Hello Scott and everybody! I'm picking up on theme here. I can't figure out what it is yet.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:19pm tim from washington:

@dave wuz here - Thank you for mentioning the Lee Harvey Oswald Band. I lived in Champaign IL where they hailed from (albeit after their existence). From all accounts, they were legitimate STONE FREAKS.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yeah, Handy. I think he's out there beating the bushes today to find some carrot cake.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:25pm tim from washington:

@Alvy - As I wrote "legitimate STONE FREAKS".

@dave wuz here - I guess that's the way it used to be. By the time I got there it seemed like most of the people on the scene were pretty well adjusted and made polite, boring indie rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm McGroovey:

I believe the theme today is SONGS THAT SCOTT LIKES.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm The Oscar:

Man, now I just want to log off work and watch some movies-- but then, that's how I always feel.
Avatar 3:27pm John L:

The main theme from Blood On Satan's Claw would work well after Valerie and Her Week Of Wonders.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Bimbus Bambus:

one of David Lynch's favorites right here
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm tim from washington:

@Alvy - Rick Didjit is the love child of Ted Nugent and Handsome Dick Manitoba.

Pieces may have the all-time greatest tagline: "IT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU THINK IT IS."
Avatar 3:32pm abbazabba:

Hello Scott and All! This is a fun one.

Also, probably a dumb questions, but what is "sdtk"?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Alvy Singer:

@ tim from washington...great analogy because they covered the Amboy Dukes.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I think it's sand truck. In the snowy northeast, they put it on the roads for traction when it's slippery out.
Avatar 3:33pm abbazabba:

Ah, soundtrack. I'm an idiot
  3:34pm wendy del formaggio:

HIGH ANXIETY! I can sing the entire theme song to this. In case you ever need someone to do that. KEY CHANGE!

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm karlward:

Somehow I feel like a copyright suit just wouldn't phase a real chillionaire
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Gurldoggie:

Really liking the "back to the movies" theme. Going to the cinema was something I had missed as much as live music. Maybe more!
Avatar 👻 3:38pm timinoak:

Two thoughts: that this was a from a Tim Burton movie. and that Tim Burton would be a great WFMU DJ. I'm sticking with the 2nd point.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm tim from washington:

Don't sweat it, abbazabba. I'm the leader of stupid questions on the comments board. I'm sure I've asked questions that are pretty close to "What's the internet?" or "Is this thing on?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Ike:

Greetings, humans! Take me to your leader. Wait, your leaders are politicians and businessmen? Never mind. I'll just go check out your libraries and museums by myself, then.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Andrew_in_WI:

@timinoak Burton relies heavily on Elfman
Avatar 3:39pm abbazabba:

Haha thanks Tim.
Avatar 3:40pm John L:

I'm counting how many of these shows/movies I've seen. So far Pieces is the only one I haven't. Recommended?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm The Oscar:

@John L I don't know if I'd call Pieces *good*, but if you've got a fondness for dumb slashers and sub-giallo horror it's a great time.
Avatar 👻 3:42pm timinoak:

Thanks so much, Andrew. Looking at that wikipedia on Elfman now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@tim from washington: At least you haven't asked things like "Who's the leader of the Steve Miller Band?"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm steveo:

NYPD uses sand trucks as tactical barriers. Coincidence?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm sinner:

I have a rash.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm karlward:

Trick question, Steve Miller Band is a leaderless anarchist movement that pushes nihilism on our schools
Avatar 3:44pm John L:

The Oscar: It's free on several streaming channels, so I'll give it a shot. Thanks! Hey, Blood On Satan's Claw!!!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm tim from washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@tim from washington: Ha! Just a wild guess.

Wait...who IS the leader of the Steve Miller Band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm The Oscar:

Man, Hereditary (both movie and soundtrack) is just so damn good.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm tim from washington:

Oh yeah! Hereditary was a good one!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm tim from washington:

@Woods - I always thought it was J Geils.
  3:47pm The Butterman:

Does Devin E Levins know that you’re doing this show?

  3:47pm Ochre Ogre:

Hi Scott!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Handy Haversack:

There is only one member of the Steve Miller Band, and they are we.
Avatar 3:48pm John L:

I'm about halfway thorough a recent documentary called Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror; if anyone has an interest in that area of horror films it's great so far. It's 3 1/2 hours long.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Baja Joe:

Hello Scott!

Avatar 3:52pm John L:

Nathan, it's streaming on Shudder, but I bought a massive Blu-ray box set that has many of the films mentioned in the doc. Some of those films are on Shudder as well.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Andrew_in_WI:

@John Do they mention "Kill List?" That was a film a day at festivals ~10 years ago that really stuck with me.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Gurldoggie:

Oh hell yes. Exciting AND new!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm tim from washington:

Don't worry folks. Devin is going to focus on the Top Gun and Brewster's Millions soundtracks tonight.

Forgot that Popol Vuh did the Love Boat theme. Their cameo scenes in the Charo episodes were always so great.
Avatar 3:53pm John L:

Andrew: They haven't mentioned Kill List, yet, but I still have a ways to go. They do mention another Ben Wheatley film, Field In England.

I like the Jazzes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...wull - most of the Jazzes. Not like - KennyG aka 'Jazz with the Jazz taken out'...)
Avatar 4:27pm John L:

I was sorry you departed from the soundtrack groove, for a second, but now I just put this Don Cherry album in my Bandcamp cart.

...& as uptight as Wynton Marsalis may be - he's right that - historically - the RawkaRollas are really a branch on the JazzTree...

The Universal Liberation Orchestra sounds like a Micah thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm fred:

Dave Sewelson will be playing nearby on Friday, but there's a public transit strike. I'm conflicted to say the least
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A classically Parisian dilemma ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm The Oscar:

This Roberto Laneri is going straight onto my Bandcamp list.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Handy Haversack:

Made it! Must have been a long mic break or long songs -- my public-transportation karma wasn't *that* good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerknow - it's like perpetual 1968 ...minus the youthfulness & exciting hopeful bits...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm fred:

@RevRab: I was born in Paris but living there never was in the cards. I guess it's a Parisian thing: born there, never could afford to live there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Carmichael:

Heya Scott, brief respite from Zoom hell. Thanks for playing Sparks back there, turned Mrs. Carmichael into a hardcore fan via the documentary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@fred: I lived in Santa Barbara, CA 16 years. Not born there - but perhaps they'd be flattered if I say it sounds familiar...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Gurldoggie:

I vaguely recall that Stances à Sophie is a soundtrack. Epic album, but I've never seen the film. Any good?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'da guessed ToddRundgren on this H&O. Philly I guess...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Gurldoggie:

BTW EVERYTHING is on point today. You're totally inspired. I wouldn't have predicted this Hall & Oates tune, but it just.... fits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Carmichael:

Same vocal style, same percussion bits ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...oh how about reading the album title stooopid RevRab...

Well, you guessed right, Rev Rab!
Avatar 4:59pm Joe B:

hey Scott and everyone
  4:59pm listener monica:

I was positive it was Todd Rundgren with someone else singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm fred:

@RevRab: I had to see Cohn-Bendit pull rank and make people wait, people like Ornette to tell you how inflated his ego is. The part of the 1968 French stuff that was allowed was by rich guys. The others were not treated as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Mark Hurst:

@Davis, I'm torn! The Trunk version has the film vocal on Willow's theme, but the Silva (?) version does sound real good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm nathan:

the popeye movie is awesome. watched it last week
  5:36pm The Oscar:

Busy making dinner, but POPEYE! For whatever reason my family made a tradition of watching this movie on New Years morning every year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm alanSixº:

what year was this popeye movie??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Carmichael:

Wicker man was Nicholas Cage, right?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Still a chance to hear the Rockford Files theme song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Carmichael:

Not like John Wick, who was Keanu Cage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Scott Williams:

Yo Alan! Popeye was 1980 - kinda agonizing to watch, it's exactly what it says it is: Robert Altman letting the cast of Popeye improvise for 2 1/2 hours. But it's got its moments!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm alanSixº:

oh wow nilsson died in 94 i thought it was earlier
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Davis:

Scott. i think i just like ambient noise on music, trunk release for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm nathan:

you're telling me they improvised all those songs and harry nilsson took credit for it? sunuva...
  5:39pm The Oscar:

Cannibal Holocaust is an indefensible film, but boy oh boy do I love the soundtrack. Wrote a piece about it a few years back: https://bostonhassle.com/cannibal-holocaust-1980-dir-ruggero-deodato/
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 5:39pm tim from washington:

Cannibal's obviously enjoying mellowing out to some pleasant strings.
  5:40pm rf:

Thank you for reminding me to listen to the Popeye soundtrack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

"End Titles' a close melodic analog of 'Still The One' (ShaniaTwain tune) which Michele just played & stuck in my head (Thx a lot)...
Avatar 5:42pm John L:

Time's tight, but earlier I was going to suggest the opening credit music for The Duke Of Burgundy. And I just saw that Peter Strickland has a new film coming out; I'm very psyched.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Handy Haversack:

I always enjoy your reviews, The Oscar. Boston Hassle is lucky to have you!
  5:45pm The Oscar:

Aw, thanks Handy! That piece in particular was a cathartic one— it’s a complicated movie.

Apropos of not much, I was at Ersatz Fairway (Food Bazaar) in Red Hook earlier today and they were playing awful overplayed oldies in there, and then "MacArthur Park" came on, and I was like NOOOO, not the CAKE out in the RAIN! Bad Zombie Fairway! No donut!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm dale:

this program has been the bomb!
  5:51pm Listener Robert:

A commissioned recording of "Cannibal Holocaust" is the opening theme music of the podcast "Frightday".

Which reminds me, I saw the new "Scream" Monday and recommend it. There's one bit of clever clue-foreshadowing I noticed in an early scene that I think all my practice with "Lost" trained me to find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm TomTom:

You've gone thru a hokey black hole, what now? Disneyworld!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm JeremyB:

heh, i walked away for a bit and came back to the vincent and bob scene... That put me in hysterics as a kid.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Scott Williams:

@Tim, that's the one! there's a companion record called "Joe Speaks", it's goddamn fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Ike:

Ah yes, the whole corny "man is not an insignificant speck in the universe; man is SPECIAL" shtick in a lot of sci-fi. One reason I loved Farscape (1999-2004) is because it satirized that to some degree. Humankind was just another species, nothing special, definitely no special abilities or skills. The human main character was often hilariously mocked by all the other characters for having crappy eyesight, bad hearing, etc. not to mention questionable sanity.

"I know we've only known each other four weeks and three days, but to me it seems like nine weeks and five days. The first day seemed like a week and the second day seemed like five days and the third day seemed like a week again and the fourth day seemed like eight days and the fifth day you went to see your mother and that seemed just like a day and then you came back and later on the sixth day, in then evening, when we saw each other, that started seeming like two days, so in the evening it seemed like two days spilling over into the next day and that started seeming like four days, so at the end of the sixth day on into the seventh day, it seemed like a total of five days. And the sixth day seemed like a week and a half. I have it written down, but I can show it to you tomorrow if you want to see it."
