I think the production team at Box 13 are playing the theme music from a record when they produce this show. As the episodes wear on, it seems like the theme music transitions have more "static" and "record pop" than the rest of the show.

There was an interesting episode of Radiolab that discusses what working conditions was like for Sandhogs. But I think this episode of Box 13 acutally gives you all the details you need for the plot.

Kirk does have a certain way with dialog. I'm sure he learned from old radio shows.

Something tells me Holiday's being set up. Reminds me of the plot of "Lost". They send him deep, literally, so then he's stuck at depth for a period of time to decompress.

OK, then I'm guessing Angus has his operation double-insured and wants Holiday as a false witness to sabotage that Angus himself set up.

This is a sort of obscure profession, and you can tell that the writer of this episode really wanted to show their work. I suspect in 1949, there probably weren't a lot of public awareness of what this kind of job was like. I have to commend the writer for laying out the story and the clues in a way that works really well for me.

It's been established that Dan served in The War, so certainly he's done all sorts of intense manual labor in his time. And his adventures through Box 13 have probably kept him in shape. I think Dan could probably hold his own with the Sandhogs, though would probably be pretty tried at the end of each day, as it's not something he's familiar with.

The sound quality is a little poor this week. I did as much as I could to do a little EQ, and increase the signal. It sort of works... but there will be parts that are just a little muddy. Sorry about that.
  6:32pm
Listener Robert:

Charles, that could be fun -- like Suzie as Jeeves contradicting Holiday's unreliable narration. A LOT of stories are fun retold that kind of way, subverting the original, telling you what REALLY happened.

Charles & Robert: I've been meaning to run, "Candy Matson" on this show, a detective show with all the genders swapped. It didn't run long, but it is VERY good, and has some nice, "bet you didn't expect that guy / gal to behave like that," moments.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm

Sort of like if Suzy wrote Box 13. Which I also think would be a great show.

Since this show aired in December, I'm sure listeners at home were excited to hear a story that was set in a more temperate climate.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Austin Rich:

A lot of times, "The Voyage of The Scarlett Queen," can take on the quality of a "noir set at sea." Many of the stories mimic a lot of typical detective of noir type set-ups. But I feel like this one does have the vibe of a sea-adventure more than a "noir" tale.

I'm not sure anyone explicitly says that this show is a noir, but it does use the, "everyman in a strange situation," sort of format often. (A noir trope, for sure.)

Avatar 7:33pm
Good Ol' Charles:

So you're saying this version's different from the one played before?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Austin Rich:

I haven't done a side-by-side, but this is the version that aired on this date, according to this official broadcast logs. Some local stations would re-run the old transcription discs whenever, but this one was re-mounted from the same old script. (To my ear and memory, I'm sure it's slightly different... but I'm not exactly sure what is different about it.)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Austin Rich:

It would make sense, in the modern day, to just call every station and ask them to re-air the old episode. Except, in those days... not every station kept the transcription discs after they aired the show. (Some went straight to the bin.) So if they wanted an specific story to be re-aired, they would have to act out a new version.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Austin Rich:

Some might say: why not just send out new copies of the old episode? Well, they already did... they only made enough to ship out, and no more. (And, in some cases, the people who made the show wouldn't keep old show recordings just to make new copies for syndication purposes.) So it was easier to make a new one, than to try to copy an old one.
Avatar 7:38pm
Good Ol' Charles:

That's crazy! Can you imagine doing this with television shows?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Austin Rich:

With many radio shows, the makers never believed there would be a recording of the show that would be saved for the future. While there have been many people who worked at stations and preserved old shows themselves, a lot of what exists now was home-recorded by listeners at home, and saved for the future that way.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Austin Rich:

re: TV Shows. This was pretty common in the old days. Here's a very interesting wikipedia article on the subject:

en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Austin Rich:

After shows were aired once or twice, many tapes were wiped so the network could record and make a new TV show. This was done for years, until it occurred to some folks that we should start saving things.

The BBC most famously wiped a bunch of Dr. Who episodes in the old days... and many, many other well-loved shows.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Austin Rich:

Here's an article about all the shows that the BBC or other English TV stations wiped intentionally, to many folks regret.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
