Also good afternoon from unseasonably hot Green Bay, where the temperature is 92 as we speak. Stick that in your frozen tundra.

The crazy violin!
Avatar 🥁 3:19pm Erica:

Orchestral meets Rock and/or Roll.
Avatar 🥁 3:19pm Erica:

Rock and/or Roll was a Reverend Lovejoy reference.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Funky16Corners:

I remember!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Michael 98145:

Jazz it, Iggy
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I love how the organist collapses at the end of the song.
  3:27pm sufferwords:

yipeee- for you and us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Candy-O'67:

@Jeff, it's only 88 here in Austin right now. High is supposed to be 94 today. Lower humidity today. So, it's not bad at all :)
Avatar 🥁 3:27pm David Shortell:

I think I first saw Donovan in the unnarrated 1977 documentary series “All You Need Is Love: The Story of Popular Music” when PBS rebroadcast it in 1980. He played the Brian Jones-inspired “Local Boy Chops Wood”.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm coelacanth∅:

Happy anniversary Larry!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Funky16Corners:

Hello sufferwords!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm coelacanth∅:

(husker du did my favorite version of sunshine superman)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Funky16Corners:

Hi David! I kind of feel thay I've been aware of Donovan since I was a kid. It's almost impossible to have been alive in 1967 and not heard this song,
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Funky16Corners:

Hi C! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm coelacanth∅:

it was played at least every few hours on wabc-am, for weeks if not months
Avatar 🥁 3:34pm Erica:

I could NOT sing that high.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Funky16Corners:

Donovan's version of this song has never been released. It was recorded by Karen Verros and Dana Gillespie, both versions rare and expensive.
Avatar 🥁 3:35pm Erica:

I discovered the Dana Gillespie version first, on BBC Radio 6 Music.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Funky16Corners:

I think it was just reissued for Record Store Day
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Funky16Corners:

BTW George Washington Brown is in fact Van Dyke Parks
Avatar 🥁 3:37pm Erica:

I didn't know that Larry.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Funky16Corners:

Which one, Erica?
Avatar 🥁 3:39pm Erica:

Which one what Larry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Michael 98145:

VDP !
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Funky16Corners:

You said you didn't know that. I was asking which thing didn't you know?
Avatar 🥁 3:40pm David Shortell:

Until now, I only knew "You Just Gotta Know My Mind" as a song recorded in the 2000's by the Royal Purple (a project by WFMU Rock'N'Soul deejays Mike Sin and Stu Rutherford).
Avatar 🥁 3:41pm Erica:

Sorry I thought you were talking to me about Record Store Day.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Funky16Corners:

@David - Now I have to go dig out my Royal Purple CDs. Mike gave me a bunch of them years ago
Avatar 🥁 3:42pm David Shortell:

I once saw Donovan in person, but not as a performer. Back in the 2000’s, he spoke to an audience at the Anthology Film Archives after a screening of Jacques Demy’s 1972 film “The Pied Piper” which he played the titular role in.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Funky16Corners:

I've always wanted to see that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Michael 98145:

just mad about superlungs
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Funky16Corners:

OK, I just looked up The Pied Piper, it features UK bombshell as "Frau Poppendick". Somebody had a sense of humor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm doctorjazz:

I may as well try to say hi (from my busy office), hi Larry and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Michael 98145:

this is such a flashback
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Funky16Corners:

@Michael - Superlungs is coming
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
Avatar 3:50pm Kitschy Mama:

Fun show Larry!
Avatar 🥁 3:51pm David Shortell:

Said UK bombshell is Diana Dors!
  3:51pm Andres:

Hi, Larry! Happy 5th Anniversary! Digging the Donovan!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Angela! Thanks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Andres! Thanks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Funky16Corners:

@David - Yes!
Avatar 🥁 3:53pm David Shortell:

That line about a power ring in "Museum" is Donovan's second reference to Green Lantern in his songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm coelacanth∅:

Reid's superlungs is better than Donovan's in my opinion ...maybe just because of that voice Terry's got
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Funky16Corners:

@C - That's the one that's coming!
Avatar 3:55pm Sem:

Miss you, Theodore!
Avatar 🥁 3:55pm Erica:

Ooh la la
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Michael 98145:

Hope Dark Night Julie is around here ...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Funky16Corners:

Julie did a Donovan set the other night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Michael 98145:

  3:58pm CupcakeJenny:

Had to strip in and say hi 👋
Avatar 🥁 3:58pm Erica:

Hi Jenny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm coelacanth∅:

what, you're not playing the Allman brothers' version of first there is a mountain?!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Funky16Corners:

Strip in?!?!? This is not a clothing optional show!
  3:59pm CupcakeJenny:

Yikes!! DROP IN
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Michael 98145:

Aloha, honored educator !
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Funky16Corners:

@C - That would be like half the show.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Funky16Corners:

Hi Jenny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm coelacanth∅:

1/4, about!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Michael 98145:

wow - never heard this
  4:00pm CupcakeJenny:

Funky16corners AFTER DARK LOL
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Funky16Corners:

@Michael - From a UK-only LP. She also does Hurdy Gurdy Man on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm coelacanth∅:

and i believe it IS a clothing-optional show
  4:01pm CupcakeJenny:

Hi Erica and Michael :)
Avatar 🥁 4:01pm Erica:

lol coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Michael 98145:

La-la !
  4:02pm CupcakeJenny:

Anything is clothing optional if you’re not easily embarrassed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm coelacanth∅:

- or if you can't be seen
Avatar 🥁 4:04pm David Shortell:

It's remarkable that Donovan referred to Jefferson Airplane in this song when they were largely unknown (before the group's first album!).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Funky16Corners:

He made the scene in California.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Funky16Corners:

Earlier this week the former editor of Sixteen magazine posted a clipping about Donovan coming to a Hollywood party, playing a set from the diving board of the pool, then jumping in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Michael 98145:

Whoa !
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Funky16Corners:

This is from an all-covers album: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Michael 98145:

Did NOT know this: One of the longest tenured punk rock bands, they have been in continuous existence for over 40 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Michael 98145:

Bravo, this, too
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Funky16Corners:

What a voice he had...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm coelacanth∅:

Supercords
  4:16pm Andres:

Mel Torme!! Alright!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Michael 98145:

Vegas in the house !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm coelacanth∅:

supposedly the subject of epistle to dippy quit the army after hearing the song; but then Donovan also covered universal soldier around the same time. maybe both had an impact.
Avatar 🥁 4:18pm Erica:

That Mel Torme track was actually pretty good for a cover.
  4:20pm CupcakeJenny:

I’ve got to get driving home! Have a good week everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm coelacanth∅:

wear your Eartha like heaven
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Funky16Corners:

See you at home Jenny!
Avatar 🥁 4:25pm Erica:

Thanks for tuning in Jenny!
Avatar 🥁 4:26pm David Shortell:

Not the same song as Sham 69's "Poor Cow".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm coelacanth∅:

some of Mel's cheesy stuff ain't 1/2 bad either
...for cheesy stuff
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Funky16Corners:

@David - I'm not familiar with the Sham69 tune
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Funky16Corners:

This was the flip side of her hit version (seriously) of The Lord's Prayer
Avatar 🥁 4:28pm Erica:

Sister Janet Mead is sadly no longer with us.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Funky16Corners:

Yes, passed early this year
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Funky16Corners:

And this - Sand and Foam - IS my fave Donovan song!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Funky16Corners:

This album produced by John Cale.
  4:42pm Andres:

Lots of competition in this group to find a fave!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Funky16Corners:

I could def do another Donovan covers show, and will def do a Donovan show with his recordings, soon.
Avatar 🥁 4:48pm David Shortell:

I saw the 1972 film "Brother Sun, Sister Moon", but the Donovan songs in it don’t appear on its soundtrack album. For some crazy reason, he had to rerecord the songs in 2004 so he could release them as an album through iTunes!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Funky16Corners:

That's crazy! They're in the movie, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Michael 98145:

Always liked Gabor Szabo
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Funky16Corners:

I did a whole Szabo show a while back
Avatar 🥁 4:51pm Erica:

This has been a great show Larry.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Erica!
Avatar 4:52pm Sem:
