  1:09pm
Morgan:

that opening was very Bronski Beat
  1:10pm
Listener Robert:

D'Gari is sold in groceries that cater to Hispanic or sometimes India-Indian clienteles. Lots of good flavors, and some are to be made with milk. Sweetened by a combination of sugar, sucralose, and acesulfame, so it's reduced-calorie but not diabetic-safe.

This one's peach-flavored D'Gari gelatine, to which I added pre-boiled (to kill the enzymes) pineapple, blueberries, Cuties mandarin oranges, banana, and Bartlett pear.

Marshmallow's a little tricky to add to D'Gari, since the instructions call for dissolving it all in boiling water, the way caterers make jelled desserts, rather than the Jell-o/Royal/Ko-Jel method of half boiling water, then cold water. So if I wanted to add miniature marshmallows, I'd have to wait long enough for it to not be hot enough to melt them.

Next to D'Gari, Royal has the best flavors, and they come in either sugar or artificially sweetened, though stores stock less variety of the latter. Jell-o may be the concept leader, but they've been left behind flavorwise.

Listener Robert:

Morgan, do you mean those ones they might call "pudding" but come as gels in 6-packs of cups? They're jelled not with gelatine but with carageenan, and they're tastier than any of the gelatine ones, but really expensive.
  1:22pm
Listener Robert:

They might be expensive because they're Hindu-compliant, and I think they're vegan. Actually for all I know even gelatines that come pre-made in individual serving cups like that might be just as expensive.
  1:22pm
Morgan:

If you want to make our own plant-based jelled dessert, unfortunately carageenan is a little demanding in terms of its electrolyte requirements to jell, compared to gelatine. I don't even know if they retail a "kit" for that.

"History
In the 1940s and 1950s, meteorologists at the Bergen School of Meteorology began informally calling some storms that grew over the sea "bombs" because they developed with a great ferocity rarely seen over land.[5]

By the 1970s, the terms "explosive cyclogenesis" and even "meteorological bombs" were being used by MIT professor Fred Sanders (building on work from the 1950s by Tor Bergeron), who brought the term into common usage in a 1980 article in the Monthly Weather Review.[5][10] In 1980, Sanders and his colleague John Gyakum defined a "bomb" as an extratropical cyclone that deepens by at least (24 sin φ/ sin 60°)mb in 24 hours, where φ represents latitude. This is based on the definition, standardised by Bergeron, for explosive development of a cyclone at 60°N as deepening by 24 mb in 24 hours.[15] Sanders and Gyakum noted that an equivalent intensification is dependent on latitude: at the poles this would be a drop in pressure of 28 mb/24 hours, while at 25 degrees latitude it would be only 12 mb/24 hours. All these rates qualify for what Sanders and Gyakum called "1 bergeron".[10][12]"

I always thought it funny there'd be mock apple pie, considering apples were so cheap. I figured it was a novelty, done for the sake of doing it, look how apples can be simulated at only double the cost. But have you seen how apple prices have gone in recent years? Mock apple starts to look reasonable!

Loved Talk Talk. John Allen did a nice tribute when Mark Hollis passed away.
