Evening Mark and all Technoids.

Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Handy Haversack:

Robm, ultradamno, David, Franco, Fredericks, tim, WHHenry: hey there!

ultradamno, not sure if you heard, but Adriene will be doing a three-hour fill-in for Olivia next week before Techtonic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm ultradamno:

Fine John Oliver segment last night on the big tech guy's anti-competitive behavior and also a great Vice (on Showtime) segment on the predatory Axie game

@Handy Hiya! and no I had not, thank you!
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Webhamster Henry:

Here's an all-purpose excuse: Too much traffic, please try again.
Avatar 🤖 6:07pm Bas NL:

Hi Mark! Hi Techcats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy @Robm @ultra @DiL @FrancoT @Fredericks @TimVonWash @Webham @Bas welcome! Thanks for joining!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Mark Hurst:

@ultra yes the John Oliver piece is one of the items that I might mention briefly after the interview, time available. I might need to spend more time on the topic in a future show - Big Tech antitrust legislation has a real shot for the first time, but it also could fail...
  6:09pm kevlicki:

Hi all! What have I missed so far?
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Handy Haversack:

Tidal currents are no joke in that river.

The East River - Mark's favorite place to chuck tech devices into. Coincidence that Mark chose this body of water? Hmmmmm.....
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm PaulRobeson1922:

@PaulR hello hello hello

Hi chresti
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mark. The Pad-Man game for Atari was beyond lame. What a disappointment.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Handy Haversack:

tim, I have seen side-scan sonar of the river bottom, and it's surprisingly clean! Only really heavy things seem to stick around. Everything else is whooshed out into the Atlantic or Long Island Sound. So look for Air Buds and tablets in Flushing Bay and Coney Island!
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Pomme d'Or:

Good evening Mark & Jennifer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Mark Hurst:

@KfHP I remember it so well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Mark Hurst:

@Pomme hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Folsom:

@KfHP Adventure or Yar's Revenge are the best
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy that's pretty cool (the side-scan, not the e-junk tumbling south along the river bottom)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Franco Twinkie:

I think I'm sitting on a gold mine.
  6:17pm hoeg:

i just finished listening to your Ethan Guttman interview, it was AMAZING, thankyou
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Mark Hurst:

@Folsom agreed. Space Invaders and Combat were pretty good, too. Also the football game had surprisingly rich gameplay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Mark Hurst:

@hoeg thanks! Glad you liked it.
  6:18pm hoeg:

also HI all you lovely chatters and staffers
  6:22pm Ed:

OMG - Jennifer Egan?!!
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Handy Haversack:

Evening, Hoeg! Very much agree with you on that Guttman interview. Crucial radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Mark Hurst:

@Ed yes indeed
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Handy Haversack:

A Jennifer Egan interview maybe even a bigger triumph than finding a copy of the Kool-Aid Man Atari 2600 game!

Defender was my jam.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:26pm tim from washington:

I've got to split early so I'll come back to part 2 in in the archives. Thank you, Mark! Thanks Jennifer. This is a fascinating listen. I'm looking forward to reading Candy House.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Mark Hurst:

@TimFW thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm ultradamno:

Bloomberg article about Axie Infinity, the subject of the Vice piece I mentioned earlier, which plays into some of these themes, in a cryptocurrency based pyramid scheme kind of way www.bloomberg.com...

Mark, you ever get anywhere about interviewing Michael Chertoff?
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm PaulRobeson1922:

  6:40pm Marie:

I love first person narrative novels for just that reason--love to be in another's head, so to speak
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Mark Hurst:

@Marie do you have a favorite 1st-person narrative novel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Mark Hurst:

Daniel Boorstin's book is called "The Image" and I have posted a link to it in the links section at left (or above, if you're reading this in the future)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Mark Hurst:

And a link to a recent NYT story about the "BeReal" app is also posted at left.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:43pm PaulRobeson1922:

Jefferson wrote man is a “imitative creature” in the context of children and the slavery question
  6:43pm Marie:

Hi! Hm, well, I have quite a few that I love. One of them is called Kristin Lavransdattir--the story of one woman's life set in mideval Norway--it's actually never been out if print since it was first published in the 1930s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Mark Hurst:

@Marie thanks!
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm PaulRobeson1922:

Daniel Boorstin is a reliable source!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Pictures can enhance a literary experience - read the piece by Joan Acocella on Pinocchio in the current New Yorker.
  6:44pm Marie:

Then there is Humboldt's Gift and Herzog, both by Saul Bellow. Happy to share! Thanks for this and all your work, Mark!
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Miss G:

Thank you for this interview Mark Hurst. I will listen to it again. Thank you Jennifer Egan -- I loved A Visit from the Goon Squad, and gave copies to friends. So looking forward to The Candy House!
Avatar 6:46pm be11ows:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm an avid reader, but I rely on my eyeballs for more than reading.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Handy Haversack:

Very interesting talk, Mark! I don't know that I have any thoughts that would fit into the chatboard, but many full mind moments over here listening to Jennifer's thoughts on her process and the struggles she's trying to evoke.

Many thanks, Jennifer, for joining Mark and sharing with us.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm PaulRobeson1922:

Still one place to go… still one place to go
  6:49pm Marie:

I would also suggest Islandia by August Tappan Wright--described as utopian fiction where the creates a whole new world/continent on earth and an American man travels there. It's amazing.

  6:57pm Marie:

Thank you, Mark
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Franco Twinkie:

David Foster Wallace was a good fiction writer, but I think his real talent was describing the real word. Read The Girl With Curious Hair, then read Consider The Lobster, then ask yourself which was more illuminating.
