Being an unrepentant racist, he gathered and publicized stories of violence and murder committed by Negroes and Mexicans where pot was allegedly the cause. The media gleefully provided support, with The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 essentially banning pot. Later politicians have Anslinger's racism to thank.
