Let's see... six years ago? It was for five days, and we stayed with our friend, Ash, who had an extra room, lived alone, and loved the company. We spent most of it eating and going to museums. And they discovered I hadn't seen Silence of the Lambs, so I remember they made me watch it suddenly in the middle of our visit.

Great pizza. Even better museums. And the train was rad. (I love trains.)

@Austin: Three things I loved growing up in Chicago. Especially the trains. They are so sad in SowCal. "More Music" was used even on stations with "More Commercials". WCFL was notorious for speeding up records to fit in more songs
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:07pm
Austin Rich:

Ha! I have read about stations who used all sorts of tricks in the 70s and 80's to stand out. Speeding up the records is hilarious! I wonder how many folks noticed?

The thing I took away from Chicago: we BARELY scratched the surface. It's on our list of future vacation spots; I only visited two record stores, and that felt like a poor job on my part.

@will plus we can hear songs that have bad words in them
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm

PDX doesn't really go in for the HUGE building game, so seeing all the massive buildings was really impressive to me. Felt like I was in a "real" city.
Avatar 🎸 8:25pm

I went to Reckless, even got a tote! We went somewhere else.... but it escapes my memory now. Maybe a thrift store, but that didn't really count.

Will have to find Rolling Stone Records the next time I go.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
Austin Rich:

I understand why they have to bleep, but I'm glad I'm on the Sheena stream. I don't really do a lot of swearing in general, and usually only for comic effect. I spent so long on regular radio that I think I've just edited out those words, unless I really lean in on them.

But for the songs, I'm glad I don't have to edit.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Austin Rich:

We took a lot of buses and trains when I visited, and we loved it. But I do remember one night, we finally caved in and started using e-cars, which were fairly new at the time. But I think the added cost was worth it, in the time saved. That town is bigger than I'm used to.

@MarkTime, do you remember in the early 70s, answering the phone "WMAQ is gonna make me rich!"?
Avatar 🎸 8:38pm

Eek ... yes I was not a fan of WMAQ in those days. Especially when visiting or calling Grandma Harriett who insisted on answering the phone "WMAQ is gonna make me rich"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm

I can't remember if I asked already, but Mark: what is your oldest air-check?
Avatar 🎸 8:40pm

She had not been a country music fan, but they would toss in stuff like Bobby Vinton Melody of Love, Frank Mills Music Box Dancer, and whomever sang "La Paloma Blanca"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Austin Rich:

I think you can find a little bit of Arthur Godfrey awkwardly DJing at the beginning of the 1939 Complete Broadcast day, which is a treat if you've never heard it:
