This history is worth a read: syrianlebanesediasporasound.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Gary:

And another, although I think it's just a repeat: www.arabamerica.com...

THANK YOU! i remember Rashid 's too!
found so much amazing music there -- books too 🐱🐱
will not be home in time to listen live! but will definitely catch the archives!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Gary:

Hey there, Chresti!
  7:03pm peter:

hello Gary & co!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Rich in Washington:

Greetings, Gary!
Hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Gary:

Hey there, Peter and Rich! Peter, did you ever make it over to Rashid's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm caroline from atlanta:

hey all!
  7:06pm peter:

i never did, sadly! this was the one over near Court St.?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

Caroline, welcome! Yes, Peter, that's the one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm WR:

Hi Gary and assembled bodegans.
  7:09pm peter:

what year did it close? i think i recall walking by it when I was living in Brooklyn circa 2011 and marveling, but could have been during an earlier visit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Gary:

Man, that's a great question. I honestly do not know the year it closed. I moved to Queens in 2010 and I think it was still around then, but I honestly can't remember my last visit there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Gary:

WR, come on in!
  7:12pm peter:

whoa you had only been in Queens a year or so when we met up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

Yes! I moved to New York in 1997, spent the first few months in Manhattan, then Bronx, then Brooklyn before moving here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Gary:

I think my first visit to Rashid's was in 1997, soon after I moved here
  7:16pm rw:

Good afternoon! I'm pretty sure I can hear Gary singing along in the studio.
  7:16pm peter:

I'm seeing a Yelp review from 2012 if that's any indication..
  7:17pm rw:

He's a little off key, but he seems to be having a good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Gary:

RW! Yes, that's helpful, or yelpful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Gary:

I'm strive for being an off-key good time
  7:18pm peter:

yeah, I recall walking by after a visit to Sahadi's.. it must have been closed for the day; don't know why else I wouldn't have stopped in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Gary:

It seems unlikely you wouldn't unless they had an anti-Peter magnet pointed at you which also seems unlikely, so I'm going to guess it was closed as well

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm WR:

The Nagat al Saghira tracks don't grab me viscerally but do sound unique compared to what I've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm chresti:

And what a life!
  8:16pm Listener Gregory:

Gary, glad to hear you admit to buying a record because it was cheap.
I listen to this show for the same reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Gary:

Most of what I bought over the years was b/c cheap! Especially the CDs and cassettes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm chresti:

That's one of the bonuses of research obsession.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm chresti:

*cheap prices
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm northguineahills:

the only arab store i remember on Atlantic Ave was on the south side of the street, and by the 2010s, in was closed....
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Zipperhead7:

Hi Gary and Bodegans! Ah yes,the perils of research. Infinite regression . . . in an attempt to get all information on a given topic, you practically end up when the first fish crawled out of the water. And THEN there's the peril of being intimidated by people far more knowledgeable than you. I've abandoned a bunch of projects for those reasons. But any work worth a damn begins out of an obsession.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Gary:

Zipperhead!
  8:29pm Listener Gregory:

I can assure everyone that I enjoy this show a great deal without doing any research or, indeed, having any idea what is playing. Once I try to find those things out for some music, the rabbit hole of research keeps getting deeper and never ends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm drowsy:

Even cheap stuff can evaporate savings quickly in the name of science! Grateful that Gary and others share the fruits with us here.
  8:30pm Matt:

What a show. Glad to have stumbled into it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm StringOFperils:

Research? Just call it Search. What the object is, I don't know. Completion? Oneness with the tuniverse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Gary:

I have poet friends -- well, one poet friend -- who, when I offered to give him some music on CD, he looked scared and said, "No, oh, no no, I can't -- I would just be lost"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Gary:

Matt! Nice to see you
  8:31pm Matt:

I've listened before - but really think I'm catching a special one here.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Zipperhead7:

One project I wanted to write on was the Tower of David (Torre de David), which was intended to be the anchor of aWall Street-style development in Caracas. But construction halted and it turned into the world's first highrise favela. Media accounts used it as a blank screen to project hopes and fears regarding late modernity. It's a great story waiting to be told
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm northguineahills:

research? I've spent this show trying to figure out what happened to Atlantic Ave, like, wtf happened to Hank's Saloon? *sniff*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Gary:

Oh wow, Zip. I feel like I have seen reference to something like that, either there in Caracas, or Bagota maybe? I dunno
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Zipperhead7:

Yeah it was Caracas. If you do a web search you see some amazing pictures. Squatting/reclamation is such a rich topic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm northguineahills:

now i want an arepa....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

Yes, I dont know why I had it in my head as bogota
  8:38pm Listener Gregory:

I would save it for the end.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Zipperhead7:

I'm with Gregory -- good to hiphop off to bed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm drowsy:

to be chuffed is a squad goal here.
  8:44pm Listener Gregory:

This is much like the primary election I just voted in, where I was the only voter for some contests. High bailiff is an important position, people!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Gary:

Haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Gary:

Hey, while I have you kids here, how do you feel about me doing a two- or three-show run of nothing but African 78s? Like, six or nine hours of that spread out over three weeks. Hot? or Bot?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Zipperhead7:

That would be supercool, Gary! Hot hot hot!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Gary:

The importance of voting in action
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm StringOFperils:

re: hank’s saloon, recently went to a show at roulette after a bunch of years and was sad to see hanks saloon boarded up. had the pleasure of seeing wfmu’s own jesse jarnow play a gig there.x

@Gary, love the idea of African 78s show(s). I’m

im planning to play hooky from work tomorrow and check out African Record Center. anyone ever been?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

Zzz, nice! Yes, I've been there, but not for maybe 10 years.
Avatar 9:00pm tim abdellah:

African 78s sounds fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm northguineahills:

@zzz: when I lived in Bed-Stuy, I never ventured that far over (this was 2000-2003) by the 2010s when i biked over there regularly, it was verboten for me to buy recs.,

however, on fulton st, there used to be Kulture Lion, which had the best jamaican vinyl selection on Fulton and Washington (which sadly closed around 2006).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gary:

I should say that they are not MY 78s, but compilations drawn from collections by people what collect 78s (i.e., not me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm northguineahills:

is 3am Behkeh Bil Sokout part of the klf collective (3am eternal)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Gary:

Haha, I misposted that, NGH
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm zzz:

have also been wanting to check out Moodies in the bronx, last time i had some time and went over it was closed
