Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Welcome to the Free World

Hi, Dave and Claire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Dave Sewelson:

Hey doc!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm fred:

I missed Cooper-Moore this week, because dance comes first. I regret my choice. The show was good, but terrifying. I was asked to come onstage, was the only one to refuse. It came out as hateful when I was petrified. Yeah I'm evil
  2:08pm DavidJ:

Hi Dave and Claire
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm doctorjazz:

This was recorded by the classic Trane quartet, but only released posthumously, guess they didn't think it was up to snuff at the time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Dave Sewelson:

If you is evil fred then the world is a beautiful place!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Dave Sewelson:

DavidJ...welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Dave Sewelson:

Is anyone having Audio problems with the broadcast?
  2:15pm DavidJ:

Is anyone else having audio dropouts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Dave Sewelson:

I wonder why they didn't release it sooner....
Avatar 🥁 2:15pm duke:

Hello Dave and Claire
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:16pm doctorjazz:

Quick short dropout here...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm fred:

@Dave: I publicly rejected people who are commonly rejected. That's evil. What made me do it isn't relevant, I should have known better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Dave Sewelson:

If you knew better you would do better...give yourself a little hug.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm doctorjazz:

This Transition, in vinyl, in good condition, looks like it sells for more than $100...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:22pm doctorjazz:

@Fred, people are often the worst judges of how they are coming off to other people, often we project our feelings onto them (that's something meditation works on). I'm guessing people there, including the performers, just took it as being anxious, stage fright, shyness, not a personal affront.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Dave Sewelson:

I judge people who judge people
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:31pm fred:

@Dave: hug is part of the issue
@doctorjazz: Part of the show's point was having non-typical people on stage and challenging others to accept them. So my block was harmful.
  2:44pm DavidJ:

This was one of my early faves too. My older brother, an aspiring drummer, had the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Dave Sewelson:

DavidJ...wow
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:54pm doctorjazz:

Love this Rollins!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:55pm fred:

It's not really doctorjazz' birthday, but at his age it's a rounding error, so I think it counts. Happy birthday doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Dave Sewelson:

Happy Birthday\ Doc
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:59pm doctorjazz:

Not till Wednesday, but we'll celebrate Birthday Week here...
  3:00pm Jim Ryan:

Sonny! my favorite master of the tenor after Pres. Thank You!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Dave Sewelson:

Welcome Mr Ryan
  3:06pm claire:

hi errybody! i wasn't on the page until now. greetings and salutations. anybody wanna buy a not-so-great condition "transition"? (kidding). so happy to be here today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Dave Sewelson:

Welcome to the page, Claire
  3:08pm Tim Kennedy:

Your beautiful Dave. Tunes coming through loud & clear here in Minnesota.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Dave Sewelson:

Yeah Tim!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:10pm doctorjazz:

I've always wondered about Rollins, and his sabbatical. He's supposed to have been unhappy with his playing and/or concept. I hear a difference in his tone afterwards, another, leaner, but hard for this non-musician to hear the musical changes. We're there some obvious to musicians?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm fred:

@doc: You meant Sonny... for a while I was thinking Henry, but at some point it didn't match
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm doctorjazz:

Plug for the Two Sisters albums, and People Like Us, great stuff! Got to see Joel Forrester again last summer, he had a daily solo gig for a week in a park in NYC (seen The Micros more times than I can count).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:22pm doctorjazz:

I didn't, ahem, 'Getz' this Getz album when I first got it, took quite a few listens...
  3:26pm Jim Ryan:

Wow! my favorite master of the tenor after Pres and Newk! And I haven't heard this one before . . . Wowee! Zowiee!
  3:29pm claire:

this record is awesome, jim. check it out! stan went and improvised over an orchestra
  3:31pm Jim Ryan:

I'll absolutely DO IT! Thanks for the music you are playing!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm doctorjazz:

If I remember correctly, the concept on the Getz was that the string Orchestra parts were written as a skeletal framework, no melodic content, for Getz to flesh out.
  3:33pm claire:

that's how i understood it, doc
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm doctorjazz:

Eddie Sauter did the arranging/writing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm doctorjazz:

This is great, Sisterhood rocks!
  3:38pm freebssn:

oh yeah!
  3:38pm Jim Ryan:

If you're going to play music at this level perhaps it will soon be time for Lester Leaps In . . . the Aladdin version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm chresti:

I took Miles Ahead out from the library my 1st year of college, couldn't make any sense of it. In my 4th year I took a jazz history class given by Chuck Israel's, everything clicked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm adamdoesit:

Hi Dave, Claire, and doctorjazz quasi-birthday celbrants (happy quasi-birthday doctorjazz!). I've been enjoying the show since tuning in about an hour ago.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Dave, Claire and Saturdaypeople!
  4:40pm claire:

hi gina!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm doctorjazz:

This Fringe looks to be out of print (of course I searched for it). My brother in law is over, never liked free jazz, he liked this track... (Go figure...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Dave Sewelson:

GINA!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm adamdoesit:

doc, I've got a pain in my jaw that just won't quit, and it seems like the world is going to s**t, but you know me, I can't complain. Seriously, tho, I didn't getz "Focus," either, but somehow copies kept finding me. A mess or a message?
  4:43pm claire:

the fringe does that to people. i've seen guys in business suits screaming when they play, and i'm sure they're not jazz guys.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Gina Bacon:

I always tell this story, but when I was in high school, a bunch of us went to see Sun Ra in the Village...when they started coming through the crowd, one of the girls with us beat it out of there, and waited on the sidewalk until it was over. Freaked completely out.
  4:48pm claire:

gina - LOL.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:48pm doctorjazz:

Hey Find!
Those Sun Ra shows were a trip! They played in jazz venues, punk rock venues, fit in everywhere (or didn't fit in equally successfully)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:48pm doctorjazz:

*Hey Gina (damn phone...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Dave Sewelson:

I always remember the 2 Bari players lying on their backs and playing,,...I can't do it
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Gina Bacon:

Hi, doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm adamdoesit:

Gina and doc, a neighbor recently saw me wearing a Sun Ra Arkestra t-shirt, and told me about how she once saw him play a very straight, very white event. "I had just one glass of white wine," she said, but when the band came through the crowd, she became suddenly and violently ill, and left feeling terribly embarrassed. To this day, she wonders what the hell she ate/drank… but the thought that crossed my mind was something like "strong medicine…casting out demons."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Gina Bacon:

Wow...well, it is powerful juju!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Gina Bacon:

I love RRK.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm doctorjazz:
