Avatar 6:05pm Fatherflot:

Hi Andrew, hi all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm myron feld:

Hello Andrew, MOM and all Sunshiners! Andrew, I loved your post earlier today regarding Bones, communication and what you (and we) love. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm cometothesunshine:

Glad you all could make it to listen in with me. I let Bones do most of the talking today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm cometothesunshine:

I was really struck again making this show, just how well-balanced his mixes are. The levels of all of the instrumentation is just right and so dynamic.
Avatar 6:06pm MOM WHIG:

Oops missed you again F2 & myron feld
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm cometothesunshine:

Hello, Fatherflot - nice to see you here.
Avatar 6:07pm MOM WHIG:

Andrew yes your FB page was very interesting for today's show info.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Mom Whig - a little confessional, but I am trying to get better at communicating my faults!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm cometothesunshine:

Hearing "Eve Of Destruction" again what struck me was the vocal choir in the verses that is mixed back and how Phil Sloan's lyrics are so prescient - he was in his late teens when he wrote this.
Avatar 6:09pm johnyoung1234:

His mixes always showcase the vocals beautifully
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Woo:

We've been on the eve for a long time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm cometothesunshine:

Indeed, Woo
Avatar 6:11pm MOM WHIG:

hey there johnnyyoung1234
Woo - you got that RIGHT!!
Avatar 6:13pm MOM WHIG:

Bathtub pic is iconic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm cometothesunshine:

Now here is a really well- balanced 60s stereo mix.
Avatar 6:14pm MOM WHIG:

And there it is....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Aitch:

Avatar 6:15pm Fatherflot:

i have become obsessed with mixing since I started doing a show here. sometimes I don't post it until mix 14 or 15.
Avatar 6:16pm MOM WHIG:

Aitch glad you're back here
F2 -a Perfectionist are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm cometothesunshine:

Bones thought these mixes out in advance with his reductions - very clever!
Avatar 6:18pm Fatherflot:

MW -- just a total amateur learning by trial and error. i am fascinated by how (Howe) others learned their craft.
Avatar 6:19pm MOM WHIG:

F2 a total learning process - but looks like we have the best here.
Avatar 6:19pm WLSClark:

Bones had so many great recordings. I will wait to hear if you two discuss these things, but if not, can you comment on these things?
1. Did he work with Artie Wayne (who wrote 5D's Flashback") at the time that single was made? Did he comment on Artie at all?
2. I hope you asked about Someday man. I LOVED that 45!
3. Did he find it a bit scary to do "Declaration" as being to old fashioned? THAT song was how I know the words to the Declaration today!
4. Did he comment any on appearing on the TV'er "It Take a Thief" show?
5. How about his work with Jim Holvay and the Mob? Would love to know anything about that session.
6. Did he have full control over Wrecking Crew members when producing those songs?
Anyway, I'll stop there and keep listening.
Avatar 6:25pm Erica:

Avatar 6:26pm Fatherflot:

LuLu To Surf, With Love
Avatar 6:26pm Fatherflot:

Hawaiian guitar lead-- nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm cometothesunshine:

Jan's production concepts were often more elaborate than the songs he was writing.
Avatar 6:27pm Erica:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm cometothesunshine:

He was stacking sounds almost faster than Brian Wilson, though Brian soon eclipsed him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm cometothesunshine:

All of these studios are within a few blocks of each other on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood.
Avatar 6:29pm Fatherflot:

You could probably seen Barney Kessel going up and down the street constantly.
Avatar 6:33pm WLSClark:

Eve was on most stations, but WLS did not chart it and banned it, stupidly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Woo:

The Chicago studio -looks like I walked by that building every day on my way to work-back when I would leave the house for work. Apparently it moved a couple of times.
Avatar 6:33pm Fatherflot:

I don't imagine you're going to get into his with with Tom Waits on this one. . .
  6:34pm BritishInvasionBrinley:

This is fantastic information with a definite legend. Thank you for doing this!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm cometothesunshine:

Fatherflot - we don't touch on any of his 70s or 80s productions. But we certainly talk about a lot of things he likely never discussed in any other setting.
Avatar 6:35pm Fatherflot:

andrew: gotcha. plenty to cover just in that golden decade!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm cometothesunshine:

This is Steve Barri singing lead on Summer In NY
Avatar 6:37pm MOM WHIG:

I always loved this one
Avatar 6:38pm MOM WHIG:

Andrew my Senior Year in HS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm cometothesunshine:

It is a great and ominous sounding record, Mom Whig
Avatar 6:39pm MOM WHIG:

Andrew - the Best LP all the way through - I must have played it zillions of times
Avatar 6:42pm WLSClark:

Awesome story about an awesome tune.
  6:43pm Dakota Territory:

My favorite Grass Roots 45! Great story to go along with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm cometothesunshine:

Yeah - it is such a great song - Dakota
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm cometothesunshine:

love the brief harpsichord solo
Avatar 6:44pm dave gnerre:

Don Randi?
Avatar 6:45pm MOM WHIG:

Dakota T - The entire LP is really good
  6:45pm BritishInvasionBrinley:

One of those tunes that emphasizes the magic of punchy mono! The J&D version is great as well
Avatar 6:45pm Erica:

The best Grass Roots song right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm cometothesunshine:

I agree BIB
Avatar 6:49pm dave gnerre:

So Glad Phil Sloan got his book written before he left us. I reread it all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm cometothesunshine:

Phil left us with so many songs to appreciate. He was also a good friend.
Avatar 6:51pm dave gnerre:

His songs will live forever.
Avatar 6:52pm Fatherflot:

Pure Bliss
Avatar 6:52pm MOM WHIG:

This Turtles one is so amazing too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm cometothesunshine:

Yeah - a great song and great sounding record. The Turtles were a stellar singles band.
Avatar 6:53pm Erica:

I can see why the Turtles version of this song became a hit, yet the Mamas and the Papas song should've also been a hit too.
Avatar 6:54pm MOM WHIG:

I'm so glad I still have all of these 45's you are playing today.
Avatar 6:54pm WLSClark:

Mom, me too!
Avatar 6:54pm Fatherflot:

MW - I got one for on the "Phlorescent Leech and Eddie" album this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Woo:

Same here MOM WHIG. Some of my 45s are from the cut-out bin way back when 3 for $1. Going through that bin was a joy.
Avatar 6:57pm sw2442:

Mom Whig...if you don't mine me asking...how many 45's do you think you have in your collection?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm cometothesunshine:

Erica - I got the impression that the M&P's only wanted John Philips originals out as singles at the start.
  6:58pm BritishInvasionBrinley:

Those Turtles singles always sound so thick and grungy but also totally detailed; you can pick out all of the instruments at any time. Just immaculate.
Avatar 6:59pm MOM WHIG:

sw2442 probably 600 plus never counted
  6:59pm BritishInvasionBrinley:

great So Goes Love instrumental!
Avatar 7:01pm sw2442:

Mom Whig...wow!...I know your 45's library has to be amazing...
  7:01pm DennisK:

Bob Thompson appearance!
Avatar 7:02pm Fatherflot:

Good one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm myron feld:

"Follow Me" is SO good.
Avatar 7:02pm Fatherflot:

Has a real Jefferson Airplane vibe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm cometothesunshine:

Yes, DK - wish I had asked Bones about Bob Thompson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Woo:

it certainly does Fatherflot
Avatar 7:04pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Really enjoying the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Glynis~!
Avatar 7:04pm WLSClark:

Hi Glynis
Avatar 7:09pm MOM WHIG:

GGGG yes playing lots of my favs today.
  7:09pm uptownjen:

I’m really, really, really loving this, Andrew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Jen!
Avatar 7:09pm Fatherflot:

OH, I'm going to play that last one!
Avatar 7:09pm MOM WHIG:

GGGG are you outside in The Sunshine - listening to Come to the Sunshine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm cometothesunshine:

I also love "darling You Can Count On Me" - which Orange Peel played earlier.
Avatar 7:13pm dave gnerre:

Too bad the Everpresent Fullness album barely reached the market. It's amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm cometothesunshine:

Rarely seen a copy, Dave
Avatar 7:16pm dave gnerre:

I didn't even know who they were back when I found a copy of it, Andrew. It's not exactly falling out of trees...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Eric R:

great interview!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Eric!
Avatar 7:18pm MOM WHIG:

Eric - did you hear the Grass Roots & Turtles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Eric R:

no, got back for the Everpresent Fullness...what a glorious name for a band.
Avatar 7:21pm dave gnerre:

Bones' memory for details is incredible.
Avatar 7:22pm WLSClark:

Talk about the HUGE hit of the summer of love!
Avatar 7:22pm Erica:

Everyone knows it's Windy. Somebody said the song was about a hippie.
Avatar 7:23pm DA the DJ:

Free spirit dude.
Avatar 7:23pm DA the DJ:

Avatar 7:23pm Erica:

Avatar 7:23pm MOM WHIG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Dakota!
Avatar 7:24pm Erica:

  7:25pm BritishInvasionBrinley:

Couldn't agree more, Dakota
Avatar 7:27pm Minerwerks:

Good show so far, Andrew! Home now, but was able to dip in and out for the past hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, MW!
Avatar 7:28pm Joe B:

Great show Andrew!
Avatar 7:28pm Minerwerks:

Glad you can finally present this interview to the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, MW - editing took four days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Joe B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm cometothesunshine:

Great Hohner Pianet sound
Avatar 7:31pm Erica:

Never My Love, another great one.
Avatar 7:31pm WLSClark:

Despite Windy being the bigger hit by the band, I would venture to guess Never my Love has more recordings by various artists.
  7:31pm BritishInvasionBrinley:

Never heard this song sound so good. Even more transcendent - this is brilliant.
Avatar 7:32pm Joe B:

love that story of what to do with the solo
Avatar 7:32pm MOM WHIG:

good to see you here Minerwerks & Joe B
Avatar 7:33pm Minerwerks:

Thanks Mom Whig, from one MW to another! :)
Avatar 7:34pm Fatherflot:

All time great 45!
Avatar 7:35pm WLSClark:

I love the American Breed version, but this beats it
Avatar 7:36pm Fatherflot:

Thanks for putting in all the work to do this right, Andrew.
Avatar 7:36pm MOM WHIG:

F2 - yes all of this is so AMAZING
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm cometothesunshine:

It is my pleasure and my duty, Fatherflot!
  7:38pm Joe McCombs:

Blows my mind that "Always You" didn't even make the Hot 100. It's on my all-time list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm cometothesunshine:

I agree, Joe - one of the best records of that year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm cometothesunshine:

Pretty flawless
Avatar 7:42pm MOM WHIG:

YES Aquarius
Avatar 7:42pm WLSClark:

NOW, I will have to listen to Franks' song after the show!
  7:42pm Dakota Territory:

One of the best recordings ever! It’s perfect!
Avatar 7:43pm MOM WHIG:

  7:44pm DennisK:

Greatest bass guitar performance EVER!!
Avatar 7:44pm Erica:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm cometothesunshine:

yeah, it is just the best bass on all these with Joe Osborn
Avatar 7:45pm MOM WHIG:

I can still see them performing this song on TV
Avatar 7:45pm Erica:

  7:45pm DennisK:

Joe O = instantly identifiable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm cometothesunshine:

A great fade out
Avatar 7:46pm WLSClark:

The RCA Soundtrack version was released early in the year and went nowhere, but I loved it too.
Avatar 7:46pm Fatherflot:

Bass sounds like fancier James Jameson
  7:48pm DennisK:

Fatherflot: like JJ, but with a PICK
Avatar 7:48pm Fatherflot:

  7:49pm Eric in CT:

Spectacular show!! Bones is so brilliant on so many levels!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Eric!

Two Eric's - hi there in CT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Chop Scott:

Fantastic program Andrew--thanks!
Avatar 7:54pm Erica:

There's one more hour.
Avatar 7:54pm dave gnerre:

Thank you, Andrew for such a wonderful show.
Avatar 7:54pm MOM WHIG:

Chop Scott - glad you are here
Avatar 7:54pm MOM WHIG:

Erica - then to bpn & Gina they are back tonite!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Chop Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm cometothesunshine:

Yeah - it is a longer show today.
Avatar 7:55pm dave gnerre:

Ah, great!
Avatar 8:03pm Erica:

The Fifth Dimension had such great songs which got overlooked compared to "Aquarius"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm cometothesunshine:

I agree, Erica - there was a good artist spotlight I did them a few years back.
Avatar 8:05pm Erica:

Now we're getting into some Monkee business.
  8:05pm Joe McCombs:

I will always think "Someday Man" would have been bigger if Micky and Davy had shared/traded off the lead vox.
Avatar 8:07pm WLSClark:

Someday Man would have been a hit a year earlier. The public just didn't have the Monkees in mind a year after Daydream Believer. SO sad because this is awesome, as is the B side.
Avatar 8:08pm sw2442:

Someday Man...perfection in my opinion...Davy's greatest Monkee record...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm patrick321:

Good evening Andrew and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm cometothesunshine:

Welcome, Patrick - thanks for stopping in.
Avatar 8:09pm Erica:

Written by Paul Williams and Rogers Nichols.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm cometothesunshine:

sw2442 - it is a solid record, it is too bad radio was angry at them starting in 1968.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Chop Scott:

I am so happy this continues on tonight!
  8:09pm Dakota Territory:

In my top 3 of Davy’s Monkees songs. Just incredible.
  8:12pm Joe McCombs:

I have an old VHS bootleg of "33 1/3" with two different running orders.
Avatar 8:13pm MOM WHIG:

good to see you here patrick321
Avatar 8:14pm Erica:

This reminds me, I never got to catch up on that Mike Nesmith tribute episode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm cometothesunshine:

Joe: I would say in general that the BluRay version we put together in 2016 is better because for a large chunk of it we found the original video camera 2 inch reels. Those were cut in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm cometothesunshine:

Well worth a listen, Erica.
  8:15pm BritishInvasionBrinley:

That televised version was sure bizarre to experience after being used to the other version! Love those commercials.
Avatar 8:15pm Erica:

I just discovered your show then Andrew. I didn't tune in because I thought I missed it lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm cometothesunshine:

The archives have lots of episodes, Erica!
  8:16pm DennisK:

Sooooo many missing tapes.... crazy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm cometothesunshine:

DK - A big project with more than one corporate entities paying the bills!
  8:18pm Dakota Territory:

Sadly, this is one of three Monkees B-sides not to make it onto Billboard. I believe it did chart in Cashbox though.
Avatar 8:18pm Erica:

I'll be sure to find the time to catch up.
  8:19pm DennisK:

Totally worth the time, Erica!
  8:19pm DennisK:

(Understatement of the decade)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm cometothesunshine:

It is interesting seeing how different the charts were for the lower charting records, Dakota.
Avatar 8:19pm WLSClark:

Great story on Someday Man! Loved the whole interview.
  8:21pm Santos L Halper:

Thanks Andrew, this was great! Will catch the first half on archive. Is that Blu-ray 33 1/3 you mentioned still available?
  8:22pm DennisK:

"Finite relationship".... a very interesting observation! And obviously so true - history proves it!
  8:22pm DennisK:

Such a great conversation, Andrew - well done!! Thanks from us all!!
