Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Pardon me, pardon, sorry, excuse me. pardon me. Ah. Decent seats. Here's the curtain.
Avatar 🎭 7:01pm Listener Gregory:

Good evening, theater-lovers! Am I here, or am I going out to get dinner? Time will tell.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Good afternoon from the West! this takes me back to my college days in San Francisco when there was not only Miss M but a station that played music from the 20s, 30s, and 40s that I had on all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi WR, Gregory and Lizzie!!!! Welcome to the show, please keep your phones off for the duration of the performance
Avatar 🎭 7:03pm Listener Gregory:

Bronwyn, beat us 8 to the bar, we're begging!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm WR:

But if I mute my phone I won't be able to listen to the stream....
Avatar 🎭 7:09pm Roberto:

Roadside assistance did not arrive within one hour as promised. More like five hours.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm WR:

Egads Roberto! and it was cold and rainy!
Avatar 🎭 7:12pm Roberto:

Indeed it was. By the time they arrived I was starting to hallucinate lolz
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm WR:

I guess you didn't want to walk back to that mysterious house you had passed.
Avatar 🎭 7:15pm Roberto:

I considered walking to the end of the off-ramp to see where it would take me.
Avatar 🎭 7:25pm Listener Gregory:

"Bronwyn Bishop presents World War II: All the Glamor, All the Beautiful Sounds"
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm WR:

Wonder if we will be hearing any Al Bowlly or Glenn Miller or other WWII casualties?
Avatar 🎭 7:34pm Listener Gregory:

That Noel Coward is something. Interestingly, in the end, the British were not so beastly to the Germans after the war, in contrast to the previous Great Unpleasantness. Perhaps the reason was the devastation of Germany per se, which largely escaped destruction (except for its soldiers) in WWI.
Avatar 🎭 7:41pm Listener Gregory:

I'm reading a British mystery written and taking place during WWII, and I was taken aback to hear two characters reporting that they were listening to Richard Strauss and Wagner on the wireless. I guess all things German were not suppressed even then.
  7:42pm KWilde:

Loving this show
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi I’m back from a little local neighborhood protest! Happy Memorial Day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: My #1 favorite song to sing and the only song I ever use when I (rarely) audition for stuff is by Richard Strauss, he wrote it when he was 21. I was pretty distressed to learn of his Nazi connections...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Bronwyn Bishop:

its called zueignung and its glorious...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Webhamster Henry:

Getting to Kurt Weill’s Johnny Johnson or Buddy on the Nightshift?
Avatar 🎭 7:49pm Listener Gregory:

Wasn't the opening theme of Beethoven's Fifth an allied theme for victory (or D-Day) or something?
Avatar 🎭 7:50pm TonyR:

Tuned in just in time to welcome my soldier home!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@KWilde: thanks so much!! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: no kurt weill tonight :( sorry kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi TonyR!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Webhamster Henry:

This show could go on fora log time
Avatar 8:01pm HyperDose:

Good evening, Bronwyn!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Listener Gregory, I recently read a mystery written around 1949, that took place during a production of a Wagner opera in England, fictionally the first after the war.
  8:02pm Dean:

Strauss' Electra...yikes.

You should perform "Zueignung" at the H&M, but deliver it legit.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Webhamster Henry:

There is a song in Hail Caesar the implies there is something like a dame.
  8:04pm Dean:

Just don't talk over the underture.
Avatar 🎭 8:04pm Listener Gregory:

Nothing from "On the Town"? Oh well, we'll catch up some other time.
Avatar 🎭 8:05pm TonyR:

I have exclamation points!!!!
Avatar 🎭 8:06pm TonyR:

Opening this Fall: "WAR!"
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:09pm diciassette:

Hello sailors!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Webhamster Henry:

Need to imagine a dancing mouse here.
Avatar 8:12pm HyperDose:

Excellent sound design
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Webhamster Henry:

Who sounds suspiciously like Sara Berner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Dean: I have wanted to do this for years but have no idea how it would be received by the audience and my fellow DJs lol
Avatar 🎭 8:21pm Listener Gregory:

Great show, BB. Unfortunately, my draft number's been called, and I must go. We'll meet again... don't know where, don't know when, but we'll meet again some sunny day. Thanks!
Avatar 🎭 8:21pm Listener Gregory:

P.S. will catch the last half hour on the archive.
Avatar 8:26pm HyperDose:

A man dancing with a mouse?! I need to see this
  8:34pm Dean:

You mean the Nazi connection? Or the acquired taste of German lieder? I can't imagine WFMU folks *not* being tantalized by a recital. Strauss, Schubert, Wolf, Beethoven...what's not to like?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:35pm diciassette:

This reminds me of the Bad News Bears slugging it out with the Yankees!
Avatar 8:37pm HyperDose:

That guy is real smooth
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Webhamster Henry:

Name droppin' Johnny Mercer.
  8:39pm Dean:

During COVID pandemic you have to accentuate the negative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Dean: Just meaning that people would probably think it was weird if I showed off lol
Avatar 8:44pm HyperDose:

Peeked in my Fred Astaire folder and The Sky's the Limit was not present. Thank you for giving me something to seek out and watch tonight!
  8:45pm Dean:

I get that, but I shouldn't get it. For instance, I love it when Lucia Popp shows off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Maybe I should just do it and switch things up a little at the ol' hoofy
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Webhamster Henry:

Betty Grable radio dance routine....
  8:50pm Dean:

That's an approach. I should add that I also especially love it when mere non-celebrity amateurs--in the etymological sense of the word--perform. The drive to sing, act, play musical instruments, and all that, is itself a wonder to behold.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Webhamster Henry:

"I'll look for you when the war is over ... an hour and a half from now!"
- Prof. Tom Lehrer "So Long Mom, I'm Off to Drop The Bomb"
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm WR:

Audio dropped twice for me.once during the back announce and again just before the chorus came in.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm diciassette:

Bomb a ditty bomb a ditty.. Happy trails, and thank you!
Avatar 8:57pm HyperDose:

Fantastic last set. Thanks Bronwyn!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

This is a great show, Bronwyn. Vera Lynn died in 2020 and it was HUGE in the UK. When I looked up the year I learned that the film version of The Wall opens with a bit of Vera singing "The Little Boy Santa Claus Forgot", a boy without a father, same as Roger Waters.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm WR:

Excellent closer. Bing's a fave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Bronwyn Bishop:

couple more songs, we are going into OT!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm WR:

Yay OT!
