You weren't the only one, Threemoons. There was a massive thundercrack around 5am that set off car alarms here on the Upper West Side.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Threemoons πŸŒ›πŸŒ•πŸŒœ:

@Mister Dobalina where you at? It was still dark out or so I thought so....@Roberto YES the car alarms also -- in my sleep fog I thought it was sirens (I am near Sinai in Astoria) but my bed -- a sturdy-ass platform bed with underneath storage--actually shook. I checked for cracked glass this AM, that's how loud it was.
Avatar 12:38pm Mister Dobalina:

I'm in Queens, I was up from about 5am to 6:30 & the storm started at about 6:05am. Loves me a good storm! I guess one can also say that this show, so far, has been quiet the storm of a show.
  12:38pm Peter from Dover NJ:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, I was awake for it, too in north Brooklyn. The kittens ran to the window to see what was what. I think that might have been their first real storm.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm G:

@tim: No time to write up much; heavy work today. But in another site people asked for comments about JazzFest Sunday for me. Copypaste:

I was at JazzFest in New Orleans all day Fri/Sat/Sun. We leave home daily at 9:30am, get home 8-9pm. I know on the weekend I saw people asking here [meaning a non-FMU site] about what I was seeing, but I had no time (or signal strength, or phone battery remaining, etc.) to say anything from the venue on the weekend. So here's a little about Sunday...

It was pouring rain Sunday 7-8am, with rain forecast into the afternoon, so Mary Ellen and I decided to just do one of the eight or ten concert venues all day, and not have to move around from place to place in the rain and mud. (In the end it never rained after 11am...) We did the Blues Tent venue, with seating provided by the venue, so we didn't have to lug foldup lawn chairs as normally we have to. So we saw 6 or 7 sets from 11:30 till 6:45, in one spot.

One midday set included Clarence "Frogman" Henry (a local), who had to sing from a rolling chair (he's 85), but he still could sing super well, hold an audience, joke and improvise, etc. Two people held him up on each side so he could sing a song or two standing up. But he was still in better shape than Phil Collins -- not sure if that's funny, sad, or both.

Later in the same set, The Dixie Cups -- they were the first American group to knock the Beatles out of the top charting 45/single sales position in the mid 60s. They can still sing, too.

(Part One of maybe Three or Four)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Frank In Queens:

@Tim, I second what Mister Dobolina stated. I didn't hear any rain or thunder until I was waiting for the bus this morning, which would've been at about 6AM. I'm a horribly light sleeper, so I definitely would've noticed if the storm had come earlier.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm McGroovey:

I've never actually heard Atomic Rooster. I've seen their records cheap many times, but I've been afraid I'd end up with yet another cheap horrible record that I couldn't bear to get rid of. This isn't horrible.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm G:

Part Two:

The highlight of the day in the Blues Tent, where we were, was Randy Newman, who apparently had a big following at the festival. The staff had to keep clearing people out, over and over, who wanted to sit down or stand in the aisles through the seating area that the Fire Dept requires for performance venues. Super super crowded, but Mary Ellen and I had worked our way forward in the venue when seats emptied between each set, so by Newman we were on the end of row two, center seating. :-) We were maybe 50-60 feet from Newman as he did a 75 minute set sitting at a Steinway, solo. He did his biggest hits, plus others, and two Louisiana-related songs that are popular here (about the 1927 Mississippi flood, and about Huey Long) -- he lived in New Orleans for awhile when young. He kept saying "you're so kind, very kind, more kind than you know" etc. after songs. I think he felt was not 100% of what he was 20-30 years ago, but if he was 85-90% of what he was at one time, he still sounded good. He is obviously not in great shape. Dragged his feet or shuffled, like an old guy (which he is), getting on and off stage, and his head is permanently turned toward the floor. Beat up wrinkly old shirt and jeans -- made Archie Bunker look well dressed. But he can still do his songs (piano, voice) well, maybe not for a lot longer. I think he tried to end his set a little early because he was tired, but someone from the crew met him coming off stage and it looked as if he made him go back and finish his contracted set length, 2-3 more songs lol.
Avatar 12:41pm Roberto:

It might have been 6am here as well, I can't say for sure.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm G:

Part Three (and last):

The Chili Peppers closed Sunday at one of the largest outside stages. Mary Ellen stayed in our seat(s) in the Blues Tent during Deacon John, but I used the bathroom and went over to the Chilis area. Man, it was like it often is when the big longstanding acts do a set -- completely overjammed, and people standing in all the walkways jammed together. Hard to get anywhere if you do not get a good seat several sets earlier at the same venue, and then hold onto it till the big act, which comes on late in the day. I only got close enough to see the left-side video projection. Yep, Flea was shirtless and jumping around backwards, as usual, they sounded pretty good, I heard some of their wellknown songs. I mean, they are getting on in years, and de facto are a legacy act now, but still bring it. Kiedis is making some weird fashion statement these days, I guess -- bowl cut like out of Dumb and Dumber, and a porn stache -- not exactly his early 90s look lol. But they were good. They also did not close their show with Give It Away for the first time since 2004; stuck it in earlier. Maybe they are sick of playing it? Trying to freshen the set?

I then headed back to the Blues Tent for most of Deacon Jones, the closing set there. Mary Ellen especially wanted to see him because she said he was the best and most fun deposition she ever did, maybe 20 years ago. He was nice, fun, fair, very fun experience as a deponent lol. He was a character witness for a plaintiff in an IP vio suit, and as always Mary Ellen is on the other/defense side. The case eventually settled for a 5-figure amount. Just another day at the office lol

@ Candy-O'67 12:50: We are pretty hardcore about looking at the 'cubes'/schedules, and scoping out what to get to when, and sometimes we do split sets that are scheduled in time conflict. Yesterday we decided not to take chairs and just stay put in one covered venue, expecting heavy rains that in the event never happened. But we had great seats in the Blues Tent before midafternoon, by moving up to empty end-row seats between acts...

@drr 12:55: It's 70 bucks a day for 6-7 acts, or even more acts if you do some partial/split sets. Not bad pricing for live music if you can handle the roundtrip commute to and from the fairgrounds, and there is stuff you want to see all day. If the forecast had been dry Sunday, we would probably have gone to different acts from the complete Blues Tent covered venue. Mary Ellen is Cajun, so we tend to hit a lot of Cajun/Creole/Zydeco and other Louisiana and regional stuff (which is really what the festival supposedly is for; they bring in national acts to draw out of towners) -- plus assorted other stuff.

Best thing I ever saw at Jazz Fest was one of the best shows I've ever seen: Betty Wright. (Clean Up Woman", "Tonight Is The Night You Make Me A Woman", etc. One, she was hilarious. Two: she had the crowd putting their hands in the air. Three: it was a Sunday so she said she wanted to something for "my Jesus". I thought we were getting a gospel tune, but nope: she played a drum solo for Jesus.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm G:

@clarke 1:14: Mary Ellen, who's lived in NOLA since the late 80s, always says Deacon John never had a big national chart hit like for example Dr John et al. He mainly makes a living doing weddings, parties, business events, here locally, so she says.
  1:18pm Don F.:

Re jazzfest. Johnny Rivers played the showboat 'Natchez' (here come the Nachos jokes) in '84.
  1:18pm clarke:

remember when the Stomp used to be in (this) tween the fest weekends?? crazy.
  1:20pm clarke:

the deacon never really RECORDED (much, if at all). there are/were plenty of artists who covered songs - but, i think he wanted to write something of his own, and never was happy with what he came up with. so just did covers and made tons of $$ at balls, etc.

This is probably the first version of "Flying Saucers" I ever heard.
  2:26pm clarke:

yes, but i never played with him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm drr:

.....that was my next question.
Avatar 2:27pm Joe B:

same here TOPT. will never forget - in my uncle's basement - that guitar solo jumping out of the speakers and punching me in the face
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Handy Haversack:

K8's singing along now!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:27pm tim from washington:

How's the rest of this Robert Gordon Link Way record? I didn't dig it when I listened to it 25 years ago but my ears have seasoned since then.
Avatar 2:27pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Hard to hear this one in a non-Elmer Fudd voice.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm tim from washington:

Todd-o-Phonic - hahahaha!
  2:28pm clarke:

it's a pretty good album, tim. worth owning. a lot of purists don't care for it. it is called Fresh Fish Special.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Polyus:

Just coming in to say the same thing Todd - completely forgot that bit until now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm drr:

not wild about this guy as a singer. He reminds me of John Travolta in Grease but less committed.
  2:30pm Don F.:

Great mix Joe B.!
Avatar 2:30pm Joe B:

"He reminds me of John Travolta in Grease but less committed." that's exactly what I like about him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm drr:

Loved the band sound on that Flying Saucers RnR though.
Avatar 2:31pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

In one of George Pelecanos's earlier crime novels there is an incredible one paragraph description of a live Wraymen show. Maybe Mike Lupica knows which novel I am referencing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm drr:

@Joe: would love to hear Link do "Greased Lightning".
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:31pm tim from washington:

Thanks, clarke! Robert Gordon records seem to be still easy to find in the cheap bin.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Handy Haversack:

When you get tired of running, you can always bungle.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Stillwell Coney Islander:

Hola Handy !
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm tim from washington:

drr - I think your confusing Grease Travolta with Vinnie Ba-ba-ba-barrino.
  2:32pm clarke:

yes, he doesn't get a good shake from 'billy crowd, but it took link wray to make him ROCK.
  2:34pm morphe':

Thanks Joey B and all ... must "exit stage left=>"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:35pm tim from washington:

This Creedence cover is bad ass! Link Wray also launched Guitar Wolf''s look.
  2:37pm Sylvia's Mother:

"I like to think Spinal Tap and The Rutles exist in the same universe." Don't they?
  2:39pm Sylvia's Mother:

But Mr. Rivers was born in NY.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm myron feld:

@TOPT: I read (or I think I did) all the Pelecanos books, but I don't recall the Link passage -- which one is it from?
  2:40pm Tim from LH:

Nice set of Link tunes. I’ll have to spin Black Widow in his honor ( after the show of course)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm drr:

OK, yall are the right people to ask I'm sure: is there a way to definitively tell if gasoline is contaminated with water? Especially a way I can do it at home in my yard and not a lab?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm drr:

And if it is, how the hell do I throw it away??
  2:43pm clarke:

just run the engine until it runs out of gas
  2:44pm clarke:

let it run out of fuel - then make sure the tank is dry - and put gas back in and see what happens.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Handy Haversack:

Then dip a dolphin in the tank to make sure it's empty!

No clue here, drr, sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm drr:

clarke: did that! But I have at least a gallon more in the gas can. I'll put it in my truck if it's too-high ethanol for the mower but I obv can't put watery gas in my vehicle.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:44pm spodiodi:

and/or use stp/frygas/heet, etc?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm spodiodi:

drygas*
Avatar 2:45pm Mister Dobalina:

Had to step away for a while, back now & I see we are still jammin'....
  2:45pm Claudia Lily:

Hi Joe!!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm spodiodi:

that's maybe too little for the products i mentioned
  2:46pm clarke:

you may have to prime the carb when you run it out of gas - just take the air filter off and fill that sponge with gas or get some starter fluid.
Avatar 2:46pm Joe B:

hey Claudia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm drr:

spododi: thanks, I always forget about that aisle at AutoZone with the magical products.
Swag For Life Member 2:47pm captain beef fart:

I once used starter fluid to fire a potato gun. Bad idea.
  2:47pm clarke:

just don't use that can with the gas - until you make sure that there's no water in THAT!!
  2:47pm clarke:

MAKE SURE you have pure gas next fill-up!!
Swag For Life Member 2:48pm captain beef fart:

Go electric.
  2:49pm clarke:

capt beefheart does not live in new orleans, ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm drr:

I'd mow over the cord. I actually did mow over my extension cord.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Marley P. Dogg:

Great show today! (As always!)
  2:50pm clarke:

if you still have problems after ensuring that pure gas is running, you might need to clean out the carb. i can take a look at it, dave, sometime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Michele with One "L":

LOVE THIS COVER
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm drr:

I haven't found a version of "These Days" I don't like, but it seems pretty perfect for CP. I like the Fountains of Wayne one.
Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Harry Corvair:

Ha! Last concert I saw was Arsun opening for Cat Power!!
  2:52pm toorushed:

Another fine show Joe !
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Mike From Brooklyn:

Hello Joe & listeners!
Been listening on and off while I attend to other essential stuff. I too love Cat Power's version of 'These Days'. I like Nico's and also saw Jackson Browne sing it with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on a PBS fund raiser show that I stumbled upon a few weeks ago. I liked that version too but I don't like his own version (though it's his song.)
Avatar 2:58pm HyperDose:

Lovely show, Joe
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:58pm pollypinocle:

Thanks for the always incredible show, Joe!!
  2:58pm clarke:
