternative Tentacles and issued their final album, All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt, in 2006. They were inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2015, and announced their retirement the following year."    0:28:38 (Pop-up)
Gut Health  Inner Norm   Favoriting Electric Party Chrome Girl (7")  Marthouse Records  2022  The advance digital single for this band, who will be releasing their first ever recorded material on Nov 18 on a limited edition 7" single. (50 copies) "...Since their emergence in late 2021, Naarm/Melbourne five-piece Gut Health have built a reputation for their powerful live performances; an incorporation of experimental linear movements, danceable art-pop/post-punk and unfiltered theatrics. Encompassing varied sonic backgrounds from punk to jazz, and influenced by queer rave culture, their current members: Athina Uh Oh, Adam Markmann, Dom Willmott, Eloise Murphy-Hill and Myka Wallace, work to creatively merge these worlds together to birth a unique sound which mirrors the ethos of New York’s No-Wave revolution (James Chance and The Contortions, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Delta 5). Bringing an LGBTQI+, femme, and non-binary heavy lineup to the front of the stage, Gut Health are brazen in their message of self-expression. Staunchly encouraging the healing qualities of consensual rage and the visceral powers of the dance floor, they uphold a mentality that allows a cross pollination of communities to dance with one another." Gut Health (Bandcamp)  *   0:31:56 (Pop-up)
Gorilla Club (feat. Lisa Bassenge)  Allein Zuhaus   Favoriting Unter Meinem Bett  Oetinger Media GmbH  2022  Released Sep 2. There's just bit of a homage to Ça Plane Pour Moi in this one. Apparently, this is what child-friendly songs sound like in Germany these days, which raises a question: why don't children's songs everywhere sound like this? Lisa Bassenge is a German jazz singer, though this song wouldn't give you that inkling. More about this: "The children's song series "Unter meine Bett" has put together a best of from the previous albums. There are also three completely new songs. German singer/songwriters write and sing child-friendly songs - that is the concept of "Unter meine Bett". So far, seven CDs and a Christmas album have been released. The first best-of compilation will now be released on September 16, 2022. Among the 14 tracks are three brand new ones by Gorilla Club; Lisa Bassenge, Bernd Begemann & Belinda; and Deniz & Ove."  *   0:34:23 (Pop-up)
Gudrun Gut  Lover   Favoriting Moment  Monica Enterprise  2018  "Gudrun Gut’s story spans many years, scenes, and sounds, from the “ingenious dilettantes” subculture of early 1980’s Berlin as part of Mania D, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Malaria! to Matador into an expansive solo catalog of later work. Her talents extend beyond musician, however, to include founding record labels (the influential imprints Moabit Musik and Monika Enterprise), radio presenter and producer together with Thomas Fehlmann (10 years Oceanclub Radio for RadioEins), club nights (progressive electronic pop collective Oceanclub), festival curation (with Fehlmann/Meteo on MarkeB, or now UM-Festival) and the recent experimental feminist collaborations (Monika Werkstatt). Projects have included collaborations with Antye Greie (AGF) and Hans-Joachim Irmler of Faust, participating on the advisory committee for Musicboard Berlin, since 2016 part of the artist funding jury of Initiative Musik DE, performing at The Royal Albert Hall with Âme as part of an Innervisions label night. 2018/9 new celebrated solo album MOMENT with concerts in Saudi Arabia, China, Russia, Spain, Romania, France and Germany. 2019 she received the ‘Listen to Berlin Award’ for development and support of the Berlin musicscene. 2021 publishing of the Book “M_DOKUMENTE” (Ventil Verlag) together with Beate Bartel and Bettina Köster which was launched by an exhibtion and record release “M_Sessions” in Berlin at Silent Green – all about Mania D., Malaria!, Matador."    0:37:28 (Pop-up)
Lee Paradise, New Chance  Not Practical   Favoriting Not Practical (Digital Single)  Telephone Explosion  2022  Released Sep 26, from upcoming (Oct 28) album "Lee Paradise & Co." - "Toronto “cyborg-punk” artist Lee Paradise (Daniel Lee) has returned this week with another track from his upcoming album Lee Paradise & Co. The new single Not Practical features guest vocalist Victoria Cheong of Toronto experimental electronic outfit New Chance. The upcoming record will also include contributions for Carlyn Bezic (Jane Inc.), Jonathan Pappo (Scott Hardware, No Frills, Ducks Ltd), Scott Hardware, Isla Craig, Jay Anderson, Charise Aragoza & Lukas Cheung (Mother Tongues) and Daniel Woodhead (Moon King). Not Practical is another splendid example of this direction finding Lee tapping into some of his most synth-pop adjacent work to date, buoyed by Cheong‘s stunning vocals which are laced throughout. Echoed sounds whizz and whip around at the beginning of the track before clicking into chunky percussion, sci-fi synth and programmed beats flanked by repeated calls of “my love is unpractical”." 2022

"Berlin and Reunion based duo, Amine Mesnaoui and Labelle released their debut album on the 1st of April 2022...which was a collection of seven new compositions aimed to bring a contemporary and fresh interpretation to the Lila Ritual of the Moroccan Gnawa masters - also known as the Ritual of the Seven Colors" This remix is by the UK group Red Snapper, released on May 27. "Red Snapper are best known for their unique sound and passionate live performances where they embrace dark funk, hip-hop, dub, psychedelic surf, afro-jazz and beautiful, fragile soundscapes." For some reason I lost track of Red Snapper around 2000 and thought perhaps they weren't releasing that much... Ends up they've never fully really stopped recording and releasing since their 1994 debut EP.

David Byrne & St. Vincent  I Am An Ape   Favoriting Love This Giant  TODOMUNDO/4AD  2012  Marking Byrne's ninth studio album overall and Clark's fourth, Byrne and Clark began working together in late 2009, using a writing and promotion process that Byrne had previously used on his 2008 collaboration with Brian Eno Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. The musicians composed lyrics in person and via e-mail, which resulted in an entire album's worth of material. Byrne and Clark each wrote and sing their own lyrics, with the exception of "The Forest Awakes"—which Byrne wrote, but Clark sings. The instrumentation and funk grooves discouraged Byrne from writing his typical personal lyrics to writing about larger themes and Clark emphasized the art music nature of the recordings while composing.    1:03:42 (Pop-up)
YELLO  No More Words   Favoriting You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess      The band was formed by Boris Blank (keyboards, sampling, percussion, backing vocals) and Carlos Perón (tapes) in the Zurich in 1979. Dieter Meier (vocals, lyrics), a millionaire industrialist and gambler, was brought in when the two founders realised that they needed a singer. The new band's name, Yello, was chosen as a neologism based on a comment made by Meier, "a yelled Hello". This album was their third, released in 1983 on Stiff Records. It was the last Yello album to feature founding member Carlos Perón. With the departure of Peron, the band lost its more eccentric sonic impulses. Meier’s vocals have gone from wondrously strange to cloying; guest musicians provide vocals, piano, drums and guitar, making this of reviewed as a non-intriguing release...yet it spawned some memorable hits like "I Love You" and "Pumping Velvet"...    1:06:56 (Pop-up)
Kluci  Ape Shall Never Kill Ape   Favoriting Ape Shall Never Kill Ape  Kluci  2019  Ahoy, Kluci is an electro-punk band from Broumov, Czech Republic, formed in 2010. The Dickies  You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla) Version 2   Favoriting Still Got Live Even If You Don't Want It  Reachout Intl. Recordings  1999  The book Going Underground: American Punk Rock 1979–1989 describes the Dickies in the context of the early L.A. punk scene. Its author contends that the Dickies were "the best musicians on the scene and made good use of their talents". Also described is an early gig at the Masque in 1977. An opening band was so incompetent that "some punks turned a fire hose on them". The Dickies came out next, looking like "normal suburban nerds". The band "erupted in a tight, jackhammer, speed-of-light assault" of "ferocious... goofball comedy punk" which inspired manic punk rock dancing ("bodies carooming off each other"). The author claims that the Dickies' subsequent record contract caused jealousy among other bands, some of whom would say that the Dickies were only in it for money. The band's A&M record deal came about after that label sacked the Sex Pistols. The label wanted a replacement punk band that was more manageable (or at least less notorious)...    1:12:28 (Pop-up)

Toy's Factory

1998

A race, species, or other group feels morally free to capture, torture, maim, psychologically brutalize, destroy, commit genocide against, and generally toy with the lives of "lesser" species while still feeling morally superior by virtue of the fact that they would never do such horrible things to their own kind. Particularly, they would never kill anyone of their own kind, and look down on other races, who prove their barbarity through killing each other.

Primal Scream  Urban Guerilla   Favoriting Beautiful Future (Extra Track) / Can't Go Back (Single B-Side)  B-Unique  2008  From the timeframe of Primal Scream's 9th album, this is a cover of the 1973 Hawkwind song. Not every format of the album included this song, but it was on some of the vinyl versions of the album & also was the b-side from the "Can't Go Back" single. "It is the first album not to feature the guitarist Robert "Throb" Young, who left after the release of their previous album Riot City Blues in 2006 due to his retirement for personal reasons, and it is also the last studio album to feature the bassist Mani, who departed after Screamadelica Live in 2011, and then re-formed his past band The Stone Roses in the same year." The original Hawkwind version reached #39 on the UK singles chart before being withdrawn after 3 weeks." "Robert Calvert wrote and sang the lyrics, this being Hawkwind's only studio recording with a Calvert vocal prior to his rejoining the band as a permanent frontman and vocalist in 1976. At the time of the single's release, the IRA had instigated a bombing campaign in London and the BBC refused to play the single. After deliberation and the brief notion of promoting the b-side instead ("Brainbox Pollution", which dealt with the effects of drug misuse), the band's management opted to withdraw the single stating that "Although the record was selling very well, we didn't want to feel that any sales might be gained by association with recent events - even though the song was written by Bob Calvert two years ago as a satirical comment, and was recorded three months ago." Dave Brock has subsequently stated that "It was stupid to withdraw it, they were paranoid they'd get bombed. I thought that record was what everything was about in the 1970s." Calvert originally claimed the lyrics were a satire, but later claimed that "it didn't surprise me that it was banned by the BBC at all, in fact, I expected it to cause a lot of controversy". Lemmy explains that "We once did a benefit gig for the Stoke Newington 8. They were anarchists of some sort (The Angry Brigade) - making bombs in your basement and all that. Urban Guerrilla was about that. That's what Calvert was like." It had been reported at the time that Nik Turner's flat in Gloucester Road had been raided and searched by the bomb squad, but a 1998 interview with Turner suggests that this activity was more to do with visiting Hells Angels wanted in connection with manslaughter."    1:21:08 (Pop-up)
The Black Angels  Empires Falling   Favoriting Wilderness Of Mirrors  Partisan Records  2022  Released Sep 16. Some albums just *feel* like they're made for certain seasons. The new Black Angels album already sounds like that to me. I'm sure it always will, for here-on-in. "The best music reflects a wide-screen view of the world back at us, helping distill the universal into something far more personal. Since forming in Austin in 2004, The Black Angels have become standard-bearers for modern psych-rock that does exactly that, which is one of many reasons why the group’s new album, Wilderness of Mirrors, feels so aptly named. In the five years since the band’s prior album, Death Song, and the two-plus years spent working on Wilderness of Mirrors, pandemics, political tumult and the ongoing devastation of the environment have provided ample fodder for the Black Angels’ signature sonic approach." Black Angels (Bandcamp)    1:24:31 (Pop-up)
The Fall  Cowboy George   Favoriting Your Future Our Clutter  Domino  2010  "MES gives us more than we usually get in this interview, although he characteristically escapes by way of a non sequitur before he says too much: Q: "In "Cowboy George" there are lyrics about "unseen knowledge, unseen forces". Is that about mortality? Death? The other side?" -- A: "That’s, uh, very much sort of the case. That’s one of the tracks that was a first or second take. We done it about 100 times since in the studio, and as we listened to it before we did the final cut, said, "That is the best one." I don’t even know what I’m saying really, because I’m still on medication from the wheelchair. [laughter] Heavy German medication, you know. Which I’m not used to. But it’s still the same lyrics. And it captures it more, I think. It is a bit mystical, that one, yeah." The Annotated Fall: Cowboy George True story, Derek's brother is named George. The Fall  Cowboy Gregori   Favoriting Bury! (Single)  Domino  2010  A 2010 B-Side from the "Your Future, Our Clutter" era. We played a song from this album last week, too... Sometimes the themes of the week demand that you leave the same album out instead of putting it back on the shelf. + Pram are wonderful. "They are a band from Birmingham (England) that rediscovered the glorious tradition of British progressive-rock adding the casual and rebellious posture of the punk generation. They make up a combo worthy of avantgarde and jazz music & progressively ventured into dissonance, dub and electronica" Pram (Bandcamp)

Lou Reed  My Friend George   Favoriting New Sensations  RCA  1984  New Sensations is the thirteenth solo studio album by American musician Lou Reed, released in April 1984 by RCA Records. Guitarist Robert Quine, who had played on Reed's previous two albums, The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts, had had a falling-out with Reed during the recording sessions, so Reed opted to play most of guitar parts on the album himself, with the exceptions being "My Red Joystick" and "My Friend George", which feature Fernando Saunders providing rhythm guitar. Writing for The Village Voice, music journalist Robert Christgau stated that "instead of straining fruitlessly to top himself, Reed has settled into a pattern as satisfying as what he had going with the Velvets, though by definition it isn't as epochal. The music is simple and inevitable, and even the sarcastic songs are good sarcastic songs".    1:43:12 (Pop-up)
The Wet Spots  George   Favoriting Hello Kinky  Independent  2006  The pair presents an image that is vaudevillian, oversexed, and weirdly Canadian: Think sex club by way of Monty Python. Using a lively blend of original songs, audience interaction, spankings and singalongs, The Wet Spots draw their fans into a world where the libido is celebrated and satirized. The duo started playing together in 2003, and quickly became headliners at cabarets and comedy clubs. The Wet Spots travel extensively, playing shows across Canada, the US, the UK and Australia.    1:46:58 (Pop-up)
In Aeternam Vale  Give Me Your Money George   Favoriting In Aeternam Vale  Minimal Wave  2006  This compilation includes songs written and recorded between 1983 - 1986. At the basis of this band, a guy named Laurent Prot, a kind of equivalent to what Frank Tovey represented in England or Dirk Ivens in Belgium, an electronics fanatic who experimented all the sounds that you can obtain from analogical synthesizers and rhythm boxes. In Aeternam Vale was created in Lyons (France) in 1983 and is very much influenced at the beginning by punk-rock nihilism and aggressiveness. With the passing of time, In Aeternam Vale´s work remains astonishingly powerful, cold and caustic with its uncompromising minimalism, but also provocative and capable to smash your ass on the dance-floor.    1:51:14 (Pop-up)

Gorillaz feat. Little Dragon  Empire Ants   Favoriting Plastic Beach  Parlophone  2010  Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn was first introduced to Little Dragon through his partner Suzi Winstanley, who was a fan of the band's music. Yukimi Nagano had not known of Gorillaz prior to collaborating, and was initially ambivalent towards the idea of collaboration; when Nagano's manager explained that Albarn was a member of English rock band Blur, she expressed mild surprise that Albarn still made music. Nagano later explained: "I definitely wasn’t as charged as I perhaps might have been if I knew who they were. Everyone was telling me it was a big deal." Nagano and Albarn spent multiple days at Studio 13, Albarn's personal studio in London, England. The end result is one of Gorillaz best songs on arguably, their best album...a shimmery slice of melancholic, fragile beauty.    2:00:41 (Pop-up)

Hi DJ Babs & Derek!
I've been a commenter here once before, and I gotta say, since then, this show has been growing on me week after week with occasional surprises from the past (specifically, Late 70's & 80's Canadian acts I haven't heard from in a dog's age)!

Btw, did you guys catch Bruce McCulloch's turn as guest DJ on Evan "Funk" Davies' show? If you haven't, here it is:
