Great minds, Crosby! Speaking of KC, I haven't been there since 1990 or so, but I really liked it the couple of times I went. Spiney Norman's still there? I used to live in Omaha and bought my music at Drastic Plastic, which is (was?) owned by the same guy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm The Oscar:

I watched an old Siskel & Ebert where they did a spotlight on The Man Who Saw Tomorrow, which I guess had a wave of popularity at rental stores when one of its prophecies seemed to come true. They seemed kind of baffled by the whole thing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Crosby in KC:

@mariano..Spiney Norman's...I'm not familiar with it. I moved here in 1992 so I may have missed it. There was Needmore Discs, which was great and the Music Exchange and Penny Lane (which was pretty mainstream) when I got here. Lots of new vinyl places have been popping up in the last 5-10 years
Avatar 3:33pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Ike .. heh! The Day After was the TV event of a lifetime, at the time. Screwed a whole generation's (mine) brains into a vortex of anxiety for life. Opioid crisis? I have a theory.

America is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but its people are mainly poor, and poor Americans are urged to hate themselves.

To quote the American humorist Kin Hubbard, 'It ain’t no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be.'

It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor…..They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: 'if you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?'

There will also be an American flag no larger than a child’s hand – glued to a lollipop stick and flying from the cash register.

Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves.

This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class since, say Napoleonic times. Many novelties have come from America. The most startling of these, a thing without precedent, is a mass of undignified poor. They do not love one another because they do not love themselves.

Hard to imagine that being accepted as a plausible scenario these days. At least the Littlest Hobo was cute so it was tougher to ignore him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

BruceBanner is a supergenius DoctorScientist
- & the Hulk the purest Id... Great. None of Frankenstein's confusion of which is Doctor & which is Monster... Metaphysician & Golem...

Good evening. Dinner is cooking. The grandchildren etc are here.

Glad to hear you mixing it up on FMU Jon

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Rich in Washington:

I always found Incredible Hulk the TV show weird as a kid. Banner/Bixby's character always ended up in these implausible scenarios where someone would inflict pain on him so he could turn into the Hulk. It seemed like he liked getting hurt, as he was always roaming around and getting himself into these situations. They should've explored the weird psycho aspect of that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh it's all about Schizophrenia there.

How come when he “hulks out” all of his clothes rip off; except his pants?

...well, that's Freudian...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Handy Haversack:

Goblin, Jonathan's playing your song!

Jonathan, please play "A Bugbear, a Bugbear" next so that the kittens don't get jealous of each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm DjLorraine:

Good evening.
That remends me of the Kung Fu series in the 70's. The gentle pacificist always had to Fu up the bad guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Miss G:

Did "Red Sonja" ever have a show?
That was the comic I read. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm pollypinocle:

Great show! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Handy Haversack:

There was a movie, Miss G. In the eighties.

Thank you HH but I guess I'll just live with my memories. I loved her outfit, her hair, and the tagline "She Devil With A Sword." The action part would put me to sleep.

Purple and green are complimentary colors, but of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Rich in Washington:

The first ever time I did late night radio my car got towed! It took me hours and hours and hundreds of dollars to get it sorted out.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm pollypinocle:

You could tell that the Hulk worked very hard on his whole ensemble. Always ripped in all the right places, like a Hot Topic tee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm rx scabin:

To warn you that he is the Hulk. There are lots of other angry people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Handy Haversack:

I think the comic was the best iteration of the Red Sonja character, Miss G -- you're better off!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Crosby in KC:

Miss G, the film had Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger so.....y'know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@MissG: FrankThorne had a particular gift for portraying not unattractive womenz. I had noticed that... Yeah Handy - they'd haft Animate her in that style to make it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Rawk rhythms driving into the Earth & Spacey sounds go together like Green & Purple.
  5:12pm Andres:

Also, the Ang Lee / Eric Bana “Hulk” (2003) was the best at a nuanced exploration of the character on film. I think it was well before the conception of the MCU / Avengers through line so it was able to be its own thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm fred:

It must be my lucky day: I come back from a good dance show, and Jonathan is on the air! (I expect payback tomorrow)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Andres: & naturally - considered a relative financial flop...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Miss G:

Yes, agreed on Frank Thorne, I wasn't remembering his name. I mean, the women in comics at that time were, you know, over the top (emphasis on top) but when I do an image search, in later years the illustration is just nutso.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm lazy rider:

Just reading back here, I picked up a copy from WFMU on eBay of "Nobody Loves The Hulk" by The Traits a while back. What a great song. Mysterious label too, Queens City Records. Great track!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Miss G:

Just remembered, there was a "Teen Hulk" in Crazy Magazine circa 1980. Funny to type that as such sublime sounds are playing.

Avatar 5:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

This talk of the 1970s Hulk series makes me realize ...

All those shows from that time explain why I never went into a "bar" until I was in my 20s. Always seemed like you'd immediately be hassled by a character-actor in a denim vest & thrown against the mirrored wall behind the bar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm 🇺🇦 Ike 🇺🇦:

What Abbazabba said.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Miss G:

ha, Rev. Turnip Druid. Peaceful thoughts going out to the descendants of the old men in the bars I used to go to in the EV. . .
Avatar 5:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

sadly, no, HH ..
And then in the intervening years, "gastropubs" happened and now the character-actors in denim vests & mutton-chop sideburns are left in the cold, poor dears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm fred:

@Handy: I think the vegetable clergy later got the hint and bought a denim vest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In an episode of Twin Peaks: The Return, Sarah Palmer went into a bar and literally almost bit the head off a guy that was hassling her. So yes, enjoy your beverages at home. Cheers!

Avatar 5:48pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

There's at least one classic 1970s-era ride-up open-front biker bar around here (baltimore). Gonna give it a shot, once the denim vest is in place. No time to grow the muttons, alas...

@Handy: Many years ago, a guy had a paladin character with pseudopods for eyes (also a gaseous houri, the guy eventually got a PhD in pure mathematics, made sense)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Miss G:

I liked those albums SY1, SY2, etc. Well OK! Wow, so glad I could stick around and still get things done. Thank you so much Jonathan Herweg, I already shared around the Eugene McDaniels. Congrats on your 200th show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Handy Haversack:

I am totally on board, fred. (Except the paladin part, honestly. We have found they don't quite fit with player morals, let alone character morals! At some point I'll stop being lazy and just write up a "religious fanatic fighter" class and make the break with the TSR-inflected Jehovah's Witness paladin complete.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bitchen show for sure.
