Favoriting Cratedigger's Lung with Rich In Washington: Playlist from August 26, 2022 Favoriting

A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

I've always thought of "Kids of the Black Hole" as pretty proggy, really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, the 'Jerks are/were playing at a rather swanky hipstery club in my town recently. I can't remember when or if it already happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
MHLee:

The beat farmers cover this yet?
  6:41pm
Dean:

I'm guessing this is the Dangerhouse single, not the album. Dangerhouse gave me a copy because I was working with Flipside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Rich in Washington:

So, FU here who's spinning lived in both LA and SF and got to see many of these bands in their formative heyday. He was also in the crowds of a couple of shoots of Decline.
  6:43pm
Dean:

Was just telling some friends how blissful it was to live in LA late '70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
Rich in Washington:

Not sure, Dean. All I recall is FU/Jeff had no vinyl but would bring in these huge Breaking Bad style gym bags jam packed with hundreds of CDs.
I was the fool usually packing vinyl records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Rich in Washington:

I miss going to a station but I don't miss having to park 12 blocks from the station and lugging all my gear and record crate from my car.
  6:45pm

(I'm in Brendan Mullin's book about the Masque.)

I see. Coulda been the album, then, or the Dangerhouse comp.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Rich in Washington:

Nice!
Avatar 6:51pm
Mr Fab:

it's funny, Dean - in them days LA was crazy, with crime rising as high as the smog level, pre-MTA public transportation was a joke, Hollywood Blvd was as tawdry as Times Square. I happened to be at the site of a shooting, complete with actual dead body. And yet I kinda miss it, I often think about it. I mean, I don't miss being near murder sites, but I do have a weird nostalgia for the excitement, freedom, and newness of LA culture at the time. Before social media and everyone carrying cameras on their phones, you could get away with all kinds of wild shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Rich in Washington:

I think at the top of the hour I might make the show leap forward a few minutes so it ends right before my show starts proper (I came in about 10 minutes late).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Rich in Washington:

I love how FU back announces like he's reading a police blotter, 80s punk rock radio style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Scott67:

What the fuck?? Why wasn't I informed of this extra Crateness Greatness!
🌏☀️📻🎶🍻😎🤙💨🍺
  6:54pm
Dean:

Tell me about bus transportation, Mr. Fab. One day I decided to take RTD from way east in the County to Westwood. Took something on the order of four hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Rich in Washington:

Sorry Scott! Sorta just randomly thought of it but then had to go run an emergency errand tight before so couldn't really 'promote' it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
Rich in Washington:

Glad you're here, though!
  6:55pm
Dean:

Just realized that the Radio Lost and Found playlist specifies that the version of "Los Angeles" was from the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Rich in Washington:

BTW: Anyone tuning in just now - I'm playing an old radio show from KBOO Community Radio from 2014
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
Rich in Washington:

@Dean: Probably me editorializing. I had to transcribe FU's ALL CAPS show notes, usually during the next morning. He would frequently not include the album so I'd either have to remember or just guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
Scott67:

Cool Rich! Glad to get a listen to your other life mate!
🍻😎🤙💨🍺
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm

so I can't vouch for the accuracy. There might even be songs which didn't make it to the playlist. That happened from time to time.

This is my neighborhood coffee shop of choice: https://s3-media4.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/8Qb7VUcnf_kgK1ztVJHlPA/o.jpg

That mural on the east wall is a collage of posters and flyers for late-'70s/early-'80s shows in SF and the East Bay. You'll recognize a bunch of bands, but hidden in the finer print are some doozies: Middle Class, G.G. Allin, etc.
  7:16pm
Dean:

To this day they play Rudimentary Peni, Crass, more recent bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Rich in Washington:

In all the nuttiness today, I forgot to either get or prepare something for dinner after my show. I usually prep a meal and then cook it right after my show. Dang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Rich in Washington:

Portland has some establishments with great music. In true hipster fashion, however, the barrista/bartender/etc. will sort of roll their eyes indignantly when you ask what that thing they just played was.
Avatar 7:21pm
Mr Fab:

I happened to be standing in line at a supermarket near a youngster, teenager maybe, wearing a t-shirt of numerous Pettibone Black Flag flyers. I said to him, "I had some of those flyers. Got 'em off phone phones, etc and put up on my wall when I was a kid." Thought he might have just been some shopping-mall punk poser, but his face lit up, "Wow, really? Cool!"
  7:21pm
Dean:

Yeah, I'm always asking at this joint. They either know off the top of their heads or refer to their iPhone playlists. The music all depends on what the barista likes and has. Heavy dose of industrial at 7am? Sure, why not?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Rich in Washington:

The 80s/90s was us wearing T-shirts of bands no one else knew anything about.
The 2000s are people wearing shirts of bands that THEY know nothing about.

Avatar 7:38pm

You hade to lug your records to KBOO, Rich? They didn't have much of a record library?
  7:38pm
Dean:

KBOO broadcasts over the airwaves? How'd you skirt the FCC?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Rich in Washington:

Not really. It was just hard to plan a show at home not knowing what was in the library. Most of the great vinyl had been pilfered by dirtbag DJs but they did have a very impressive CD collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Rich in Washington:

My show's during Safe Harbor (10pm to 6am) so I can play anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm

He was dead serious about biblical prophecy, despite being one of Mad Magazine's best artists. He also did religious radio in my town.

I didn't expect you to do Creed Taylor. But what is this going on with your stomach?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
Rich in Washington:

I ate a rancid jello mold entity
Avatar 9:08pm
Mr Fab:

Creed Taylor has all kinds of legit jazz bona-fides, but I admit when I heard he died, these were records I first thought of. The “CTI Sound” didn’t really do much for me. But these are really creative and weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Rich in Washington:

Me too. I actually didn't know that CTI was Creed Taylor International, even though I had a bit of familiarity with the label and its roster.
I also thought he had already passed away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm

I remember CTI as mostly semi-fuzak attempts by great players to cash in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Rich in Washington:

I am reasonably sure that I have some CTI records. I should go look.

Is Ralph related to Art?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm

Ha! I don't think so, chresti but that would be funny! He was a cool guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Zipperhead7:

I got here late because Ms. Zip and I were watching "Betty Blue" for the first time. Reminded me of my dad's advice: "Don't sleep with anyone crazier than you are. It can be exhilarating in the short run, but it will ruin your life." This has been seconded by a number of friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm

Art was from NY, not that far from Akron, but it seems like a thing that would have come up if it were the case

I remember first being introduced to Carney's stuff via The B52's so-so Mesopotamia. I didn't hear Tin Huey until much later but also noticed him on lots of Tom Waits albums.
Avatar 9:48pm

Totally agree about Ralph Carney and Tin Huey. Got lots by ‘em. Carney quoted my old blog’s review of one of his albums on his website. I was stoked: like, Ralph Carney looked at my blog!

The first Tin Huey album was a fixture of cut-out/bargain bins. Think I bought it a couple times. Always a well-spent 99cents.

I only have Tin Huey's debut album. I should check that out.

Don Bolles has been dropping in bits from “Instant Insanity Drugs” as long as I’ve been hearing him do radio, and that’s since the ‘80s. “His problem was acid…”
