"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm YETI BOB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm tim from washington:

Handy - This is a bona fide jammer. If you have one string, you'd better jam on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Crosby in KC:

How have I never heard Eddie "one String" Jones? This is amazing!
  12:37pm RK:

This guy is OK but he can't hold a candle to Bill "Zero Strings" Morton

There was an old Chinese guy who used to play the one stringed Chinese instrument in Union Sq Station with no background sound track nor amp... was quite amazing ...

As they say on the Island, hells yeah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm YETI BOB:

RevRab: I saw a 6-piece berimbau ensemble a few weeks ago (Arcomusical), was pretty amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm YETI BOB:

they explained the history of the instrument and how it was related to the diddley-bow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh yeah :
en.wikipedia.org...
- you see this thing & think - what is that gonna do ...& then all this lyrical centuries old stuff comes out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm tim from washington:

@Yeti - I am unfamiliar with berimbau and arcomusical. What's the story?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm YETI BOB:

Berimbau is a one-string instrument that's used in Brazilian music. It has African roots, as does the diddley-bow. Enslaved people brought these to the Americas. Arcomusical is the name of the group I saw performing with these instruments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm tim from washington:

This could fit easily on the Mutiny EP. This is so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm YETI BOB:

Tim - each instrument only produces a few different notes, but by combining/interlocking parts they build up something more complex. It's a bit like gamelan in that regard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm YETI BOB:

Essentually, a long bent stick, a string, a gourd. And a lot of skill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm tim from washington:

That sounds like good listening, Yeti! Thanks. I've seen Cooper-Moore play the diddley bow and also Ban Kroha during a Demolition Doll Rods show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Michael 98145:

This -is- the educational channel after all www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Berimbau also related to a kind of acrobatic dance Folk Martial Arts down there - in that context of sly under the radar self-rpreservation slave culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm chris in the redwoods:

i hear "fire and ice" in this burning boats. who borrowed from whom?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Handy Haversack:

Anyone else listening from the home page on the internet? It's oddly 9 minutes behind the App (which appears to be "real time"). Clay ended at 8:09 (CT) and then Matty ended again about 10 after. So now I'm trying ot figure out if I'm listening to Eve Adams or if it's the Judy Henske.

I'm guessing the gofundme for Bryce reached it's goal since there's not a link on the home page anymore. I hope Bryce is healing well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Handy Haversack:

No updates on the GoFundMe yet, abbazabba. Last I heard from a DJ on a chatboard -- maybe from People Like Us? -- was that he was home and under his cats and eating liquefied Indian food through a straw.

The GFM has not reached its goal, and here's the URL for anyone who can help: www.gofundme.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm tim from washington:

I read a quote recently that Paul Leary said he no longer listens to music for pleasure. If he wants to hear music he'll just make it in his head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm tim from washington:

Indian buffet or ordering off the menu. What's your preference?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm YETI BOB:

Is this what the music in Paul Leary's head sounds like? (BTW, "Gold Cap" is a type of psilicybin-containing mushroom)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm chresti:

Severed Heads might go nicely with this set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm DjLorraine:

What are the chances the JA in the AM fanny pack making a comeback? I'm not a purse carrying gal.
Avatar 1:48pm abbazabba:

I prefer the buffet mostly. I turn into a glutton with Indian food
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm tim from washington:

@Yeti - I suspect that what we heard is pretty close to the sounds in Paul Leary's brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Jason from Houston:

Ugh... Covid ended up causing my go to vegetarian buffet to just do menu ordering. That place was the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm tim from washington:

I'm with you abbazabba. My all time favorite buffet is Red Apple in Chicago. It's Polish though.

The History of Elephant Curry Mariners is not extensive. Tho it is relatively inexpensive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm luka:

@tim NR obviously legends but that new stuff is indeed nothing to write home about
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, ParUbi.

Yes, more clarinets would help the world.

My corner is NYC is distressingly denuded of Indian food. There's one terrible takeout place. No South Indian food at all. Jason, send sambar and dosas!

this jazz is brilliant!

We have a Sri Lanken/Indian restaurant around here that's just mind-blowing. Dang it, now I'm hungry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm tim from washington:

@Luka - I'd still love to see them. Throb Throb is one of my all time favorites.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm tim from washington:

@Woods - Whoa! What's Sri Lankan food like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

sofa - I did no more than mention it !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm duluoz:

@Tim and @Andrew, sadly that Red Apple no longer exists. place was great though. you could wash your laundry right next door and while you waited, could slam some pierogies and golumpki. There's one that still exists, though a little out of the city in Niles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@tim from washington: I spices are slightly different. It's pretty subtle. All I know is that an Indian friend of mine came for a visit and she said it was the best Indian food she'd had since moving to the States.

An Indian place opened in my town several months ago. The Saag Paneer tastes like fresh grass clippings. No choice but to continue making my own in the slow cooker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm YETI BOB:

"Vajra" in Chicago has the best saag paneer I've ever had. I want some *now*

Ya' know, I don't think I've ever had a bad saag dish, which is pretty lucky considering how delicate spinach can be sometimes.
Avatar 2:42pm HyperDose:

If only fresh cut grass tasted as good as it smelled
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm karlward:

Sometimes I have wondered if the saag is just shredded green paper
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm karlward:

Like ChukAmok, I am also from the South, where they don't generally understand Indian food
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Handy Haversack:

I tried making a vegan version last year. It was super complicated. And I screwed one thing up. The end result ... well, K8 was very charitable about it. But basically, I didn't know anything about fake milks and ended up using something that was sweetish (for coffee? I also take my coffee black). It was disheartening enough that I haven't tried it again since. Instead, I just eat shredded green paper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm duluoz:

@yeti thanks for that heads up! that isn't too far down the street, might have to check it out later this evening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Handy: What did you use for the paneer? Tofu?

@Michael 98145 - thanks! That place looks great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Barney Grubbs:

phosgene, erstwhile chemical warfare agent and precursor to polycarbonate, is supposed to smell like freshly cut grass (but I've never worked with it and don't plan to, so can't confirm).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm ChukAmok:

@HH Obviously tofu can be used, but if you don't want to go the soy route then you can make a mock tofu "paneer" from red lentils.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Handy Haversack:

Woods: yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm karlward:

1 year window for that song, I love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm ChukAmok:

@karlward If it can't be breaded and fried, then it's not going to be much good to a lot of the folks south of the M-D.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm karlward:

How d'ya like your lemonade? Breaded and fried, ma'am, breaded and fried.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Michael 98145:

Exactamundo. Well, the fried version of liquids down here is just a matter of including gin, or some spirits of equal potentcy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Handy Haversack:

I can never remember why I'm supposed to avoid soy. Suffice to say: I do not avoid it very well.

Thanks, JA! This has been great. Hope for more occurrences in whatever tries to pass itself off as the future!

Later on, J'All!
