Der Osten Ist Rot

Added to the reissue of Der Osten Ist Rot, this song was originally on 1987 Holzer Czukay album Rome Remains Rome & also the only single released from the album. The album (& song) features CAN members Czukay, Michael Karoli, and Jaki Liebezeit, accompanied by Jah Wobble, Ollie Marland and Sheldon Ancel. All these members worked various on CAN sideprojects & Jah Wobble projects (ie solo material + Invaders of The Heart) "The song features a musical sample of Pope John Paul II's sermon during the Easter celebrations. Parts of the speech are in Latin, English and German. Czukay added a lounge beat and some odd effects.Czukay happened to watch the broadcast on television and recorded it from his TV set. He mentioned the pope in the liner notes of his album Rome Remains Rome as Popestar Wojtyla and his swinging nuns. The song was released with a music video which features archive footage of Pope John Paul II during public appearances. The video closes with trick footage of the pope kneeling down to pray while Czukay kneels in front of him and takes out the pope's wallet, after which he quietly walks away. The song met with some controversy at the time."

XTC  Life Begins At The Hop (First Rehearsal Extract)   Favoriting Coat Of Many Cupboards  Virgin  1979  CELLAR OF THE AFFAIR CLUB, SWINDON, FEBRUARY '79 -- Colin Moulding: "Recorded in the cellar of our manager's club, here amongst the Schweppes and the Britvics, this early protype struggles to get airborne. Upstairs the Sensuous Jay [go go dancer] shook all she had [and she had a lot] for lunchtime regulars and the lonely. We had our distractions I'm sure, but no one seemed to notice me coming in sixteen bars too late with my vocals. But hey, make way for the real thing..." -- "Andy Partridge: "This snippet has us in the cellar of The Affair Club in Swindon, where we would congregate to rehearse. The club was owned by our manager at the time, Ian Reid [The G is silent].For some reason Terry wasn't there, working late, illness, I don't remember. But all he same we've decided to try out a new song of Colin's with my ropey Hammond drum machine. Dave plays the tremolo figure. I'm on stab and cluck guitar with Colin rumbling on bass."    0:20:23 (Pop-up)
XTC  Life Begins At The Hop (First recording, unused)   Favoriting Coat Of Many Cupboards  Virgin  1979  STUDIO 1, TOWNHOUSE STUDIOS, GOLDHAWK ROAD, LONDON. MARCH '79 -- Colin Moulding: Nineteen Seventy-nine was the year we became TV friendly and this tune I think started it off for us. Although we had appeared on the box before, really unless you had done a Top of the Pops you remained invisible to the general public. But our faith in the magic spell of appearing on this legendary programme was severely shaken when our chart position plummeted just days after our performance went out to the masses. Having said that, I think it's one of our better excursions into that world of young fizzy pop. Lots of manor to minor going on in the verse made for a nice tension with the melody. It's probably something I've gotten into again lately. Andy Partridge: "We felt that we ought to try out Steve Lilllywhite as a potential producer and the newly opened Virgin Goldhawk Road Studios [site of the old Goldhawk Film Studios]. Nobody was sure whether this would make a single. It did ultimately, but this recording was never used. It has a spikier feel than the Drums And Wires version and some of the guitar parts are different, 12 string over the fade, bluesy bass etc. Ironicallyl it was John Leckie who suggested we might like to work at these studios for the GO2 album. I remember all piling into a car to take a look around, only to be met by a brace of amused builders and finding ourselves in an empty shell. "Bit too early, it's not built yet, lads."    0:21:43 (Pop-up)
Bill Nelson's Red Noise  Don't Touch Me (I'm Electric)   Favoriting Sound-On-Sound  Harvest  1979  I do believe Bill Nelson might be drawing a bit from the Andy Partridge approach to music making. Coincidentally, session musician Dave Mattacks played short stints in both Bill Nelson's Red Noise and XTC. -- "Nelson formed Red Noise after dissolving Be-Bop Deluxe... An interview with Bill Nelson in 1979 hints that several of the songs in Sound-on-Sound were written during his Be-Bop Deluxe days and might have been included in any Be-Bop album subsequent to Drastic Plastic had that band remained together. However, Nelson also makes clear that he regarded Red Noise as an escape from Be-Bop Deluxe rather than its continuation: "Drastic Plastic was the last-ditch attempt to get the band to change a bit but it was difficult for people to accept.""    0:25:44 (Pop-up)
Joujouka  Don't Touch Me (I'm Electric)   Favoriting Never Look Back  Mad Skippers / Digilla / Psy-Harmonics  2006  Discovered this by accident. It's not really my thing, but I'm fascinated that a band would not only cover "Don't Touch Me (I'm Electric), but perform it like this, as compared to the original. Wikipedia helpfully (only) adds this discription: "Joujouka is a Japanese big beat project from Tokyo formed by Takeshi Isogai and Tsuyoshi Suzuki." Well, ok then.    0:27:40 (Pop-up)
Mouth Congress  What Do I Wear On A Trip To The Moon?   Favoriting Waiting For Henry  Captured Tracks  2021  Released December 10, 2021. "In 2011, Paul dug out an old VHS tape of one of the live shows. It was footage of Scott singing (or rather, screaming) a noisy punk song called “Showland.” In it, he strips down to his underwear, peeling off layer after layer of clothing until almost naked on stage. The sight of one of the Kids in the Hall covered in sweat, writhing on stage like Iggy Pop, was something he felt comedy fans might actually enjoy seeing. Naturally, Scott agreed and they decided to make a ‘documentary’ about the band. At the same time, Gord Disley suggested they upload some classic Mouth Congress songs to Bandcamp, so they dumped everything - over 600 recordings - onto the site. Some of them were just jams, crude beyond description. Others were professionally produced, and many were live tracks. Mouth Congress never made much of a distinction between the stuff that sounded like real music and the stuff that was just creative ‘junk’. They loved all their creations equally. One day in 2019, Mike Sniper of Captured Tracks stumbled upon the Bandcamp page, got in touch with Paul and Scott, and suggested assembling a compilation of the best recordings to be officially released for the very first time. So Paul and Scott chose 30 songs to share with the world and that’s how we got the first Mouth Congress compilation, Waiting for Henry. Who is Henry? We don’t really know, but we certainly hope he shows up soon." An excellent article about Mouth Congress from March 2022 + Find this album & many many of their recently exhumed tracks on their Bandcamp Page: Mouth Congress Bandcamp    0:35:03 (Pop-up)

She has also toured and performed with Nick Cave.  *   0:43:43 (Pop-up)
C.C.T.V  Paranoia   Favoriting EP  Lumpy Records  2015  CCTV are a punk band from Indiana featuring members of Coneheads, and sound essentially the same, with the key difference — and improvement — being the female vocals. The band plays a synthed-out brand of Devo-style punk that borders on post-punk, with strong poppy guitar lines bordering on jangly at times. Egg punk? We think so!    0:48:34 (Pop-up)
Lithics  Excuse Generator   Favoriting Mating Surfaces  Kill Rock Stars  2018  Lithics is a four person minimalist punk band from Portland, Oregon formed in late 2014. Over the last year and a half they have refined a sound focusing on interlocked bass and drum rhythms paired with shrill guitar counterpoint and stark female vocals. In archaeology, lithic analysis is the analysis of stone tools and other chipped stone artifacts using basic scientific techniques. At its most basic level, lithic analyses involve an analysis of the artifact’s morphology, the measurement of various physical attributes, and examining other visible features (such as noting the presence or absence of cortex, for example).    0:50:31 (Pop-up)
Omni  Southbound Station   Favoriting Multi-Task  Trouble In Mind  2017  Omni is an American post-punk band from Atlanta. The band is a duo consisting of Philip Frobos on vocals and bass and Frankie Broyles on guitar, drums, and keyboard. Broyles was previously a member of Deerhunter.Their sound is influenced by post-punk bands like Television, Talking Heads, and Wire, with "mathematical" rhythms and "wiry guitar chords, nervy basslines, and jolting beats."    0:52:51 (Pop-up)

“’Plant Life’ the song is my story of rediscovering my passion for music through New York City dance floors,” singer/guitarist Austin Brown said in a statement. “It’s a distillation from a 40 plus minute improvisation prompted by producer Rodaidh McDonald, and every way we’ve sliced it up illustrates a different mood of the same perspective of ecstasy and aspiration to not only grow, but form roots outside of our own barriers.”

Automatic  Venus Hour   Favoriting Excess  Stones Throw Records  2022  Using this point in time as a lens through which to view the present moment, Excess takes aim at corporate culture and extravagance. The overarching themes of alienation and escapism emerged as Automatic put Excess together, taking writing retreats to flesh out the new songs before decamping to the studio for sprint recording sessions with producer Joo Joo Ashworth  *   1:08:59 (Pop-up)
ESG  Not My First (Rodeo)   Favoriting Not My First Rodeo Single  Renee Scroggins  2022  ESG (Emerald, Sapphire & Gold) is an American funk rock band formed in the South Bronx in 1978. Trouser Press called it "one of the most dynamic bands that New York could offer at the top of the '80s."ESG has been influential across a wide range of musical genres, including hip hop, and dance-punk. The band's track "UFO" is one of the most sampled songs in history.  *   1:11:50 (Pop-up)
French Vanilla  Evolution   Favoriting French Vanilla  Danger Collective  2017  It takes a certain confidence to name your band with zero consideration for Google’s algorithm, but that’s exactly L.A. punk quartet French Vanilla did. And while they might not immediately pop up in your search results, their place in Los Angeles’ queer, DIY scene is secure, thanks to their delightful, saxophone-infused sound    1:14:00 (Pop-up)
Units  High Pressure Days   Favoriting Digital Stimulation  415 Records  1980  The Units were an American synthpunk[ band, founded in San Francisco in 1978 and active until 1984.[They were one of America's earliest electronic new wave bands, and have been cited (along with The Screamers and Suicide) as pioneers of synthpunk, also retrospectively known as "electropunk". The Units were notable for their use of synthesizers in place of guitars, and multimedia performances featuring multiple projections of satirical, instructional films critical of conformity and consumerism. Notable performance art appearances included "Punk Under Glass", where the Units performed in the windows of the JC Penney building in downtown San Francisco, as part of a two-day art installation, and the Labat / Chapman Fight at Kezar Pavilion,a performance art boxing match between two artists where the Units played the national anthem.    1:17:28 (Pop-up)
Drinking Electricity  Discord Dance   Favoriting Overload  Survival Records  1982  Drinking Electricity were a post-punk/synthpop trio from Edinburgh, Scotland active during the early 1980s. The album was not well-received critically, with Trouser Press describing it as "simple, rather plain synth-rock with a strong electronic beat and thin ancillary instrumentation".[After two further singles in 1982, the band split up.    1:20:48 (Pop-up)

The Clean are a New Zealand indie rock band that formed in Dunedin in 1978, and have been described as the most influential band to come from the Flying Nun label, whose repertoire included many major components of the "Dunedin sound". Led through a number of early rotating line-ups by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour, the band settled on their well-known and current line-up with bassist Robert Scott. The band name comes from a character from the movie Free Ride called Mr. Clean.

The Saints  No Time   Favoriting (I'm Stranded)  EMI  1977  Chris Bailey of The Saints passed away last Saturday at the age of 65.The Saints were one of the first punk bands. Tim Sommer sums it up in an excellent (though short) Obsever article: "Almost indisputably, three bands laid the foundations for English-speaking punk rock: the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and the Saints. Completely ignorant of each other and working more-or-less simultaneously on three different continents, these groups arrived at remarkably similar sounds. The Ramones began performing in the summer of 1974, and commercially released music in February of 1976; the Sex Pistols began performing in November of 1975, and released music in November of ’76; and the Saints began playing in Brisbane, Australia, in late 1973, and released their first music in September of 1976." For Your (Re)Consideration: Defining Punk and the Total Genius of the Saints In terms of what to play on this occasion, I picked the B-side of that September 1976 single "(I'm) Stranded" b/w "No Time." Perhaps, fittingly for the lyric "Hey baby there is a brand new sound / called people living underground / It's a story about raising hell / It's my life I know so well / & there ain't a thing that you can do / You can laugh you can cry / you can live your life & then you die / walk around with your hand in the air / but you talk like that you don't get nowhere" www.saintsmusic.com    1:34:18 (Pop-up)
Dog Faced Hermans  Cruelty   Favoriting Unbend 7"  Demon Radge  1987 / 2022  Dog Faced Hermans debut release - A "Triple A-side" 7″ EP. Recorded at Makka Studio, Cambridge by Davy Graham. Original release 1987 on Demon Radge records (RADGE1). Remastered April 2022 by Colin and Andy. Dog Faced Hermans have been newly remastering some of their rare 7 inch singles and gradually building their Bandcamp page to include much of their full catalogue, much of it also recently remastered. I was never able to track down a good quality version of the song I have selected, so I'm overjoyed to finally have a better sounding version to enjoy. Their entire Bandcamp Digital Discography is currently available for €40 EUR or more (20% OFF.) If you don't know them that well, I would strongly recommend considering this method of acquainting yourself. They are fantastic and criminally neglected in terms of the acclaim & influence they would rightly deserve. "Dog Faced Hermans formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1986, and later moved to Amsterdam. The band was closely associated with The Ex. A mix of energetic post punk, African music, No Wave, Free Jazz and improvisation. They grew out the scene of angular noisy guitar bands in the UK. They disbanded in 1995, with members moving on to projects including Rhythm Activism, The Ex, Kletka Red, Two Pin Din." Dog Faced Hermans Bandcamp    1:37:19 (Pop-up)
XTC  Life Begins At The Hop (Unused American single recording))   Favoriting Coat Of Many Cupboards  Virgin  1979  UTOPIA AND WESSEX STUDIOS, LONDON, SEPTEMBER '79. -- Colin Moulding: "Cameron Allen was his name, record producing was his game. In 1979 Virgin Records were convinced that this guy could bring out something in this song, which would be our ticket to American mass acceptance. Cameron was definitely after a wholesome apple pie, which we gave. But I hink I prefer the strudel we had prepared earlier. Not even the addition of some nifty handclaps by none other than Sting and his then wife, Francis Tomelty, could stop this from becoming the rhombus shaped peg in a round hole. -- Andy Partridge: "Back in Blighty, one Australian tour, one Japanese tour, blood, 4x, one colostomy bag laden groupie, one round of fisticuffs with Tokyo hotel staff, too much saki and a marriage proposal later, Virgin have a plan. They would like Life Begins At The Hop to be a single in America, but not the Lillywhite/Drums And Wires version, which they think is too scratchy and Swindonian. Instead, at the suggestion of Laurie Dunne, Australian in residence to Virgin, one of his countrymen, Cameron Allen, is the producer we need to mellow us out. What were they thinking of? This is what came out of the session, only to be hastily locked away. A very odd, half awake, dream state take, sounding as if one side of the stereo cut out. Skanking twelve string swaps with smooth cheese Californian chord carpets. Sting and Frances Tomeltys [honest] handclaps unfortunately failed to lift it.    1:39:42 (Pop-up)

De nos frères blessés OST

440HZ

2022

The pop world is divided into two categories. On the one hand, groups that create new things out of old ones. We know them, we have the names. Yawn, yawn. On the other, those who create old things with old ones, left behind by the wars they have not lived, in search of times they have not known and consoles on eBay in the hope of sounding like Velvet Underground. Just as pathetic as the first, the whole thing coupled with an obsession for imitation which gives their future a taste of an old biscuit dipped in formalin.

Death Valley Girls  The Universe   Favoriting Under The Spell of Joy  Suicide Squeeze  2020  While the hazy creep if bleeding skull candles still waft through DVG's music this is essentially a white magick album, pulsating with light and sunshine and bursts of raga-punk exuberance. The group feels less like a band and more like a travelling caravan. At their core, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Bloomgarden and guitarist Larry Schemel channel Death Valley Girls' modern spin on Fun House's sonic exorcisms, early ZZ Top's desert-blasted riffage, and Sabbath's occult menace.    1:46:40 (Pop-up)
Aquaserge  Si tu t’en vas   Favoriting La Souterraine C'est Extra  Meridian  2018  Aquaserge’s resolutely polymorphous music draws from sources as diverse as pop, free jazz, psych, noise, experimental rock from the 1960s and 70s (think kraut to Canterbury to ZNR et al), vintage Italian & French film music, all ingested and playfully transmuted into their own, unique, cinematographic sound.    1:51:10 (Pop-up)
Vendredi Sur Mer  Lettre A Moi Meme   Favoriting Métamorphose  Sony  2022  Working with Myd, Canblaster, Saint DX, Owlle, Joseph Schiano Di Lombo, Dune, Nit, Apollo Noir and techno producer Sam Tiba, she wrote the 12 tracks that make up Métamorphose. The result is an album that’s bolder and rawer but also more grown up. The emotions are strong and complex, sometimes sexual, sometimes provocative, with traces of darkness and disenchantment.    1:55:18 (Pop-up)

I was wondering the same Scott, the first great divide on the pizza front, I believe... I assumed anchovies were nay, until I had one with of very good quality & I discovered I was very much Yay. (depending on other toppings)... Ah... Wait... What Tyler said above while I was typing this ramble, hahaha.

Kat, (about the song that you didn't know about about above), I didn't know it either... Babs discovers lots of awesome stuff, also surprises me, and generally has a better sense of how to throw it together in a cohesive way in a set, I feel. It's amazing how much we don't tell each other about the show each week. Kinda fun for all of us at the same time, hopefully.
