Mr. Fab!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Mr Fab:

Hi! But actually I'm just letting Jon use my space so he can do his Johnny Fever collage. *tosses Jon the car keys* Careful with it, now, Jon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm postconsumer:

I'm feeling fabulous... but actually I'm just filling in for the next three hours...
:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm postconsumer:

90% of the musical choices were made by Dr. Johnny Fever... and he'll be announcing everything himself, as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Scott67:

G'day Mr.F & Jon....did someone say Beer??
👍😎🍻🎶📻🌞🌎
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm postconsumer:

Hi Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm postconsumer:

Here's how I described today's show on my social media: "What if I took EVERY DJ break which Howard Hesseman ever made (as Dr. Johnny Fever, on WKRP in Cincinnati), and just... followed his lead?

Would I be able to construct a three hour radio show, with Fever as the host?

I was, in fact, and even kept all the music era appropriate (nothing after 1982), and almost everything was actually played on the program (1978-1982).

They actually played Captain Beefheart on WKRP? Yes! And Prince? No! Tune in to see if you can tell which tracks I’ve twisted the doctor into playing for you...

Just a collage I made, for fun. And then did nothing with. Now, to honor everyone’s favorite DJ, I’ll be sharing it with Sheena’s Jungle Room."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Scott67:

Brilliant Jon!👍😎
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Otis:

Just in time for a little Sly. Love this concept Jon=Johnny Fever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Rich in Washington:

was just getting my hair foofed and feathered and squeezed myself into my Britannia jeans and Earth shoes. I'm ready to boogie down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm postconsumer:

Thanks, Otis! Biggest compliment of my life. :) Thanks for tuning in, Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Mr Fab:

yep, your new name: Jon Fever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Scott67:

Is it gettin hot in here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm postconsumer:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Scott67:

Close, 6:20am here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm postconsumer:

The time's will change, but stay chronological! There will be some gaps as Johnny stays on the air nearly all day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm postconsumer:

This was what I was working on, in the very early days of the lockdown. A labor of love which kept me distracted from things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Mr Fab:

brilliant idea, and skillfully executed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Scott67:

Makes me wanna binge watch WKRP in C now!!👍😎
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Rich in Washington:

This is a brilliant concept! I had no idea he back/front announced so many real songs. Most sitcoms would make stuff up and play library songs for diegetic music bits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Mr Fab:

is this like some disco 12" remix?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, me too, Scott67. I rarely got to watch the show back-in-the-day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm postconsumer:

Thanks! Yes, it was a challenge, but not impossible. I tried the same thing with another fictional dj program and it didn't work out nearly as well. This one stretched to three hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Scott67:

Jon, also unknowingly then a wonderful way to honour Howard now.🌷
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Otis:

Remember watching as a kid, alongside other fav sitcoms like 'come and knock on our door' and 'kiss my grits' and this show with Fever, 'booger'. This is like 6th-7th grade TV watching.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm postconsumer:

Yes! That's the reason I dug it out of storage. When I first finished it, I couldn't figure out what to do with it, so it just sat on my hard drive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Rich in Washington:

I've never gotten over the disappointment that Hello Larry's recurring line 'tie a can to it, Ruthie' utterly failed to capture the American zeitgeist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Rich in Washington:

I would totally listen to a commercial FM station with a format as eclectic as this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Mr Fab:

wait Rich, you watched "Hello, Larry"?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm postconsumer:

I just finished watching the whole series, and I can tell you the music director was pulling his hair out, but yeah... I agree, the Doctor usually had it going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Rich in Washington:

I had to, Mr. Fab, by orders. It was set in Portland Oregon. Plus, Larry/McLean was a radio DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Mr Fab:

Maybe it was a great show. I just know it as a punchline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Rich in Washington:

It was fairly dismal but I remember people around here being excited that a major US sitcom was set in Portland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Mr Fab:

I like "Grimm," tho i doubt it represented the real Portland - perpetually dark, and seemingly very wooded. You'd never guess Portland was a major city - they were always running thru dark forests.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Rich in Washington:

I plan on watching the SNL from '79 with Hesseman with the skit where he plays himself visiting a real FM radio station and all the jocks take him to task for not wearing headphones in his DJing scenes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Mr Fab:

Well hey aren't those carts that he's holding? That's authentic at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Rich in Washington:

The Grimm brothers house was right next door to my friend Toby's house, so got to see them use the street to shoot exteriors quite a few times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Scott67:

I think I better get outa the sack & make a steaming cup of espresso chemicals!
👍😎🍵 But what is meaningful employment??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm postconsumer:

CHEMICALS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Mr Fab:

pre-hip hop scratching pioneer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm postconsumer:

actually... sorry, don't want to be that guy! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Scott67:

This is sounding a little like out 1st TRASH CULT Show. Another Fictional Radio Program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Mr Fab:

From Wayne Newton to Beefheart? Sounds like Sheena's programming. WKRP In Jersey City.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm postconsumer:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Rich in Washington:

Amazing that that Beefheart track was actually mentioned - perhaps because it's such a funny title and artist name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm postconsumer:

Also not your typical morning music, I think...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm postconsumer:

Not that it's too far out of line with Fever's tastes, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Scott67:

Workin for my morning mate!
👍😎🎶📻
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Mr Fab:

Yeah, what's with the audience laughing at the names? As a Beefheart fan, I'm kind of offended!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm postconsumer:

Always challenge your audience. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Scott67:

But then, my morning music is arvo/evening music. Now I live in the bizzarro FMU World.🌏
Avatar 3:01pm cuspidor:

this is goddam brilliant
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Otis:

O'Jays and Zep... whaddya, raiding my record shelves Fever. Love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm WR:

Hello. Oh, damn, already missed an hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm postconsumer:

The truth is, some of this music was actually new to me! But I think Fever had a pretty good ear for what to play... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Scott67:

There's that brilliant word again Jon! Headphones getting tight yet?
👍😉🎧
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm postconsumer:

thank you!
welcome WR and cuspidor :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm postconsumer:

ha ha! My hat will do double duty this afternoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Mr Fab:

Not only am I familiar with everything played thus far, I have and like a good deal of these rekkids. Those more Johnny Fever in me than i realized.
  3:05pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Hey, just now tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Otis:

Same here Fab.

PDS! Hey buddy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm postconsumer:

I know I've said this many times, elsewhere, but Johnny Fever was literally my earliest DJ influence. Started making cassette mix tapes and getting on the "mic" (on my little Fisher Price tape-recorder) between tracks, shortly thereafter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm postconsumer:

Hi PDS! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm postconsumer:

When I was 9, it would have been mostly the Monkees and The Beach Boys, but I was djing... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm postconsumer:

I'm assuming I'm not the only one with that story...
  3:10pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Hey Otis! Good to see Jon on Sheena’s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Lizardner Dave !:

This is really amazing. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm postconsumer:

Thanks Lizardner Dave !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Rich in Washington:

The idea of being a DJ didn't occur to me until I discovered late night radio on my local stoner 'classic' rock station. The thought of playing music I liked while the whole world was sleeping weirdly appealed to me.
  3:11pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Hey there, Mr Fab! Glad to catch this special.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Rich in Washington:

and then discovering the even weirder, cooler latenight DJs left of the classic station on KBOO while scanning the dial. THAT'S when I decided I wanted to be a radio DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm WR:

Recently saw comic strip called Zits that has band names as generation identifier. Beefheart VS. Smashing Pumpkins
www.arcamax.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Mr Fab:

Yo, PDS! Great to see you here, sir. Yup, Jon does "Some Assembly Required" once a month here. He calls it "SHeena 'ssembly Required."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Otis:

Outside of today's show, catch Jon/PostConsumer as a rotating DJ here on The Wiggle Room with new Some Assembly Required (Sheena'ssembly Required) shows - wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm postconsumer:

I remember really getting into the early morning DJ team, as a pre-teen, and also staying up past my bedtime to listen to the mix DJs, late at night, on the weekends. Not to mention Dr. Demento, of course...
  3:15pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Jon, might you have used any of Johnny’s disco alter ego Rip Tide in your collage?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Mr Fab:

Holy Spicolli WR, Beefheart mentioned in a mainstream daily newspaper comic trip? As the fave of the dorky dad, no less? I guess that's progress..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Scott67:

What's a DJ?? 👍😉
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm postconsumer:

Yes! It was edited into an earlier break... If you want to hear it, it's in the first hour (this won't archive until after 2), right before the Elvis track which he initially plays at the wrong speed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Rich in Washington:

Of course, Doctor Demento was the gateway drug common to most weirdo DJs.
  3:17pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Waiting on Nancy to mention her Wild Man Fischer collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm postconsumer:

yep! The two Doctors... Demento and Fever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Scott67:

Words to live by.
Avatar 3:21pm David in California:

I remember when Dr. Demento was interviewed on NPR, and Bob Edwards couldn't believe that Dr. Demento did his show in top hat and tails.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm postconsumer:

nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Otis:

Trying to pinpoint my gateway and it was very much a variety. Early 90s start was a combo of listening to Hour of Slack and Over The Edge and just coming off San Fran Hip Hop DJs like Cameron Paul on KMEL and hearing tape dubs of NYC and LA radio (like Russ Parr in LA/Bobby Jimmy)... in High School previous totally Demento and WKRP was one of the shows on the tube with the parents watching. Lots of influences... but probably my very first was AM KFRC San Fran Bay Area DJ Dr. Don Rose.
Avatar 3:23pm cuspidor:

Did Herb Tarlek ever get on the air?
  3:25pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Just last week, my sister held a digital release party for my dad’s 1978 album “Nobody’s Dreamboat”. Finally available digitally for the first time. As part of that she found the UMatic tape of his appearance and live performance on Dr. Demento.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm postconsumer:

PDS, wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Rich in Washington:

I only discovered a couple of weeks ago that the first late night DJ which I obsessively tuned into as a teen is now doing radio again on Freeform Portland under the same handle and show title - Stranger Than Fiction with Mr. B.
So weird to hear his voice on the air again.
  3:27pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

If you’re interested, just Google “Zilch Fletcher”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Scott67:

I'm wondering if there will be anything from Pink Floyd Animal's? Pigs on the Wing maybe?🐖
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Lizardner Dave !:

"Do I hear a dog barking on that album?"
"I do".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Mr Fab:

Awesome! www.rochestercitynewspaper.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Scott67:

Spot on Lizard D!👍😎
  3:32pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

As far as my DJ inspirations, I grew up listening and interacting with radio. Making tapes of myself pretending to intro songs. When I was 10, we moved from Nashville to New Jersey. Between 1985 and 1990 I was most influenced by Kool DJ Red Alert on WRKS Kiss FM and Irwin Chusid on WFMU. Irwin’s “Atrocious Music” show made so much sense to me having grown up with my dad playing me weird and novelty records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm postconsumer:

Levels ok, out there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Scott67:

Sounds good Jon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Otis:

PDS, yes... had a couple of KISS FM tape dubs in the late 80s made by a pal who sent me stuff from NYC and would send back dubs of KMEL in San Fran. Atrocious Music, I only had tape dubs of some of the volumes Irwin put out until I could listen to Woof Moo proper in 1999 with the realaudio stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Mr Fab:

Levels are perfecto, Jon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Otis:

Sounding Solid Jon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm postconsumer:

I forgot to mention the nap I took, on our couch, while waiting for the show to start, this AM. Seemed appropriate.
  3:36pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

That and WFMU was such a breath of fresh air having come from Nashville’s heavily programmed airwaves. Freeform blew my mind. Back when WFMU was broadcasting from a college in East Orange. (It was East, right? Memories can be foggy)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm postconsumer:

Thanks guys, and thanks for all the radio influence stories!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Scott67:

I'm on the couch listening, will nap later, as I wake at 6am to catch this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm postconsumer:

:)
  3:38pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Once I was in college, I immediately signed up for a show on 88.3 FM WMTS. Wound up doing shows on there for 7 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Aitch:

Aitch, I'm up before you for a change!? I obviously didn't drink enough beer yesterday.

Re: that JR Walker track. In the beginning of the pandemic I made a pretty “Triggering” mashup about pandemic paranoia and our current 2nd amendment distopia.   3:47pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Otis, I still need to digitize so many of my old tapes. If I can find some of those Irwin episodes I’ll send em your way. Would love to hear what you have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Otis:

PDS - Atrocious and old mix tapes are long gone (what I had left was shared on the FMU blog). Lots of moving around and purges pre-2005.
Avatar 3:52pm David in California:

I can understand why DJs remember Howard Hesseman as Dr. Johnny Fever. But I also liked his performances in Dr. Detroit and in the Titan Man segment of Amazon Women of the Moon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Mr Fab:

I heard Irwin when he did some special fill-ins on an LA station in the '90s. I was instantly a fan and like Otis, i jumped on the FMU 'net stream in '99, when the classic "Incorrect Music" show was just hitting. So alas I never heard the "Atrocious" show. I wonder if tapes exist somewhere? Someone digitize 'em pleeze!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Otis:

Irwin may have them still, I had 4 or 5 volumes from tape trading days in the mid-90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Otis:

RealAudio 32k stream in 1999... I do have real fond memories of being able to experience radio from distant places. Right up there with nostalgia for trading tapes.
Avatar 3:58pm Pimpdaddysupreme:

Mr Fab, my favorite moment, which I do believe I have on tape, was Irwin playing this warbly and terribly bland woman singing just left of key and all of a sudden the record starts to speed up and swirl until the needle flies across and off the record. Background music gently fades in and Irwin says, “Even I have my limits, you know.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm postconsumer:

I still have all the tapes I got from you, Otis, from back in the day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Otis:

Wow, that's great Jon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Otis:

Pretty sure Don-O, MarkTime and SpaceBrother have tapes too as we all traded in the 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Feldy:

I'm late to the Johnny Fever party! In a meeting with Les Nessman
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm postconsumer:

Welcome, Feldy!
  4:03pm Senor Headache:

This is a truly brilliant concept/show, Jon and Mr. Fab, it warms the heart. Thank you so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm postconsumer:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm postconsumer:

This cover was new to me - I really like it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm postconsumer:

Its almost shoe-gazey...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Otis:

Don't know this one, nice cover and cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Mr Fab:

Yeah, new to me too. Johnny Fever was pretty hip, diggin the crates for the deep cuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm postconsumer:

Ha, tricked you! This is one of the tracks I chose. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm postconsumer:

But it was new to me. Found it searching for songs released before 1982...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Mr Fab:

Ha, i see what you did there Jon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm postconsumer:

(beaming)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm postconsumer:

This and his intro for Prince are my favorite parts...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm postconsumer:

it was a fun music history lesson for me, to see the same years a lot of this music was released...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Otis:

Never did have this Cars album on vinyl. Cassette in the back pocket, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Scott67:

This Album Cover always perplexed me. She has a big smile, but looks like she's about to smash through the windscreen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Otis:

Nah Scott, she's just pulling up to Trash Cult and excited to see so many pals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm postconsumer:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Scott67:

You are sweet Otis!
👍😎🍻🍁❤
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Otis:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm postconsumer:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm postconsumer:

Hi, Candy-O'67, thanks for tuning in! Fab's given me three hours to honor the late, great Johnny Fever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Candy-O'67:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Mr Fab:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Otis:

Flashbacks of middle school music jams.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Candy-O'67:

Hey Scotty-O, cobber!
  4:44pm Andres:

Hi, Mr Fab + Jon! Sorry i'm late but so happy to have this tribute to Howard Hesseman! As a kid I watched WKRP in syndication and absolutely loved the comedy and the music. It is mind-blowing that he and Tim Reid picked the music they played. Unimaginable today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm postconsumer:

Thanks, Andres!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Otis:

A real fun show today Jon. Brought back some sweet memories. Thanks pal.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Aitch:

just dropped kid to school, first day of her last year at high school.
Oddly the music playing sounds like my last year of high school, cough 40 years ago...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Candy-O'67:

Thanks so much, Jon! Looking forward to catching the whole show in the archives! What a great tribute!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm postconsumer:

  4:59pm Andres:

Go Bengals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Mr Fab:

Dr Johnny Fever, signing off…

Great job, Jon.
  5:00pm Creebie:

I guess 17 minutes of Floyd’s Dogs wouldn’t make sense within this context but loved that scene with Johnny and Mr. Carlson, so a little disappointed it wasn’t in the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm postconsumer:

There were some cuts which had to be made, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Mr Fab:

Archive up within a few hours usually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm postconsumer:

Thanks, Mr. Fab! And thanks for giving me the slot today.
  5:10pm Creebie:

Don't get me wrong, it was a great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm WR:
