Good catch, WR! Fixed it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Franco Twinkie:

Gary, I'm gonna go get tacos. You want something?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:00pm WR:

According to Discogs the track is credited:
Too Much Mystery
Lyrics By [日本語詩] – 浅川マキ* (Maki did the Japanese lyrics)
Written-By – B. Crutcher*, H. Banks*, R. Jackson* and yes Otis Clay did a Hi records/Memphis recording of it.

Mesmerized by Dead Spring...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Gary:

Drowsy! Loving the company and if you want to learn more about Maki, best place is the Honest Jons compilation that came out in 2015 -- mostly different tracks from what we're playing tonight, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Actually, I would rather have what you had Gary, but I'm starving and want to eat right NOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Gary:

This one's an Oscar Brown Jr. track from 1960 -- where did she find it, I want to know. I need a Maki biopic or graphic novel bio
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:11pm WR:

Interesting that on Dead Spring Maki is credited with the music and the lyrics are credited to writer / manga artist Mori Masaki. Enka flavor on that one.

Revolution Rabbit- Yes!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Zipperhead7:

Sounds like Lester Bowie meets Arto Lindsay
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm chresti:

Yeah RR, smoky
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm WR:

大砂塵 is word by word: big or great / sand / dust or trash (as in dust pan).
The CD on discogs credits Maki for words and music. If we could understand the lyrics we might know better how to render it.
  8:41pm Akiva:

I just finished the last of my ramp butter. Gotta get out and find some more. And hopefully some morels! Loving this music. The last trip I took before the Coco was an epic tour of Japan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Gary:

If you google it, you get endless hits for Johnny Guitar, which doesn't mean that's what it means, exactly, but how might one have creatively translated Johnny Guitar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Gary:

Akiva! nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm melinda:

digging the tunes
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm chresti:

Nice vocal fry there
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Zipperhead7:

Definitely hearing Marianne Faithful. Jeez this is great -- so bluesy. Will have to download this show and burn onto CD

Helloooh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gary:

RW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm melinda:

so good
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm WR:

Yes, for some reason the 1954 Joan Crawford US movie Johnny Guitar was titled 大砂塵 (dai-sa-jin) which was highly regarded by some Japanese critics. 塵芥 じんかい jin-kai is trash or worthless thing. So it probably does have something to do with the movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Gary:

Great Trash mebbe?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm WR:

Goddard and Truffaut and Almodóvar all think highly of the movie Johnny Guitar, guess I should watch it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Gary:

I remember loving it, but it was so long ago that I saw it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Gary:

It's more fun in the theater if you get the chance
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Zipperhead7:

I can imagine Van Morrison covering this back in the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm northguineahills:

so beautiful, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Gary:

So this one is a Langston Hughes poem, possibly "Cross"?, with music by Maki
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Gary:

NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Ike:

Meow!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm WR:

I looked on Japan Amazon and don't find any book on Maki besides her being a chapter in a book by 寺本 幸司 (Koji Teramoto) who produced her second album and maybe others (didn't look). They do have a novel written by Maki and a collection of her writings; some essays and some lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Gary:

Ike! Wow, that's surprising. When I went to the Tower Records in Shibuya in 2010, the year she'd passed, there were a couple of CD towers of all of her work then in print on display on the ground floor and another floor
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm chresti:

I wonder about Pignose and Letters
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm caroline from atlanta:

catching up on chat - I watched Johnny Guitar recently and enjoyed it a lot. actually was listening to some Bodega Pop from the archives recently and got a huge kick out of the Sammy Clark Baka Hawak/Johnny Guitar from the March 23 show :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gary:

Me too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Gary:

OMG, I forgot about that one, Caroline, haha
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm WR:

Lots and lots of recordings listed but just seeing the books that I mentioned.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:28pm chresti:

a little Buffy and Melanie
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:28pm WR:

Have to be more than good with a dictionary to figure out which Langston Hughes poem provided the lyric for "cross the stream", which also could be translated as "against the flow" but neither seem like Langston Hughes words, I think his words would be something both more poetic and more concrete, that being part of his genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Gary:

I wonder if it's this one: www.poetryfoundation.org...
  9:30pm headcleaner:

What a scorcher
  9:32pm headcleaner:

BTW it looks like The Knave will be our next horse to ride, not Sam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Gary:

Yeah, I just saw that, sorry for the confusion! Will post a link in about 10 mins or so
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm WR:

Gary, that one has basic enough words that I will try to listen back from the archive. I was wondering if Hughes had written something called Crossing, and then you came up with Cross.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm WR:

And there is Crossing Jordan:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Gary:

WR, that seems plausible, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Ike:

I don't know much about Japan but I've been watching Tokyo Vice on HBO Max. Anybody else seen it? So far it depicts early 2000s Japan as grossly sexist and its reporters as just believing everything the police tell them blindly, so not very flattering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm northguineahills:

@Ike: Japanese society is VERY sexist. Female professionals are still very rare, and everything is a boys club. There are a reason a lot of Japanese artistic ex-pats stay in the US.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm WR:

Don't know Tokyo Vice but sexist is par for Japan, but reporters believing the police blindly, not so much. Lots of muck raking journalism in Japan, for anything that can be sensationalized.
  9:47pm passiflora:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Gary:

Hey Kids! Do you like musical expression? If so, stick around after 10 pm because they'll be even more of it when The Knave fills in for Sam with his thrill-packed Five Miles to Midnight! Tonight's show, "Totes Horsin'" wfmu.org...
