Just last night I was watching a thing about Geddy Lee and he talked about always liking a lot of different kinds of music, and that progressive rock allowed him a space to incorporate all those influences. Obviously some people would now want to debate that idea, but back in the early 70s, before it became so synonymous with bloat, that probably made a lot of sense.

(and yes indeed, “prog” did become “synonymous with bloat” but only among a few folks who never listened to, liked, or knew about prog, mostly a few self-described “music critics.” And it’s a mistake to think that prog was singled out, there were a few prog bands that were selling a lot of records and selling out big arenas every year in the seventies. Those bands were ALL accused of “bloat” because they weren’t playing to half a room at CBGB like “unbloated” bands… )

So Yes and Genesis were accused of being bloated dinosaurs, because (here’s the Prog Fact for this week) they were both among the top ten ticket selling acts in North America year after year in the 70’s. along with Rilling Stones, Kiss, etc. ALL of those bands (even the Stones) were criticized at the time for not being someone’s idea of “authentic rock”.

So for those of you who think of Phil Collins as just the Sussudio guy, an annoying little lightweight from the 80’s who cluttered the radio and MTV with vapid pop, remember: before ANY of that he had a nearly decade-long career as one of the hottest, most respected drummers, and songwriter and backup singer in a band that released a best-selling album and did a massively successful tour year after year.

AND Phil accomplished what sounded nearly impossible: When Peter Gabriel left Genesis in the mid seventies, Phil took over as frontman and Genesis made two more albums that were every bit as worthy as the Gabriel albums, each accompanied by another immensely successful world tour. In fact I saw how audiences of fans who LOVED Gabriel warned right up to Phil’s singing and showmanship. A very rare thing to happen with any hugely successful group.

Hey folks. Was washing dishes listening and falling into the pleasant trance of this Fatima tune. Trying to get the foul taste out of my head of taking the little ones to the tawdry, overpriced local carnival, and then though that I’d like to get back to the Abby Martin podcast about LSD (a subject covered nicely in the Jon Savage book “1966”), which I thought my good friend from CZ who just visited would enjoy, particularly after she relayed an enjoyable trip she recently had.
That tune seemed a perfect encapsulation of my thoughts then.
Cool stuff as always, Sheila.
