A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Good Hello, Kat, Mr. Fab, Krys O, Scott 67, and Geoff-U! The bar is just over there. Make sure to get lei-d. And: Relax! We'll take care of the rest.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Austin Rich:

Nearly all of these records are ones I found in thrift stores, but this "Safari" record I hauled back from a vacation trip my wife and I took to Chicago. I think another record from that same Chicago trip makes another appearance later.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Austin Rich:

Is that a Nancy comic in your pic, Kat? I LOVE Nancy!

Yeah Austin, I stole that from one of Station Manager Ken's playlists years and years ago and never change it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Mr Fab:

this is a pretty European classical safari.

I'm imaging people in khakis, driving a jeep thru Vienna.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Austin Rich:

Totally, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Austin Rich:

It gets more Tiki after this bit. I put this one on because I knew there was a pretty long passage. Only upon reflection do I realize it's sort of less "tiki" than the others.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Austin Rich:

(Though there is some mambo and calypso, too.)

Avatar 9:25pm HyperDose:

I've heard of bad boy DJs but this is ridiculous
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Austin Rich:

I've been to Hawaii once. I was dating a girl with rich parents, and they took the whole family to Hawaii once a year, partners included. It was a weird resort, and not exactly super fun. But we drank and sat on a beach and it was fun in that way. But I would have never gone if I was paying. On the last day we got to do a little site-seeing that wasn't on beach, and I liked that better.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Austin Rich:

I'm a sucker for Perez Prado records. They are all SUPER fun.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Austin Rich:

This Yma Sumac record was the other record I brought back from Chicago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Mr Fab:

Austin, no Don Ho, Martin Denny, etc? Haven't been in over 20 years, but yeah, had to hit the lounge entertainment. Also, snorkling north of Honolulu is a MUST. Water so warm and clear you dont hardly need to even stick your head under water to see bright tropical fishies.
And native tiki carvers. Got one I saw the dude make before my very eyes that I brought back.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Austin Rich:

I got one carved Tiki dude before I left. And we did some snorkling / diving off the beach. It was pretty fun. But the folks I was with really just wanted to drink cocktails in deck chairs and didn't do much. I largely read on the beach and walk a LOT, trying to see what I could find on foot. Fun, but again, I would have done it different.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Austin Rich:

Martin Denny is coming. I don't have any Don Ho records, but I should have downloaded some! I totally forgot. I sort of threw this show together on the fly.
Avatar 9:39pm Geoff-U:

I was wondering if that was Yma Sumac. Are there any tiki bars in Salem, out of curiosity?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Mr Fab:

Hmm, yeah. Too bad, Austin. There's also the Bishop Museum, and just driving all around Oahu is cool - massive surf break up on the North Shore where you can watch the real daredevils. Sounds like the folks you were with have probably gone to Hawaii so often they've done all that stuff, and to them, when they go it's just like hangin out by their backyard pool.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Austin Rich:

Yeah, that Hawaii trip was "another family vacation" to them. But I did make it to a place the Mark Twain visited when he was in Hawaii, and did some other driving around. (After much coaxing.) But even my partner wasn't as excited about what was there as I was. So it goes...

I've met a much more fun person since then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Mr Fab:

This Tito es muy frio! Lucky I got to see El Maestro live at the Hollywood Bowl not long before he died.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Austin Rich:

That's rad! I missed a lot of cool people because I am a youngster.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Austin Rich:

The "Hits" Da Bossa Nova record is one I bought from a co-worker, in a lot of their records, that they were getting rid of. They decided to stop collecting vinyl. I was happy to take everything from them, and even more shocked at how well kept they were, and how well curated they were. That might have been the best "bang for your buck" lot of records I ever picked up.
  9:55pm Ellen Lovebug:

Hi, everyone! I just got here, due to work. I'm going to peek at the chat and catch up. I looked a bit at the playlist. So much fun! I love calypso. Harry Belafonte, by the way, is quite the activist:www.nps.gov... Oddly my sister is in Jamaica right now
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Austin Rich:

Ellen! Always good to see you! Never apologize for being late! We all have lives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Mr Fab:

harry's 92 years old, and still going.
  9:57pm Ellen Lovebug:

Having grown up there, I can vouch Chicago has some primo used record stores. I basically grew up at Second-Hand Tunes, though I also went to Rolling Stone
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Austin Rich:

I used to work at The Velveteria (I believe I've mentioned it in the chat before), and they INSISTED that we could only play records with women on the cover, looking at the camera, in island dress. It wasn't a bad rule to follow when picking records.
  9:57pm Ellen Lovebug:

Oh wow ha
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Austin Rich:

I can usually find an interesting record store, in almost any city, if put to the challenge. (I can usually find something.) But Chicago was OVERLOAD. Every store we visited had TONS of great stuff. Too much to choose.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Austin Rich:

Skipping records! It must be live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Kat in Chicago:

A lot of stores I used to go to here are gone, but there's plenty still, and new ones open more often than you'd expect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Mr Fab:

The Velveteria, I went there after they moved to LA!
  9:59pm Ellen Lovebug:

That's heartening, Kat. Is The Alley still around?
  10:00pm Ellen Lovebug:

@Mr. Fab, he's an inspiration. Like Jimmy Carter.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Austin Rich:

We visited Chicago in 2016, before the election. I can't remember the names offhand (would have to check my journal), but they were all great!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Austin Rich:

The Velveteria was in PDX for a while, and I worked there, and helped Carl & Karen make a DVD, at one point, of all their TV clips. They were very fun to work with. But PDX wasn't their style, so they moved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Kat in Chicago:

Not sure if the Alley is still around, but if so, it's a shadow of its former self. That Clark/Belmont corner area changed a LOT, and not for the better.
  10:02pm Ellen Lovebug:

That corner was legendary. That's disappointing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Kat in Chicago:

The Punkin' Donuts is a Target now. #NeedISayMore
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Lotis Blossom:

Just arrived on shore, look at that moonlight!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Austin Rich:

Nice to see you, Lotis Blossom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Kat in Chicago:

Weirdly, the L&L Tavern has survived. Haven't been there myself in ages.
  10:03pm Ellen Lovebug:

I distinctly remember stopping at The Alley on the way to the midnight show of Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Biograph on a date in high school and if I remember correctly one of the male companions got his ear pierced there. Though that was eons ago and there might have been more than one stop
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Austin Rich:

My friend Ash, who we stayed with in Chicago, basically had stories of how it all used to be better. We had fun, but you could tell Ash felt like something was gone.
  10:04pm Ellen Lovebug:

I have snorkled in Hawaii, but The Great Barrier Reef was even more spectacular
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Mr Fab:

Nice, Ellen! We're planning on going to Cabo, southern tip of Baja, this xmas. The snorkling looks pretty spectacular there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Lotis Blossom:

I like that vacation too ooo ooo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Mr Fab:

that was George Cates' one and only exotica record, and it's excellent. One of the few records featuring the rare early electronic keyboard the Novachord.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Austin Rich:

This song was a request, by Mr. X, who I believe is not in the chat, but often contributes to playlists and ideas when I'm brainstorming about shows. He usually has a pick that I should have remembered, and didn't. Like this song!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Austin Rich:

I've always wanted to play a Novachord. I'm usually curious about weird synths.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Austin Rich:

The Great Barrier Reef would be amazing, Ellen! How cool!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Austin Rich:

I DJ'd a wedding once, where they asked me to play all Martin Denny while the wedding was getting assembled, before the ceremony. Every time I had this cover visible, someone would come and make a comment, or take an incredibly close look at the cover.
  10:17pm Lindsay Boogie:

Aloha from KKCR on Kauai! Driving home from the studio- had to drop in and say MAHALO, AUSTIN!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Austin Rich:

Good Hello, Lindsay! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Mr Fab:

Ha, I had so many of these rekkids on vinyl, including this one. Yep, always got comments. By the '90s exotica/lounge records were like weeds. Always cheap, so you could very quickly build up a bachelor pad-worthy collection in no time.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Austin Rich:

Totally, Mr. Fab. As you can hear from the skipping, all of them authentic thrift store finds!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Austin Rich:

As a not exactly wealthy person, I don't have a huge budget for records. So I used to just buy $5 worth of thrift store finds and that would be my Saturday night sometimes. Some finds were better than others.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Austin Rich:

But I haven't been any kind of record shopping (except online) since around March of 2020.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Mr Fab:

Sheena's: home of the Lounge Revival REVIVAL.

After all, we are now as far removed from the '90s lounge revival as it was from the original lounge era.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Austin Rich:

Good point!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Kat in Chicago:

That's weird to think about
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Austin Rich:

But Sheena is just home to all the great old stuff that stands the test of time!
  10:23pm Ellen Lovebug:

See if you can bring one of those underwater cameras, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Austin Rich:

I probably should have dialed back that delay.
  10:27pm Heather:

Awesome show tonight and hi everyone! I was summoned and I know the rules. Speak my name and I will appear!
  10:29pm Ellen Lovebug:

Hi, Heather :)

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Austin Rich:

Nice to see you in the chat, Heather! I might be airing some interviews that Heather and I did on this show in the future. This year is the 37th Anniversary of Max Headroom's UK release, and the 35th Anniversary of the Max Headroom US TV show. We've talked to some of the creators, and it might be fun to play those interviews later this year. We'll see.
  10:31pm Heather:

I actually was excited to hear Mitch got to go on this island vacation with you. Though I will say, we have snow here in Rochester and, ahem.... I also wouldn't mind getting away somewhere warm..... 😂

Hi Ellen!!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Austin Rich:

You should have joined us, Heather. The beach melts that snow fast!

I understand you have a pretty formidable tiki collection, Heather?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Austin Rich:

(It's wet and rainy in the Mid-Valley. We were on the patio last night, and I realized we had to get to cover, quick. Can't really just sit in the rain all night.)
  10:35pm brad253:

Tom and Judy send greetings from Pacific
  10:35pm Heather:

Too. Many. Tikis. I became obsessed with collecting them as an adult after seeing them in the Chinese restaurant we went to when I was a kid. That place. Height of elegance in Penfield NY. Plum wine on the house! And red velvet flocked golden wallpaper.... my heart.
  10:35pm Ellen Lovebug:

Wow, how did you get to talk to some of the creators of Max Headroom? That would be intriguing.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Austin Rich:

Hey! Nice to see you in the chat, Brad! Tell Tom and Judy I say, "Hello!"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Austin Rich:

It's a long story, but Heather is responsible! She knows Martin Newell, and Martin was roommates with Steve Roberts, who wrote Max Headroom. So Martin hooked us up.
  10:36pm brad253:

will do. we're having a noise jam so we are multitasking :)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Austin Rich:

Nice! When I'm up north, I need to join you for that noise jam, Brad!
  10:37pm brad253:

((((yes))))
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Austin Rich:

An early date when Marla and I were wooing each other was attending Tiki-Kon, which was a lot of fun! But very quickly after we went, it became sort of an ordeal, and we couldn't really afford to keep up with it. But Tiki People are certainly our people.
  10:40pm Heather:

Not to be that guy but Steve was Martin's landlord. And I so vaguely know Martin! But I am such a fan and he sure did us a favor introducing us to Steve. Sweet, smart, interesting men, the both of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Mr Fab:

Don't think I can make it this year, but Sheena's own DJ Shangri-La will be spinning at Tiki Oasis in San Diego this year.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Austin Rich:

I know they say "landlord / tenant," but the more we talk to them, I have a feeling that Steve might have owned the house, and needed a "tenant" to pay the bills. They probably needed each other.
  10:42pm Ellen Lovebug:

That was very sweet to connect you. And this particular piece that just ended was exceptionally soothing
  10:43pm Ellen Lovebug:

I'm facebook friends with Obadiah, I look forward to hearing that music
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Austin Rich:

For this I used as many recordings of "Quiet Village" that I could find, and just started layering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Mr Fab:

Cool! Did you start them all at the same time?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Austin Rich:

Obadiah is wonderful, and fun to hang out with. Fortunately we have a covered patio, otherwise the weather lately wouldn't have made it possible.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Austin Rich:

No, Mr. Fab. I staggered some of them, so they would overlap. I only had three turntables.
  10:47pm Heather:

They definitely hung out a bunch. Steve features in one of Martin's autobiographies which I was unable to find for you, Austin, alas, I did try!

Ellen, I'm with you, not that I'm FB friends with Obadiah but I've heard their stuff and this is going to be GOOD! Which, all Austin's shows are so...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Austin Rich:

What's funny is when we talked to Martin, he told us that all his books were available in the US via the merch page of his bandcamp. The only book I can find on there for sale is sold out. We should probably tell him again his books aren't easy to find in the US. I'm not sure he realized they aren't.

  10:51pm Lindsay Boogie:

is the static supposed to be louder than the music?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Austin Rich:

In a way, Lindsay. I'm the sounds of waves, along with a couple different records all at once.
  10:53pm Lindsay Boogie:

i’m listening in the car like “it can’t be the reception”…
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Austin Rich:

No, it's supposed to be like that.
  10:54pm Heather:

He did say that but even Wivenhoe Books didn't write me back when I inquired! Maybe I should write them again?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Austin Rich:

Maybe they didn't take a US order seriously?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Austin Rich:

Gonna go a little long. Thanks for understanding, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Aitch:

Thanks for the vacation vibes Austin
  10:58pm Heather:

I have no idea! You know me, I wrote them a whole thing about Sir Nartin but to no avail.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Austin Rich:

Since we're talking so kindly about Martin Newell: you should follow him on social media! He regularly posts essays and poetry that he writes, gets into long stories about stuff he remembers from shows and tours, and stuff like that. And he've very interactive. He even posts videos, about once a day, of him performing from his home. He's a great follow. I recommend it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Mr Fab:

  10:59pm Ellen Lovebug:
