The beginning of this episode had a little sound issues, but it seems to only be at the beginning like that. Some of these later episodes of Box 13 have some sound issues.

Ellen: it was okay. Did some chores, cut my hair, played with the cats. That sort of stuff. Pretty boring weekend. But the chores were needed.

I'm trying to assemble a care package for Chris, with some money.

The first rule of Noir: there is no such thing as a suicide.

In real life, suicide is no joke. And as an aside: if anyone feels they need help, it is very good to reach out. There's no shame in that. EVER.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Austin Rich:

I did not see any Ellery Queen on TV. There were some radio shows, and I've heard a few of those. But the tropes for the character escape me.
  6:17pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Gee, being anxious to burn something isn't suspicious, or anything.
  6:17pm

They did it in a noir style, and suicide was fair game.
  6:18pm

I never watched Ellery Queen nor listened to it. However, my dad had a collection of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazines in our basement, and I read a few when I was like 10

A lot of noir stories require a few very cold characters to make the stories move forward.

Ellen Lovebug:

It makes it all the more poignant when someone is pure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
MHLee:

I love the old production music on radio... and really even in tv up till the early 70s. Like the Star Trek production music is wild but also very dated. It would sound weird to play in a tv show today.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Austin Rich:

MHLee: I'm with you. Usually, around 1980, I find TV and a lot of pop culture pretty dull. But old radio and old TV really shines for me. Maybe I just like the slower pace? Who can say. But Ellen and I are BIG fans of the sound / music on Box 13.
  6:28pm

There must have been some soundtrack that changed everything in tv but no idea when. I mean Pysco definitely has the older style of music...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Austin Rich:

For some reason, "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen" started running little "history" lessons like this, in their episodes, heavily eating into the length of each episode. I suspect there was some sort of requirement being imposed on the station to include "educational content." Regardless, I've kept it intact here in this (and other) shows.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Austin Rich:

(This is just the same song from before, but at a different point in the song.)

This song is soothing.

Austin Rich:

I'll have to remember it for the Holiday Season.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Austin Rich:

Pretty good sound this week. I did a little EQ, but not much.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Austin Rich:

This is the FINAL installment in the "Kang" storyline, a 21 part story that was set up in episode one, and has been referred to in most of the episodes since then. This wasn't exactly common in 1947; most 30 minute shows were self-contained, so that listeners could jump in at any point, and not be too confused. Most shows had the premise summarized in a sentence or two at the beginning of each show. But having something semi-continuous like this was rare...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
MHLee:

Originally I was going to model my show more on the Rudy Vallee broadcasts and see if I could get a vintage sound modulation on my voice... but I abandoned that... too much audio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
MHLee:

processing
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

And, as you'll find, not precisely successful, either. After this, the show continues... but all future stories are self-contained. Clearly there was a note, explaining that the on-going storyline was just not working, and to move on to something else. And, even then... the show doesn't last for very many more episodes.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Austin Rich:

After this, I think we only have 10 or 15 more episodes left.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Austin Rich:

(Maybe less? I'll have to check.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Austin Rich:

You'll find that more and more episodes are "short" for a variety of reasons.
Avatar 6:40pm
Mr Fab:

"educational content," excellent! There was a ridiculous thing WFMU had to go thru couple years ago where we had to prove we had educational content for some dumb bureaucratic reason. Ken put a call out to the listeners to send in examples of things that they had learned form WFMU. The response was, as they say, overwhelming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
MHLee:

I was there for that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Austin Rich:

Oh yeah. In the old days, I'm sure "educational content" had to be more textbook. But these days, I could think of so many things I've learned from radio, just as a listener.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Austin Rich:

This episode aired one week before Thanksgiving, 1947. While that has no impact on the show or the story, I do imagine that listeners at the time were thinking of the holidays as they listened to the radio back then.
Avatar 6:43pm
Mr Fab:

ha, he's "negging" her!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
MHLee:

Weird connection but this reminds of the Tales of the Black Freighter from the watchmen comic... the idea being that since superheros were real this type of drama became the dominant comic
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, I think about that occasionally. The Scarlet Queen would have been popular in the Watchmen world, for sure. And probably would have lasted longer.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
Austin Rich:

Whoops! I probably should have re-edited that commercial one more time...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Austin Rich:

I was waiting for a mistake like that to happen. Oh well. Dimestore Radio Theater had maintained a pretty good streak until now...

It's been one of those Mondays.
  6:48pm
Listener Robert:

Interesting that nighttime radio shows were becoming less serial, more disconnected series, while movie serials were still a thing. But the business incentives for the movies were different.
  6:49pm
John R:

Austin: I thought you were going throw in the the sleep aid also relives a dry cough.😊
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Austin Rich:

@John R: And I have done jokes like that, so I thought I was gonna do that too... except... Whoops!
  6:50pm
Listener Robert:

Also interesting that in TV, while daytime serials have become rarer in the USA, in recent decades nighttime series have become more serial.
  6:51pm
John R:

Austin: πŸ‘πŸ˜Š
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm

Kids cartoon shows have become more serial or at least adhering to canons instead of episodic ones
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Austin Rich:

1947 was also only about 20 years into continuous radio broadcasts being a regular thing in the United States, and dramas really only started going in the early 30s. So in 1947, radio dramas weren't all that old, and a lot of programmers were still trying to figure out how to make them work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Scott67:

Intense!
Avatar 6:54pm
Charles:

Were the ads all about Wheaties during this time of the Scarlet Queen still?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
Austin Rich:

Wheaties was the Dimension X sponsor. I'm not exactly sure who sponsored Scarlet Queen; none of the ads are mixed in with the surviving episodes.
  6:55pm
Listener Robert:

I love the way the fights are narrated on this show. Know of any examples other than Scarlet Queen where fights are narrated yet first person, retrospective yet seemingly in the present? He's talking in past tense, but putting himself "back there" too, like telling us while huffing and puffing with it.
Avatar 6:56pm
Charles:

Oops! I guess a part of me just wanted to talk about Wheaties.
  6:56pm
Listener Robert:

Austin, programmers are STILL trying to figure how to make them work!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Austin Rich:

Good observation, Listener Robert. A lot of radio fight scenes are just... noises, with no narration.
Avatar 6:57pm
Charles:

I agree Robert, it's great.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm
Austin Rich:

And that's the end of the Kang storyline...
  7:00pm
Listener Robert:

Not even a token statement like, "There was a telegram waiting for us that Kang had gotten the goods"?
  7:04pm
Listener Robert:

No, that's actually good, because then the "show" continues in the minds of the listeners, who are always in suspense as to whether Kang actually received them. Maybe a confederate of Constantino had sent false word about it! Who knows? Half the story is always in the possibilities.
Avatar 7:05pm
Charles:

Sounds good Austin!
  7:06pm
Listener Robert:

So, like Route 66?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
MHLee:

Terrifying
  7:37pm

So far, it sounds like either Howard Fast or this story ripped the other off. See Howard Fast's short story, "The Martian Shop".

Austin Rich:

Oooof. I forgot about the "little people" part of this bit. Yeah, we don't use that word anymore, dude...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm

Looks like "The Martian Shop" was first published in 1959. This episode aired in 1950. So Fast probably heard this episode at one point.
Avatar 7:42pm
Charles:

Were there repeats of these shows on the radio?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm

Indeed. Officially (the show would re-run stories), and then local stations would keep and re-air the transcription discs as often as they would like to, until station format changed, or something.

Now it's taking a different direction from that of "The Martian Shop". What they had in common was that they were about teaser campaigns.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Austin Rich:

Dimension X does some great horror, when they put their minds to it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Austin Rich:

This has a lot of hallmark Dimension X characteristics, including the fact that it seemed pretty clear what was going to happen at the beginning, and now... well... it got there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Austin Rich:

Dimension X is often critical of Nazis and the events of WWII, so it's not surprising to hear that reference in this episode.
