@RevRabbit The WWII gap owes to a recording ban from August '42 to November '44 because of a musicians strike. It started over royalties from jukebox play, as jukeboxes were edging live bands out of lots of smaller venues. en.m.wikipedia.org...

What a pleasant suprise to wakeup in the grand ballroom with you big band folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am PigeonsAndRust:

@Rev Rabbit, nah, it was all because Petrillo had cajones! Another WWII rationing misconception was that there was a gas shortage...but nope, we were the world's biggest exporters! We didn't have rubber, however, so rationing plus a national 30 MPH speed limit were instituted to save our tires.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...' The other major cause of the decline of the big bands was World War II itself—and the resulting loss of band members who were drafted, curtailment of traveling by touring bands because of gasoline rationing, and a shortage of the shellac used to make records '...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Rosey is Listening on 91.1 MHz:

Really loved that first set. Especially glad I caught it because I have a feeling I'll be underground during Single File.

Heading out in a few minutes to walk into Manhattan and to the subway so I can get some goat ricotta cheese and greens from the Union Square greenmarket to make a slow-cook lasagna tonight.

The slow-cook homemade meat sauce is currently cooking. Using beef I got from the greenmarket.

Well, I'll be listening on my portable radio anytime I'm above ground, Joe!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35am The Oscar:

My favorite Chinese restaurant in Boston is in an old converted Vaudeville hall. You can just sit in this huge ornate big-band ballroom and order $5 dim sum. It's surreal and amazing.
  9:35am P-90:

I enjoyed the “music for Jumpers” guy too. Hi Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The long Strike against Jukebox money is quite an intrigue of its own...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am PigeonsAndRust:

@ Rev Rabbit While there was a shellac shortage, as lac beetles are from Asia, I still find lots and lots more WWII records in the wild than late 20s/ early 30s stuff. And it is true that the pressing quality is worse, due to the recycled shellac used. Another reason for the shortage of earlier records was that they had a slight recycling value during the war.

Fun fact: when radio hit it big after '26 there was serious doubt the record industry would survive at all! Record sales were off hugely even before the Depression hit, and they didn't regain their 1926 peak until Ithink 1938!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

The F-word...
Avatar 9:37am Joe McG:

@Woods: Ha ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Joe McG: I have to read that book that DJ Sheila B read. I don't know much about early Genesis and honestly, none of that music does much for me for whatever reason.
Avatar 🎸 9:40am Son Of Pantz:

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is pretty good.
  9:41am P-90:

Everything up to “And Then There Were Three” is pretty good-to-amazing
Avatar 9:42am Joe McG:

I can pretty much find something I like in most stages of Genesis' career, from the first album to the last. But there are also things I don't much care for.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:42am Hughie Considine:

The urban setting of "Lamb" always threw me. I preferred my Genesis to emanate from a forest glade.
Avatar 9:43am Joe McG:

@Rosey: Glad I can accompany you on your journey to the market!
  9:43am P-90:

Fleetwood Mac vibe on this
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43am Handy Haversack:

Whenever anything from this label is played, my entire childhood nods grimly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I think my problem is that I just never liked Peter Gabriel's voice. It always seemed very cold to these ears, so nothing ever resonated.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:44am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Joe and Yips in the sun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Loves Gabriel ! ...But that early Genesis supposed to be good I just never really crossed paths with somehow. When I hear it it's okay, but seems like KingCrimson that didn't reach puberty or something ...& later Genesis is just MTV Pop...
  9:47am KWilde:

Paul McC tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...so I could just be underinformed (again)...
  9:48am P-90:

@Hughie: that’s spot-on about “Lamb’s” departure from the English countryside-y nursery rhymes and folk tales vibe that dominates the other pre-sellout Genesis albums. But even on “Lamb”, that urban setting is quickly left behind for an almost D&D-like series of traps and cages the hero has to pass through….
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that makes it sound intriguing...
Avatar 9:50am syddog:

this is nice :)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:50am JeremyB:

  9:52am P-90:

+1 for Whitmore Sisters! That track really made an impression
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:52am Hughie Considine:

@P-90, with that in mind, I'll have to return to it. I feel like I never saw it through to the end ...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:52am Brian in UK:

Did Peter Gabriel ever dress up as a flopsy bunny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Polyus:

I Loved a Lass aka The False Bride. I knew this was familiar from somewhere - so many of those old songs go by multiple titles.
Avatar 🎸 9:55am Son Of Pantz:

Avatar 9:57am Joe McG:

"Flopsy Bunny" is a great song title. Esp. for this time of year.
  9:58am P-90:

I’m listening on my phone, at first glance at the Chat on the screen in the sunlight, “Carolyn Hester” looked like “Charlton Heston”. For a split second, I was willing to give old Chuck props for helping her with her career…

In the song I Loved a Lass the verse,

And the men in the forest they ask it of me
Saying "How many strawberries grow in the salt sea?"
I answered them back with a tear in my eye
"How many ships sail in the forest?

John cleared his throat, cocked his head, squinted at her and took his best shot. “Uh, pardon me, ma’am, but do you know about Jesus?” She glared at him like something slimy just crawled across her foot. “I’m talkin’ about ‘Jesus, the Missing Years’” he said, and launched into his hilarious spoken word opus by the same name while she watched him, curiously as she sipped her drink, becoming more enthralled by the moment. By the time Jesus met his Irish bride and rented a flat on the Lower East Side, as the story goes, she was hooked.' pleasekillme.com...

If there had been any more songs mocking the Eucharist, I was going to have to change the channel to K-ROCK

My favorite Jesus track is a Humble Pie song, I believe that Kevin Nutt played the original on his show once:

Great show. Loved the Jesus medley and I'm Jewish! But hey, so was Jesus!

Love the set Joe, have you watched or listened to Jesus Christ Superstar lately? Would've been nice to have Ian Gillian in the movie.
