A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Krys O.:

The last time I was at the station i JC was for Marathon 2020 and I attended Vicki's screening. It was so beautiful that I wept. Seriously. Tears welled up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I've gone and bought many of them from her BC page even though they've been free on Ubuweb etc for years because it's always nice to support the artist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Rich in Washington:

I totally agree, Krys O. Her stuff is really heavy. Funny and whimsical and thoughtful at the same time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Mr Fab:

It was cool when I found the DVD that PLU made with Ergo Phizmiz at Amoeba. I could actually go up and buy it.

That happened once with Otis - I found the Raymond Scott album that The Bran Flakes worked on.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Kat in Chicago:

that's amazing, Krys!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Krys O.:

I was a college student living in the dorm above the station. Went to classes after pulling all nighters at the station answering phones. The station manager, Bruce Longstreet put me on as an MC for some of the deejays. I was 18.
Avatar 8:29pm ironybread:

Hi Aitch - everything makes me anxious, I welcome you to my club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Rich in Washington:

Wow, Krys, you actually attended Upsala?

Did any students have shows?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Krys O.:

The goal back then was $30,000. We were worried we wouldn't make it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Kat in Chicago:

WFMU mostly relieves my anxiety, or distracts me from it which is almost as good
Avatar 🎸 8:33pm Cp304:

good evening peoples!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Rich in Washington:

Hey Cp304!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Krys O.:

Hey, Mr. Fab. Upsala College stipulated that deejays attended at least one class. That rule eventually went away.

I enrolled at Upsala without ANY knowledge of WFMU. They never mentioned the radio station in the tours. I actually did radio in high school at the local Greenwich, CT AM station with some other students. I met a student in the cafeteria who specifically went to Upsala in order to do a show. He introduced me to the station. I worked in the record library and was paid by the college. The rest is history.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Krys O.:

I have to admit that even the most abrasive, most bizarre or whatever music that WFMU plays relaxes me and helps me cope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Mr Fab:

Wow, imagine - actually getting paid to work at WFMU.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Krys O.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Rich in Washington:

sorry Debbie... excuse me a moment...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Aitch:

Avatar 8:42pm ironybread:

Mom & Dad gave me a Casio MT-68 around 1986, which I left behind when I moved to L.A. in 1997, and apparently my niece adopted it, but I don't know where it is now
Avatar 8:42pm ironybread:

Given about 20 minutes I could probably scan and post the photo of me on Xmas morning 1986 with my brand-new MT-68
Avatar 8:43pm ironybread:

So delighted you got to meet VICKI and talk to WOBBLY!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Krys O.:

Bought my PT-30 with my first paycheck from Crazy Eddie's records.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Buddy!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Krys O.:

Here's the text: Hi Sister Krys,

I’m excited to announce that Bandcamp is joining Epic Games, who you may know as the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, and champions for a fair and open Internet.

Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services.

Since our founding in 2008, we’ve been motivated by the pursuit of our mission, which is to help spread the healing power of music by building a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans. That simple idea has worked well, with payments to artists and labels closing in on $1 billion USD. And while over the years we’ve heard from other companies who wanted us to join them, we’ve always felt that doing so would only be exciting if they strongly believed in our mission, were aligned with our values, and not only wanted to see Bandcamp continue, but also wanted to provide the resources to bring a lot more benefit to the artists, labels, and fans who use the site. Epic ticks all those boxes. We share a vision of building the most open, artist-friendly ecosystem in the world, and together we’ll be able to create even more opportunities for artists to be compensated fairly for their work.

Whether you joined Bandcamp recently or have been with us since the beginning 14 years ago, thank you for being a part of this incredible community, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come!

Ethan Diamond
Bandcamp co-founder and CEO

Mark Hurst summary of Bandcamp buy out.

creativegood.com...

I will continue to buy on BC until the worst happens but am working on getting all my purchases downloaded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Rich in Washington:

I also got to meet Wobbly's mom, who was incredibly nice (no surprise there)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Krys!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm ultradamno:

If you get his newsletter, you know Mark Hurst has concerns on this acquisition.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:51pm ultradamno:

...WR beat me to it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Krys O.:

That sounds nice, Rich.

I keep my Bandcamp purchase downloads on an external drive. I should probably make a copy of that drive, then copy that drive, and so on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I'm on the Mark Hurst list and listen every week.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm ultradamno:

Adopting a wait and see attitude prioritizing what artists have to say about their experiences under the new regime.
Avatar 8:52pm ironybread:

Aw, I haven't met Wobbly's mom! Lovely
Avatar 8:53pm ironybread:

Folks, never NEVER count on a streaming service to stick around and provide the streams you bought...always always ALWAYS download things and save them to your hard drive where a streaming service can't reach them. The only way to own a thing you bought is to own it free and clear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Mr Fab:

ironybread: you moved...and didn't take your Casio?!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm ultradamno:

Yep. And their are often physical media options, I have a cassette, a vinyl record and a CD coming from today's purchases...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Aitch:

And having an actual physical thing is good too, whatever the format
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Rich in Washington:

I often go for the physical format, especially when it's actually less expensive or close to the price of the download only option. Like for example the Chrome box set or Feedtime box set, which was cheaper than the download option and you get the downloads too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Mr Fab:

Bandcamp's new parent co., Tencent, are based in China, a country that has banned Bandcamp. They might become Bannedcamp.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Kat in Chicago:

I always download any music I buy, and I should definitely get more organized about backing up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Rich in Washington:

I've also gone back and downloaded my previous purchases but as FLACs, while I am gradually converting over to that format.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm ultradamno:

Of course, these days, when buying from overseas....the shipping gets unacceptable (for instance I had to go full digital on the Zombierella single since the post on the vinyl was so much more than the record)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Kat in Chicago:

any digital music I buy, I should say. I still buy physical too but after moving too many times, I am getting very selective about what Things I acquire.
Avatar 8:58pm ironybread:

Fab: I had limited room in the back of my Mercury Marquis. The MT-68 didn't make the cut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Rich in Washington:

So hopefully the new owners keep allowing that. I've lost files for stuff I've bought there and just go back and download it again because I've already purchased it.
Avatar 🎸 8:59pm Cp304:

i needed this song around 3pm, i raged a bit today.. I think pooty may have the rage ray pointed at us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Rich in Washington:

I have a Casio SK-10 that suddenly quit working and I can't seem to get rid of it.
Avatar 9:00pm ironybread:

Firesign put out a new reissue today, a Bandcamp exclusive, and I'm happy to continue to put out future reissues on Bandcamp until such time as they become demonstrably, aggressively evil
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Will the Sound Guy:

Hi Rich and all!!!
Avatar 🎸 9:01pm Cp304:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Will The Sound Guy! How are we sounding?
Avatar 🎸 9:01pm Cp304:

right O Fab!
Avatar 9:01pm Mokka Matti:

I guess I didn't have a clue what was going on with Bandcamp. I haven't ever made very many purchases through it. Sounds like something else to avoid now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Rich in Washington:

Putin dances the poot. We must repeat.
Avatar 9:02pm ironybread:

Mokka - you don't need to avoid them as such, just wade in and see what they have to offer, keeping in mind that they've decided to move in a very different direction and you may need to pivot away from them in future. For now, just enjoy what they have to offer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Rich in Washington:

I think it's OK for a while, Mokka. It's probably the fairest platform for artists to date, which is why we're all in a lather about it being bought out.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Krys O.:

I am feeling run down probably a side effect from the shingles vaccine I had earlier. Signing off. Thanks, everybody!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Kat in Chicago:

Yeah it's very important to a lot of my friends, and the main source for what I play on my show
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Kat in Chicago:

I need to get that vaccine. Good night, Krys!
Avatar 9:04pm ironybread:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Kat in Chicago:

I suggest you post your Casio Christmas pic on the playlist tomorrow ironybread
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Rich in Washington:

Ditto what Kat said.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm ultradamno:

It certainly made a lot of foreign stuff accessible than it otherwise would have been...I have to assume getting to the Syf catalog, for instance, would have been a chore without it.

This "Hush" is a tad different form the Deep Purple version. Daniel Menche def putting a unique spin on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Rich in Washington:

I'll try to keep it suitably dinnery, Cp304
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Kat in Chicago:

Paulstretch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Rich in Washington:

Indeed! It's also somewhat melodic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Rich in Washington:

I don't think so. Menche's stuff is usually fairly minimally processed.

I don't think I could handle that Hush right now
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm ultradamno:

I bought a vinyl copy of Messer für Frau Müller's Danger: Retrobolik a few Bandcamp Fridays ago through a Russian seller and Pay Pal put it on a temporary hold for security concerns. It went through in the end so I guess it wasn't for spy purposes.

Let's hear it for 1970, folks

Hi folks! Just jumped in midstream but better late than never. Always loved this Fahey track

Hi Zipperhead7!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Kat in Chicago:

"Dance of Death & Other Plantation Favorites." Now that's a title.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Zipperhead7:

First heard "Dance of Death" on the Zabriskie Point soundtrack, speaking of 1970
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Rich in Washington:

I had this track on a cassette I taped off the radio as a teenager and it took me decades to figure out who had done it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm ultradamno:

That's "occasional Red Crayola collaborator" John Fahey to me.

Avatar 9:43pm ironybread:

looking forward to digging into this new Sonic Youth joint
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Zipperhead7:

I've never been able to detect a trace of Fahey on that record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Rich in Washington:

It's pretty reet on. Diggin' it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Rich in Washington:

I don't know if they're still online anywhere and don't have the mental bandwidth to look now but I recommend tracking down the Fahey mixtape. Someone put them on Soundcloud or some similar place, but apparently it was rips of a mixtape Fahey made for someone who worked at a Portland record store and they're pretty goddamn cray cray.
A lot of his own music on it but also really bizarre.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Aitch:

Saw some old SY from a morning kids music show 1998 for after the show of course.
www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Rich in Washington:

it's pretty ludicrous getting sad about bands 'breaking up' these days ('breaking up' is just a stage of a band's monetization process - they'll get together again for a wheelbarrow of cash to play for the rich kids of the festival circuit) but SY breaking up means we'll likely never hear anything as 'experimental' sounding from these individuals again. Sad.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Aitch:

SY were a must see whenever they came over.
Real shame to never experience that again, transcendental
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm ultradamno:

They needed to get out of the way of the Polish invasion anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Mr Fab:

Glad I got to see em, at a small club, right up front.
And hung a bit with Thurstin and Kim at the old Rhino Records store circa 1984 or 85. I had bought “Bad Moon Rising” and really liked it but I don’t think they were too well known at that point. Nice folks.Kim told me that she didn’t like “Bad Moon Rising”’s dark, atmospheric production- exactly what i DID like about it! I noticed that their sound was usually brighter / more clear after that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Rich in Washington:

Love Bad Moon. Probably my all time favorite SY record.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:02pm ultradamno:

@Rich Agreed!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:05pm ultradamno:

The first time I saw them was at Hoosier Ballroom in 86. There's footage of it on You Tube. I saw them three or four times after that, it was always a dance party. I always thought people reacted to them as being much farther out than they were at that point. I mean they were never presented as crazy as Sun City Girls or anything.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:09pm ultradamno:

There was that line in Juno about listening to Sonic Youth and it was just noise, I was hearing that from punks back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Mr Fab:

They were a party when I saw em. On the other hand, they did a half-hour live show on PBS (believe it or not) mid-90s and it was pure improv mayhem. ”This isn’t even music, this is noise”- Mrs Fab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Rich in Washington:

I think I saw them on the Sisters tour. Probably 87?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm ultradamno:

I remember Moore and Beck doing a live noise set on MTV (120 Minutes, I guess) which wasn't very mind blowing but pretty funny.

I wonder if Micah could play it on his show as Scientology music.
Avatar 10:16pm ironybread:

Here it is, folks, the Casio MT-68 I got for Christmas in 1984, which James Murphy later stole so that LCD Soundsystem could record "This Is Happening" pbs.twimg.com...

Nuice ironybread.. i think my oldest sis still has our 7.. gonna dig..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Zipperhead7:

Did that Casio have the presets that would play little tunes when you pressed a button?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm ultradamno:

The second time I saw them, Goo had just come out and Kool Thing was getting MTV airplay and suddenly a place like Bogarts was packed for them. Bewitched and STP (NOT Stone Temple Pilots) opened and I remember that latter band seeming visibly unprepared for the escalation. Bewitched were great, kind of lost band of that scene.
Avatar 10:19pm ironybread:

wait wait, is somebody in Sonic Youth a Xenu-worshipper?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm ultradamno:

Nah, Beck is.
Avatar 10:20pm ironybread:

ah, right, that I knew - thanks ultra
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm ultradamno:

...or was, I think he says he never was now.
Avatar 10:21pm ironybread:

As long as Beck isn't an insane douchebag, I'll be content, regardless of his "religious" persuasions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Rich in Washington:

OMG, ironybread! That picture! Pure xmas ecstasy!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Zipperhead7:

I just looked up "Xenu," and that is some of the goofiest gruel since Kathryn Kuhlman
Avatar 10:23pm ironybread:

Zip - the MT-68 did not really have any "demo" mode tunes it could play. Basically if you wanted to use it to play "California Girls" you had to learn the chord changes yourself

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm ultradamno:

That is a sound policy choice!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm ultradamno:

Certainly a policy choice related to sound, for sure.

OK, if he went to Elmira in 1962 and was paroled after a year and a half, how could he form the band on Jan. 31, 1963 in Rochester? Did he find a wormhole?

Avatar 10:50pm ironybread:

Fab, I like the thought experiment "What songs would cause the stream robot to take over someone's show?" I think a show should be filled with people's best guesses. I'll start us off:
El DeBarge "Who's Johnny"
Starship "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"
