@clarke: someone in the home crowd last night asked The Redhead that question (while I was retuning a guitar). Her reply: When she sprained her ankle on an uneven stage in ohio! That would not have been my choice of story, but...

I heard an early prototype of BOC known as The Stalk-Forrest Group as the opening act for Ten Years After and MC5 at Stony Brook University, Long Island in (I think) 1970. I don't remember their set too clearly (I went to hear MC5) but I remember thinking they were at least pretty good, professional.
  3:22pm Van Winkle;-):

Greetings all from above the 49th...now...be very careful with your spelling or you might stumble on an altogether different and heavier sounding Scorpions band... Oh wait...they're spelled the same...ha, ha

Hey all. I’m in Bellwoods Park in Toronto. Show sounding great as the frisbees fly by.
  3:39pm noisejerk:

@Tony IDNC: omg, The Bridge to Nowhere... I played many gigs too close to the salad bar at the Union restaurant. Also, you'd have to check Wikipedia or HotrailsUK or whatever but pretty sure the original SWU preceded SFG. SWU had (Peter, Paul and Mary associate) Les Braunstein singing. After he was replaced by E Bloom they renamed to SFG for a bit to finish a second demo/debut attempt for Elektra.

  4:04pm jimmytallow:

Amazing song!
Avatar 4:04pm John L:

noisejerk: I noticed that, too, but I don't think it had the same impact on sales that it did for Kate Bush. sadly.
  4:05pm noisejerk:

Redeemed on the 1st album feels like last breath of their Dead/Quicksilver/Moby Grape-ness.... very Long Island.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm dday:

My copy of Transmaniacon skips just before the second ending lead in lick. I finally hear it the way it should go
  4:07pm noisejerk:

@dday, holy crap - my Trans MC does too! We got the same crap pressing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm dday:

I beat the hell out of my LP. Screams skips opening side two as well :)
  4:08pm noisejerk:

@John L - no surprise. I suppose I've heard more Cramps with bass in popular culture, alas.
  4:08pm Victrola Tom:

My favorite BOC tune right here!
  4:09pm Mike W.:

Awesome lead-in set
  4:09pm Victrola Tom:

Transmaniocon MC ‘ain’t bad either!
  4:10pm noisejerk:

I saw "Blue Oyster Cult" like 15-20 years ago at BB Kings. Sorta weird how 1st lp gets so much play - LDOM, Redcap, Stairway, maybe Trans MC. Even Cities despite no Albert
Avatar 4:10pm David Shortell:

Does this song have a thematic connection to the work of George Pelecanos?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm dday:

Maybe ask Joe B. if there's a link (subconsciously) between the verses in "Screams" & the bridge(s) in Zappa's "Concentration Moon" (We're Only In It For the Money)
  4:11pm Victrola Tom:

Just hit the exacta on race 8 at Belmont, and we’re all winning with this set right here!
  4:11pm noisejerk:

  4:18pm noisejerk:

Was never down with how they re-jiggered the chorus on OD'd for gigs. But, this un's wild and wooly and Buck is so Buck all over the Buckin place (Lanier giving him some what for, too)
Avatar 4:18pm John L:

I watched the new Ti West film, "X," and they used a BOC song. Unfortunately it was "Don't Fear The Reaper," which is the go-to song for filmmakers with not enough imagination. Great song, but overused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm dday:

One of the loudest shows I've ever attended was BOC opening for SLADE. Capitol Theater Passaic, NJ. 9/21/1973. 2nd Row Center

  4:24pm Jeff formerly from Rahway:

Groovy show today TOPT!!
Avatar 4:26pm David Shortell:

I always pronounced "Öyster" like I do "oyster". I don't know what the umlaut's for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Also very '19th Nervous Breakdown'. A good allusion...
  4:27pm noisejerk:

I used to have the 5 Guitars poster, but not as cool as that show. (Hot Rails reminds me of how so much guitar spew all over Tyranny isn't fixed, edited, punched. I've loved all of what would be considered mistakes left in since I was a tot. Money/time issues? Aesthetics, prolly not?)
Avatar 4:27pm Hackensack Slim:

Hey Todd, Another cool show. Lookin' forward to the chat with Joe. I was at the BOC show at the Capitol in Passaic, with Kiss as the opening act.
Avatar 4:29pm John L:

When I was growing up on Long island my friends and I looked up Buck Dharma in the phone book, under his real name. Unless there was more than one Donald Roeser living on L.I. I'm pretty sure it was him. Our intention was to drive by his house, just as a kind of pilgrimage, but we either chickened out or got too high and ended up at Jack-In-The Box.
Avatar 4:29pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Hackensack Slim: Kiss AND Slade or are you referring to a different show?
  4:30pm noisejerk:

More awesome Joe-ness. As soon as Secret Treaties extras came out with Boorman we covered it. Who could resist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm dday:

So wait..the umlautted O = the e sound like in "her" or the i sound in bird..so All this time I've been saying it wrong?
  4:31pm noisejerk:

John - growing up on LI I can attest that the getting too high and ending up at Jack in the Box is not the exceptional part of that story
Avatar 4:32pm Hackensack Slim:

Different Show, Todd. April '74. I wish Slade was on the bill.
  4:35pm noisejerk:

John - my best LI/BOC story: Around 19/20 years old, I was working for Manpower restocking Dr. Scholls displays in drugstores all over Nassau County. I'd be visited at my parents' house by a guy handing over boxes of product for the stores. I don't know how I knew - I guess I knew his real name, and MAYBE saw a picture somehow - one day I asked him, "Are you Andy Panda?" He was shocked, chagrined, not pleased. "Grumble grumble, etc"
Avatar 4:36pm John L:

I did get to see BOC at a benefit for Vietnamese refugees. Also on the bill was Utopia, Patti Smith , David Johansen and Rick Derringer. BOC were the best of the night, and I remember Patti being a little out of it.
Avatar 4:37pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

"When Led Zeppelin was really hot". That cracked me up.

  4:51pm noisejerk:

Lorraine: far left. I met him once and asked him about the essential "weirdness." He saw it then as he portrays now - sure, they could sit with MC5, Beefheart, etc. So, what explains Mirrors and on, or even Spectres? Not like they had Cheap Trick pop chops, groove, singing, to justify chasing hits.

  5:00pm Van Winkle;-):

Attended an altogether different "blue cult" concert this past Mon...Jack White in full blue smurf mode...really only attended because i wanted to experience a coliseum show again as a flashback to my mid 70s concert experiences...I did the 2 lighter double double at the end of the multi-screen "performance"... ;-)
Never caught THE öyster...but Alice, Kiss, Lizzy and even Elton were great...in their time..."when they were hot".
Today's concert sound systems are many times better though...

More cowbell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm luka:

the bass on the outro of this. my goodness, prepare yourself.
  5:13pm Victrola Tom:

Some things don’t require mentioning with this crowd, but we all know there will be no cowbell comments during this set, right?
  5:13pm Chattanooga Willy:

I saw BOC in the mid 70s at the colosseum in Montgomery AL. They were touring with Mott the Hoople. My friends and I moved from our nosebleed seats to the stagefront pit for their advertised "$400,000 laser light show". Buck Dharma shot lights from his ring that exploded in colors as they hit the sweet smoke above our heads. What a show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Mr. Pumpy:

More goat horn!!!
Avatar 5:13pm Fredericks:

I thought I'd outgrew the Cult. This set makes me think that that isn't quite true.
  5:13pm noisejerk:

JohnL: I'm from Nassau County. More about the bagels and industrial park chemical spills.
  5:14pm noisejerk:

Victrola: I was thinking/hoping the same thing, but, too late. Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm DjLorraine:

(Hair standing up!)
  5:15pm noisejerk:

luka: yes, that lick!
  5:15pm Robm:

I hate hearing cowbells:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Question :
...Does he ever think something actually needs more cowbell - but second-guesses himself...
  5:16pm Dan from Delco:

I’m seeing the gnarly eyeball
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Robm beats me by a minuet ...so it is with low-hanging fruits...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm van chinski:

Cliche, overplayed, overused or not this song is just frickin' great.
  5:17pm noisejerk:

Eff that crappy SNL stuff. Time Has Come Today and Mississippi Queen have way more cowbell.
Avatar 5:17pm HyperDose:

As much as I love that tune, gotta say Burnin' for You floors me a bit more
@Dan Tall boys for life!
  5:17pm Victrola Tom:

@Mr Pumpy LMAO & more goat horn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*MINNIT ...so it is with AutoIncorrect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm van chinski:

Burnin' For You is also killer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Pleasure to hear Reaper.
  5:18pm noisejerk:

Burnin is a Meltzer lyric!
  5:18pm bittycar:

Nice interview and show, Todd! As a little extra surprise my partner had Eric Bloom do a Cameo birthday shoutout video to my twin brother and I back in Feb. He sang Godzilla for us, right before he was about to board ship for the Rock Legends Cruise. Silly but I got a kick out of it. Thanks for the great show as always!

Avatar 5:19pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@bittycar: That's a great story!
Avatar 5:19pm John L:

nnoisejerk:My grandparents lived in Long Beach, so we went to Lido Beach a lot. And Nassau Coliseum for my first arena shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm van chinski:

There goes Tokyo
  5:20pm Robm:

@Todd are you going to play joan crawford by BOC?
  5:20pm Victrola Tom:

@Hyperdose I feel like I’ve lived to see Burnin get the cred it was due when the Hold Steady & Drive By Truckers used it as their encore during their ‘08 co-headlining tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Jessie:

I have always thought of Blue Oyster Cult as America's Hawkwind.
Avatar 5:21pm HyperDose:

Oh god...my loins 😍
  5:21pm Dan from Delco:

Oh yeah. Right in the vein.
  5:21pm Victrola Tom:

@noisejerk Mississippi Queen may in fact be the King of Cowbell!
  5:22pm Dan from Delco:

@van Godzilla is such a badass tune
  5:22pm noisejerk:

Victrola: That San Diego Replacements type band The Mieces had Burnin for You video on late night MTV I think back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm DjLorraine:

  5:23pm Dan from Delco:

@hyperdose hold my hand let’s go
  5:23pm noisejerk:

Bittycar: Isn't Godzilla a Buck vocal (like all their sorta hits)? Anyway, happy birthday (you deserve your own).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My college buds had The Revölution by Night album and I remember the "Shooting Shark" song.
  5:24pm Victrola Tom:

Reaper and Burnin are both near-perfect rock & roll tunes. Good times!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm DjLorraine:

I love the base line!!
Avatar 5:24pm HyperDose:

Love the bass and lead gtr in direct competition. I'd say it's a tie
  5:25pm Robm:

@DjLorraine also love this deep dive into BOC
  5:25pm Steve Harsh:

Great interview Todd. Long Island represent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm ACmonicAC:

Burnin should have some cowbell.
  5:25pm noisejerk:

JohnL: Unfortunately, I'm young enough to say my first BOC show was at Nassau on Spectres tour with Rush opening. BUT, I saw a weird crappyish post Will Shatter Flipper show at Malibu on Lido Beach. Violent Femmes opened!?
Avatar 5:26pm HyperDose:

@ACmonicAC ...how dare you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm ACmonicAC:

  5:26pm Victrola Tom:

@noisejerk I believe Buck wrote Godzilla but dueted the vocals with Bloom.
  5:26pm Dan from Delco:

This movie had a BOC subplot https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0111293/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
  5:27pm noisejerk:

Victrola: my brain memory sounds like that - both singing. I'd venture you're correct. Maybe we'll find out soon.
  5:27pm bittycar:

@noisejerk. He shares lead vocals with Dharma. Bloom had video clips of Godzilla on his laptop that he’d occasionally flash to while he sang. He had some funny things to say. Great guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm dday:

Hee hee . Some Cowbell fun for you all : cowbellsongs.com...
  5:28pm Victrola Tom:

@ACmonic nah, I’d go with Mr Pumpy’s goat horn for Burnin! 😂
  5:29pm Robm:

@dday you are evil:)
Avatar 5:29pm HyperDose:

The Stöned Age and Rolling Kansas are definitely two of the lesser-known stoner flicks. Smiley Face is also a gem with an absolutely star-studded cast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm dday:

Thanks Rob :)
  5:30pm noisejerk:

@bittycar - fun! I'm glad he was a nice guy! When I meet him he wasn't in the mood (probably something I said - it usually is).
  5:30pm Victrola Tom:

Not to sound redundant, but I also love this Bouchard track!! Killer!
  5:30pm Robm:

@dday don’t ever change
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm DjLorraine:

I remember enjoying Black Blade from Cultosuarus Erectus
  5:33pm bittycar:

@noisejerk. Haha! We all have our off days I guess. Thanks for the birthday wish!
Avatar 5:34pm John L:

Dan from Delco: There was a 2011 film called Roadie that also had a BOC subplot. It's about a stagehand who gets fired after 20 years on the road with BOC. More of a character study than a comedy. Bunch of BOC on the soundtrack, as well as some Good Rats.
  5:36pm noisejerk:

@bittycar. yeah, not kidding, I'm sure it was me (or at least the situation).
  5:37pm noisejerk:

@dday, that site is annoying and correct. I change my vote to Nazareth.
  5:38pm Dan from Delco:

@John L - Will check it out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm DjLorraine:

..i had a signed Ian Hunter poster but i had to move too many times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If someone can locate a recording of the isolated cowbell, please send it to Station Manager Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm dday:

@noisejerk: there's a website for everything it seems :)
Avatar 5:45pm HyperDose:

Because Freebird needs more cowbell, Ken?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm dday:

The Freebird solo should be ALL cowbell
Avatar 5:51pm Frank Zaatar:

Tish and Snooky! Now you're taking cult heroes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm dday:

DjLorraine: I have a Mott poster from '73 a show in Cleveland. Aerosmith was the opener. Mint. Not signed. I saw that combo at Seton Hall in Oct. 73. $3.50. Nobody knew who Aerosmith was. I've got some great photos of Mott from that show. B&W & color.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I created a whole spitlistz devoted to cow bell tunes (with a bit of creator licence...as rim shots can sometimes sound similar pretty similar...it's 4 hours long and quite moo~tivational when you need to get on with chores.
