Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Was discussing this with SheilaB a tiny bit... The Academics (SKOOL) can ruin 'Poetry' for you with analysis & chastise you for not 'understanding' well enuff... But as I see it - *everybody* uses Wordz - & enjoys them - & tries to make them serve themselves... & that's all it is - in one sense...

Funny thing about Fuzz - you think it would complicate the soundwave & make it 'fuzzy' - but actually it's cutting off overtones - making it more electronic & 'synthetic' & a more 'direct' wave.

my younger daughter just asked if WFMU ever plays modern music. i said yes, all the time, it just depends on which show you listen to. she asked 'like what kind of modern music', so i said all different kinds, rock, kids music, just a lot of recently released stuff, but i said not really any 'pop' music. then she said the only type of modern music IS pop music. sigh. (she's been exposed to all different kinds of WFMU programming since her birth).

Personally - the mid20th Century (say) accident of the collision of Pop & Art is what fascinates me most? That it could even happen. All the boundaries dissolved under Modernism. What is say 'FolkMusic' with Mass Media ?? What is 'Classical' after Schoenberg & Cage & TheBeatles? It's a big beautiful mess...
Aiming for Chart Success is an interesting Science. But in Music as in all else: More & More is owned by Fewer & Fewer. The label may look just the same - but - it kinda ain't...

Ah but 'Modern' is (PostPost)PostModern ...which famously trucks in whatever Pastiche one likes.
As Beck observed in 'Soundbreaking' (okay, in the context of Recording Tech) - all eras exist @ once now...
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

We were just the same ! Back then, Sinatra was Theirs, not mine ...which he was responsible for in no small part...
  2:46pm Dean:

To me the whole notion of the postmodern is hubris and BS. We are, have always been, and always will be modern.

...the old century Analog ear is probly gonna be different than the new century Digital ear. We savor the human - they probly cringe @ anything less than autotuned sheen - mixed for earbuds or whatever it is...
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Postmodern' as a word is a grammatical oxymoron - but deliberately I think. To make a point. It was first used in the early 1970s in Architecture I think - to describe facades on the form of buildings that looked 'Classical' ...a kind of artificial NeoClassicism to an extent...
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Modernism was the 20thCentury Revolution in - everything. But - that has happened & is Past.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but yes there is Continuum as well as Disruption, I think. PostMod comes naturally out of Modernism, which came naturally out of Impressionism, which came naturally out of Classicism...

Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

As I see it - some major difs twixt Modernism & PostMod are : Mod had Manifestos & every Shock of the New was like a matter of life or death ex[pressed in Style & Form. In PostMod - it's Pastiche - pick & choose from whatever you like. But it's not Manifestos that meant that much, sadly...

"postmodern" is as ludicrous a term as "postpunk", "alternative", "hiphop"... really, "pop" is ridiculous.
- it just means popular.
  2:57pm Dean:

But the analog ear is tuned to, what?, tape, vinyl, radio waves...all technologies that leave a trace of their material on the aural effect.

Charles Moore, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Michael Graves...core postmodern architects, yes, strong proponents of the term. I just don't see how "borrowing" has ever been eschewed, though. Homer borrowed. Shakespeare. Rabelais.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
