John Dunbar:

Ed is in the UK, not for the Queen’s Jubilee, he’s there for an even more momentous event, Melani’s birthday.
He has asked me to moderate the chatbox today ( I just noticed that chatbox is a perfect rhyme for catbox….hmmm? )
We’re in for a treat. The fabulous Colin Moulding is Ed’s guest. Much like the Beatles where some prefer Paul’s songs to John’s, or John’s to Paul’s ( I know an impossible contrarian who claims Ringo wrote the best Beatles songs )
As time has trotted along, I think I prefer Colin’s songs to Andy’s. Let’s have some fun today. I hope that Double R loudmouth got invited to brunch somewhere without wifi this afternoon.
  2:05pm
John Dunbar:

Colin Moulding being a Kinks fan is not a surprise

  2:13pm
the bunk:

"...and then this punk thing happened..."

do you just love this sentence???!!!

cuz i do!
  2:14pm
Lilith212:

I'm team Colin!
  2:14pm
?:

"and then this punk thing happened" needs to be the title of a book.
  2:15pm
the bunk:

altho, "...so we had this manager in Swindon..." runs a close 2nd!
  2:15pm
John Dunbar:

Good choice Lilith.
  2:15pm
Lilith212:

Yes!
  2:15pm
the bunk:

yes it does! (book title)
  2:16pm
John Dunbar:

"So We Had This Manager In Swindon" should be the title of Colin's memoir.
  2:16pm
t.b.:

yup.
  2:16pm
Lilith212:

Perfect!
  2:17pm
John Dunbar:

Coiln is a phenomenal bass player,,, and an underappreciated vocalist.
  2:17pm
the bunk:

this show is so much fun!
thanks everybody!
  2:18pm
John Dunbar:

You are making it fun 'the bunk" you seem to get the humor the right way.
  2:18pm
Lilith212:

Welome the bunk!! Its always a Great time!!
  2:19pm
the bunk:

thanks j.d.!
  2:19pm
John Dunbar:

Early XTC had a little of that jumpy Talking Heads vibe to them. Thank goodness they grew out of that.
  2:19pm
Lilith212:

I'm hoping to hear Making plans for Nigel!!
  2:20pm
John Dunbar:

I have a feeling you will Liltih. I met a guy in a bar once who named his son Nigel after that song.
  2:20pm
the bunk:

  2:21pm
Lilith212:

  2:23pm
the bunk:

pop songs. they showed themselves to us as great pop song makers. they're songs were fun to listen to on the radio. i never actually owned an xtc record but loved it when the radio would play one of their songs...
  2:23pm
John Dunbar:

Looks like the playlist won't be updating since Melani is not here.
  2:24pm
Lilith212:

TRUE!
  2:24pm
t.b.:

*their*
  2:24pm
John Dunbar:

You're right the bunk, XTC turned out to be a great singles band. With their current legendary status, that gets forgotten.
  2:25pm
John Dunbar:

Don't worry t.b. we know how auto-correct is the enemy of proper punctuation
  2:25pm
John Dunbar:

and spelling
  2:25pm
the b.:

i would jump up and down when 'making plans 4 nigel' world come on ..
  2:26pm
Lilith212:

Me too! The Bunk!
  2:27pm
John Dunbar:

Nigel still grabs me. A very unique beat. And one of those songs with a mysterious sadness to it.
  2:27pm
Lilith212:

Definitely! JD!
  2:29pm
Lilith212:

Oh no! Not Jonathn King again!
  2:30pm
the bunk:

"mysterious sadness" there's a world in those 2 words, isn't there?
  2:30pm
John Dunbar:

Life Begins At The Hop, Making Plans For Nigel and Ten Feet Tall were all written by Colin Moulding. He could've been the main XTC guy, somehow Andy took over that role.
  2:31pm
John Dunbar:

Ed should edit out all references to Jonathan King from past episodes.
  2:32pm
John Dunbar:

This should be a great set.
  2:33pm
Lilith212:

OH YES!!!!
  2:33pm
John Dunbar:

The Bunk should be jumping up and down around now
  2:34pm
Lilith212:

AGREED! JD!
  2:36pm
the bunk:

Lilith212:

HEllo Officer Pupp!! Cheers to Her Majesty!
  2:37pm
John Dunbar:

@ the bunk- I think you nailed Andy Partridge's MO
  2:38pm
John Dunbar:

This is an odd version of Ten Feet Tall
  2:38pm
the bunk:

... not to diss Andy or anything...
  2:38pm
Lilith212:

Yes it is!
  2:39pm
the bunk:

is 'dis' the correct spelling? or is it 'diss'?
  2:40pm
Lilith212:

good question! The Bunk
  2:40pm
John Dunbar:

I don't think it's a Diss of Andy, it's just the truth. ( I was wondering if my double S was correct )
  2:40pm
the bunk:

oooooooooooooooo!!!!!! i love this song! i kinda forgot about it!!!
  2:41pm
Lilith212:

  2:41pm
John Dunbar:

Im surprised Ihop hasn't taken this song for a commercial campaign yet. Can't you see it? Boys and Girls smiling over pancakes... "Life begins at the Hop boys and girls..
  2:42pm
Lilith212:

HAHAHA!!!!That would be perfect! Its way to cool for Ihop franchise
  2:43pm
John Dunbar:

I think we're swaying the bunk to Team Colin....
  2:43pm

  2:43pm
John Dunbar:

Another Colin killer!!!!
  2:44pm
Lilith212:

OMG!!! LOVE THIS ONE!! TEAM COLIN!!!!
  2:44pm
John Dunbar:

3 of these 4 songs mention the title in the opening line. That's what Colin was describing earlier about his writing style.
  2:45pm
Lilith212:

Really Cool!
  2:45pm
?:

Hi all. Overslept. I blame the rain.
  2:45pm
John Dunbar:

One of rock's great whistling hooks
  2:46pm
Lilith212:

Good afternoon! ?!
  2:46pm
John Dunbar:

Welcome ?.... it's not raining in New York, so we were punctual.
  2:48pm
John Dunbar:

Isn't "quirky" known as a pejorative nowadays?
  2:49pm
the bunk:

  2:53pm
John Dunbar:

No Skylarking yet
  2:53pm
the bunk:

  2:54pm
John Dunbar:

" I felt Lorraine down in Africa"

Lilith212:

  2:55pm
John Dunbar:

"I want to know... have you ever seen Lorraine?"
  2:56pm
Lilith212:

HAHAHA!!
  2:56pm
John Dunbar:

"Here comes Lorraine again. falling on my head like a memory"
  2:57pm
Lilith212:

Purple Lorraine - could be a Dukes Of Stratosphear Song
Avatar 🎸 2:57pm
Don Ciccone:

Happy Birthday Melani wherever you are.
  2:58pm
John Dunbar:

Speaking of... we should hear some Dukes I think. Vanishing Girl is a Colin song... let's hope Ed plays that one.

Avatar 🎸 3:00pm
Don Ciccone:

Was there a Ringo in XTC who wrote the best songs?
  3:00pm
John Dunbar:

I'm happy to report Melani was able to wear a scarf on her birthday, so a happy one was guaranteed.
  3:00pm
Lilith212:

What song is this one??
  3:00pm
John Dunbar:

Barry Andrews ( early XTC ) could be their Ringo perhaps.
  3:01pm
Lilith212:

YAYYY Melani!!
  3:01pm
John Dunbar:

This is Wonderland of Mummer. Sweet song.
Avatar 🎸 3:01pm
Don Ciccone:

Did Barry write anything?
  3:01pm
Lilith212:

I dont know this one! I DIG IT!!
  3:02pm
John Dunbar:

If you listened earlier, DC Colin explained that Barry left because he was getting enough songs on the records
  3:02pm

  3:03pm
John Dunbar:

  3:09pm
Lilith212:

I wish They made more Dukes records!
Avatar 🎸 3:10pm
Don Ciccone:

A friend of mine put it perfectly, "XTC makes me nervous"
  3:10pm
John Dunbar:

I think your friend is talking about Andy's songs.not Colin's.
  3:11pm
Lilith212:

Really?? Funny I find them super calming
Avatar 🎸 3:11pm
Don Ciccone:

Who wrote Nigel?
  3:11pm
John Dunbar:

Andy is more herky jerky, Colin is less so. Colin wrote Nigel.
Avatar 🎸 3:12pm
Don Ciccone:

I thought Skylarking was unusually calming.
  3:12pm
Lilith212:

Beautiful Album!
  3:12pm
John Dunbar:

That album has the most Colin songs than any other XTC album
Avatar 🎸 3:13pm
Don Ciccone:

Did Colin write "Things we used to do on grass"?
  3:14pm
John Dunbar:

Skylarking is their best album. Rundgren producing it made a difference. And yes, Colin wrote Grass.
Avatar 🎸 3:15pm
Don Ciccone:

I remember that one and "Earn enough for Us." Was that also Colin?
  3:15pm
Lilith212:

I forgot Rundgren produced it!!
MAsterpiece!
  3:15pm
John Dunbar:

No.. Andy wrote Earn Enough For Us.
  3:16pm
John Dunbar:

Colin's right. You can hear the smiles on those Dukes tracks.
  3:18pm
Lilith212:

So true! And to know they had no pressure and just have a good time makes me love it even more
  3:19pm
John Dunbar:

I remember buying the first Dukes EP at Venus records on the second floor.

  3:22pm
John Dunbar:

They hated each other.
  3:22pm
John Dunbar:

They still fight in the press over that album
  3:22pm
Lilith212:

Oh wow really???
  3:23pm
John Dunbar:

Dear God was originally left off the album
  3:24pm
Lilith212:

WOT?!Cannot believe that!!
  3:24pm
John Dunbar:

It was a b-side,, Then some deejay loved that song and started playing it. The rest is history
  3:24pm
John Dunbar:

I think Grass is a better song than Dear GOd.
  3:24pm
Lilith212:

That is amazing! Such an epic song
  3:25pm
John Dunbar:

Todd loved Dear God. Having the kid sing the intro was Todd's idea
  3:25pm
Lilith212:

I perfer Grass as well but you have to give Dear God credit
  3:26pm
Lilith212:

ahhhhhhhhh- here we go- sooo lovely
  3:26pm
Lilith212:

Todd made the right move on that!
  3:26pm
