Avatar 9:06pm Brainiac from Neuron 3:

I crewed a Santana concert @ the Ford Amphitheater back in 2006. I was asked to be a cable pager for the pit cameraman during the show. The cameraman told me to follow him up on the stage for the first song as he took an audience shot, then we jumped back down into the pit. He told me to sit on the back of the barricade until the last song where we'll jump back up. I got to watch the show 10 feet in front of Carlos & Chester Thompson. Melted my face and I got paid. Good times. Samba Pa Ti was awesome!

Does Watt play out of tune on purpose when he pays these songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm ultradamno:

It almost seemed commercial at the time, which listening to this sounds insane, but there you go...

Hiya prof!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm prof.fuzz:

flipper usually cleaned up a bit in the studio, but this is still a pretty wild record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm ultradamno:

Under The Big Black Sun was called a sellout back then too though...perspective of time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm McGroovey:

That is to say, if Watt doesn't play out of tune, it might not quite sound like Flipper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm ultradamno:

Watt seems like he wouldn't be so fastidious that he couldn't get into the spirit of the thing...

similar vibe to Wounds from SF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm ultradamno:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm ultradamno:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm prof.fuzz:

agreed, ultraD. i'd be all over a reissue of that Wounds 12"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm ultradamno:

@Steve Cool. I remember sitting next to...I'm guessing a manager or somebody with them who was pretty nice. I yelled for Brainwash and he said "they won't do it" well, I didn't really think they would, it was kind of a trolling request, but we had a nice talk. I'm still not sure if Dead Boy is a song or an improvised outburst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm prof.fuzz:

Doh! just checked the tracklist for Let Them Eat Jellybeans and realized that BPeople were right before Wounds on side two. No wonder my brain made that connection again.

Speaking of The Who twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Stevel:

Punk friends in Madison talked of a Chicago Flipper gig where someone asked for Sex Bomb, and they responded by clearing the club within minutes with noise. Not sure if it was legend or an eye-witness account, but it was awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm ultradamno:

That sounds familiar...I remember hearing of a show where they just started screaming "GO HOME WE'RE NOT GOING TO PLAY ANYMORE"....maybe the same show...
Avatar 10:24pm SamTheRam:

  10:25pm wearpants:

Speaking of bands of last week, I saw Anteloper at a DIY punk space in Pittsburgh after hearing them on your show. So awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm TomDash:

HA! That's why I don't see it! (egg on face...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Stevel:

UD: At the end of a really great Replacements show in '83-is, Madison, the band received a strong ovation at the end of the set. As Paul Westerberg was walking by the main mike, heading for the wings, some even shouted 'encore, encore!"

"Puh-leeeze" he spat into the mike, and kept moving. I laughed so hard! One definer of 'punk' is doing things on your own terms, no matter the cost. Obviously, Flipper is the patron saint of that shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm TomDash:

nice @wearpants! I love Jaimie Branch! Anteloper is playing here next week, but i think it is tomorrow...and I'm working...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm McGroovey:

@Stevel My college friends and I used to use Sex Bomb (well, the whole Generic album) to clear the annoying people out of our parties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm McGroovey:

Or maybe we were the annoying people, and we were getting rid of the normal people by playing Flipper. Whatever. Same thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm prof.fuzz:

@mcG: then the only ones left at the party are the real weirdos...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Stevel:

McGroovey: I did that at parties in Jr. High with Alice Cooper records, but I didn't really understand (or care) that I had broken the vibe.

I think Sex Bomb is one of the funniest songs I've ever heard and a perfect sendup of pop music. Fucking hilarious [car engine cranking]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm ultradamno:

I have cleared parties with Birthday Party and Foetus but I honestly thought it was fun music for a party
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Stevel:

Intentionally annoying was definitely a stance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm McGroovey:

The Flowers of Romance was also a useful room clearer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm ultradamno:

Mission Of Burma used No New York to weed out squares for band member auditions early on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm McGroovey:

Cover band idea: The whole Flowers is Romance album, as Flipper would play it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm prof.fuzz:

i may have mentioned this last week, but last halloween we played a show and did a livestream of flipper covers, all run through our particular blender. if anyone wants to listen, message me through my profile and i'll send a link. we also have three flipper covers on our last two albums (2 on 1, and 1 on another).
  10:49pm wearpants:

@TomDash the start time of her set was so late, like 1130, b/c 20 something year old punks booked the show? I don’t know, it was well past my bedtime to begin with but totally worth it I was a wreck the next day though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Stevel:

  11:13pm ?:

Does anyone know why The DJ after this show (Small Change) always plays the same sound effect during the songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm TomDash:

Hey folks, sorry been a little quiet...this is one of the shows that is coming together song-by-song! ha...thanks for hanging, as always!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm TroyD8:

Really enjoying the show tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm McGroovey:

I actually listen to Small Change up to the moment when he plays that sound effect the first time. Then I turn it off. It annoys me. He plays great music, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm ultradamno:

I don't know what you guys are talking about but I'm guessing it's no social media airhorn!
  11:25pm ?:

He does play great stuff but the sound effects ruin it for me. Just wondering if it is a underground thing or what.
  11:27pm ?:

Some sort of air horn.
  11:32pm David Watts:

hey! cool show! a new Wednesday night tradition. thanks for playing new tunes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm McGroovey:

It's sort of a seventies disco sound effect. A boy air-horny, but higher-pitched. I think it's in at least one Tom Tom Club song, and maybe some Grandmaster Flash songs and things like that from the early eighties and probably later seventies. He plays it during songs, at inappropriate (to my ears) moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm McGroovey:

*A bit air-horny...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm McGroovey:

I just listened to The Message (Grandmaster Flash), and that sound effect is repeated all the way through it, though it's not very high on the mix --at least on the version I listened to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm McGroovey:

(With apologies to Santana that i was listening to Genius of Love and The Jungle instead)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm ultradamno:

I have no complaints about any part of The Message
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm McGroovey:

No, it's appropriate in The Message, but not so much when dropped into the middle of, say, any random song.
  11:47pm ?:

Thanks for the explanation McGroovey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm McGroovey:

I meant that i was listening to Genius of Love and The Message (of course).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm McGroovey:

"Inappropriate" in this context means "annoying to me, in my opinion", not "just totally morally wrong wrong wrong and it should be illegal!!!!".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm TomDash:
