On the subway, you can ignore the cold outside

Holà David y viajeros!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Handy Haversack:

David and all the Voyageurs! Glad to join you here in the underworld!

Locally, the god of passage underground is Mt'a, the Silver Worm. I am once again propitiating this god and crossing under the river to your insular city of the Manhattoes, girdled round by wharves like Indian isles by coral reefs. Greetings from there!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Phillippe:

Brazil/Brasil for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm David Dichelle:

Greetings Diana, Phillippe, Michael, Yvang, Handy!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Michael 98145:

@Diana, what are you teaching?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Handy Haversack:

Random Road Random Guess: Togo! I'll take it Togo!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Yvang:

Way Togo, Handy!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

Hey, sorry for being a bit tardy. Gonna be hanging back this time in chat, v busy at work.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Diana in Hungary:

Michael 98145: I teach English and Civilization (American and British) at a high school in Szolnok, Hungary.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Michael 98145:

great respect here for teachers !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, 3M!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Michael 98145:

must be an interesting time to explain the US of A
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

Putting in my usuals for Estonia, Chad, Paraguay, Bhutan, and Turks & Caicos.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Webhamster Henry:

Greets to Esperantoland!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

@HH they are making you go in today?
Avatar 12:09pm David in California:

Hello, David. I'm hoping that today's Random Road selections will come from the land of my Conehead ancestors, France.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

My victory for the day: Transferred my HSBC banking app from my old phone to my new phone without actually having to call the barely-sentient carbon based life forms at HSBC.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Diana in Hungary:

Yes, and it's an interesting time to explain anything at all... there's a kind of multiplex existentialism going on here.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

Had issues getting out of bed today so no shower, but I just brewed up a pot of Yerba Mate -- that stuff is rocket fuel. Back to work!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm David (in London):

Afternoon David and all travelling groovers.
I'm in with the winning ticket of Uruguay, as usual.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Diana in Hungary:

I'm going to guess Turkey today.
Avatar 12:13pm David in California:

David in London, you go Uruguay, and I'll go mine.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Handy Haversack:

3Moons, yup, in the office. It's good to be moving around again, if the subway is a little nervous-making sometimes.

Evening, David. I am discovering that David Keenan novels are hard to find in this benighted country for some reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm David Dichelle:

Hello Henry, David, and David!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm WR:

Random road guess: USA.

Hello David and drummer streamers. Busy day, hope I don't have to be present to win.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm David (in London):

David in CA, gag of the day sir. You win first prize, a pack of Jammie Dodgers.

Handles, hello! Well, I can post something to you if you're struggling to get hold of something in particular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm coelacanth∅:

greetings David, subterranean Freedom riders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm David Dichelle:

Hey WR - it is registered in indelible ink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm David Dichelle:

And salutations, Coel!
  12:18pm headcleaner:

fine language our angelsächsisch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm David Dichelle:

Headcleaner - yes that and nichtangel-sächsisch of course.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Phillippe:

Hey coel, Handy, DiL, others!
Avatar 🚂 12:21pm Hubig Pie:

If you tried to 'splain "multiplex existentialism" after we spent the morning smoking weed in the parking lot when I was in High School, you would have been met with blank stares.
...and hello everyone
Avatar 12:23pm David in California:

David in London, thank you. Jammie Dodgers sound like something I'd like. The only biscuits I can find here are McVities Chocolate Digestives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David Dichelle:

Hello Hubig, was that a common parking lot topic?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm David (in London):

"And as she stood gazing over her fruit,
Her beauty he chanced for to spy,
Oh ! what shall I give you my pretty fair maid,
One night by your side for to lay"

Fruity in every sense.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm David (in London):

Phillippe, Hubig, yo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm David Dichelle:

Yes, this basically the grape version of the butcher song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm coelacanth∅:

aloha Phillippe, Hubig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm coelacanth∅:

'evening David (iL)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Michael 98145:

And clapped her hands on the cellar door and said it was none the worse
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm David (in London):

Islington is right outside my front door, so I might nip out and see if I can proposition a passing fruit wench. Be right back.

YoCoela.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Handy!
Avatar 🚂 12:29pm Hubig Pie:

DiL, it was more of the sex and drugs and rock and roll type banter. My post was inspired by a comment from Diana in Hungary. And greets C-lo, Handy
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Michael 98145:

don't fail to pay the rent
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Handy Haversack:

I'll have a quince if there are any extra, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm ChukAmok:

Good afternoon fellow passengers! I have a tofu bánh mì, a new desk chair, and am clearing my mind to put today's guess on...Finland!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Handy Haversack:

Play them ten at a time, overlapped and possibly backward. Kenzo can offer pointers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm coelacanth∅:

you could play them all simultaneously
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm melinda:

hi friends
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm David (in London):

I'm back. Stood on the doorstep for ages, but no passing fruit wenches at all Another bitter disappointment of the 21st century. Sorry Handy, no quince for you. I'll got an old kiwi fruit you can have though.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Handy Haversack:

I think I rolled up the  Åland Islands once and hedged my bet against their being too small. I'd love to go there one day. Swedish speaking but ceded to Finland after WWI. All connected by ferries and boats with bike trails everywhere. I'd even learn how to ride a bike.

And I could get my own damn quince!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Brian in UK:

Hello David & pop pickers everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm David Dichelle:

Good (after-)afternoon, ChukAmok and Melinda and Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm David Dichelle:

Coel: All together and at 10x the speed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm coelacanth∅:

ha -Handy
...though i was thinking more of a version of the beatles "white album" with all songs played at once (so it's 8.22) ...not commercially available and i forgot who made it
...though i was doing what Kenzo does several decades ago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm ChukAmok:

@Handy Åland Islands has my favorite flag of any of the Scandinavian countries.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Brian in UK:

Handy, you will need a runcible spoon.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm David (in London):

Hi Brian. What news from Salop?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm coelacanth∅:

hey ChukA and melinda
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Webhamster Henry:

@DD: Sometime you should dip into Mika Pohjola's Swedish/Finnish Moomintroll songs and other work with Johanna Grüssner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm David Dichelle:

Thanks and noted, Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm coelacanth∅:

hey Brian (iUK)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Webhamster Henry:

You could do a beat matched super Roud mashup. Kind of like Hooked On Classics, but for Roud tunes.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Brian in UK:

David, a delightfully warm day here in Salop. Some digging & prepping fence posts.

Hello coelacanth∅
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm ChukAmok:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm David Dichelle:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Michael 98145:

Nice word. Cameroonian.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm David Dichelle:

The weather here is just like the picture at the top of the page.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Handy Haversack:

I was vaccinated long since, Stanley, having grown up in the American south and with commercial radio.

Ha, totally, Brian!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Phillippe:

-40 F and -40 C are the exact same actual temperature. Just in case you were wondering
Avatar 🚂 1:05pm TDK60:

Poor Stanley. I was there when the incident occurred. I was too busy to posit the same ol' tired trope/reminder that Miller's first five or so albums were actually good. (You might not agree with that either.) But I was busy and thought there are more important issues concerning the playing of recordings via radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Little Danny:

hello david, hello all
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Michael 98145:

Take that photo and make it so foggy you can't see the trees, and that is our weather today
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Michael 98145:

so, happy to be here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Danny!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Stanley:

Haha TDK. And I like your restraint.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm ChukAmok:

@Michael98145 Ooh, I love a good fog.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David (in London):

TDK, I saw Steve Miller about four years ago supporting John Fogerty, and he was bloody brilliant. As was Fog.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Stanley:

These black wolves are running along very nicely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm David Dichelle:

Happy to have you here, Michael!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Handy Haversack:

At Cafe Oto, David?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Phillippe:

I'm at the age and point in life where I just yell at people to get their record off my lawn when they play something I don't like.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Carmichael:

Finally made it ... WAIT! Where's the train?!?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Phillippe:

sank in that puddle, Carm
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm David (in London):

Handy, Steve Miller...Chris Forsyth...ever seen them together, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm David Dichelle:

Over here, Carmichael!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Little Danny:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Stanley:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Diana Senechal:

Oooh, "O Canal" is another favorite today.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Webhamster Henry:

On the Subway, you'd only hear the Czech covers of Steve Miller tunes.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Carmichael:

Some people call Stanley Maurice.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Phillippe:

Talk about 2 guys you never see in the same room: Stephen Breyer (American Supreme Court Justice) and Ben Roethlisberger (American football thug and knucklehead) both retired on the same day. Coincidence?
Avatar 🚂 1:19pm Bas NL:

Hi David & all! And before i forget: Somalia!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Handy Haversack:

Do David's mic levels seem low compared to the music to anyone else? At work, so the speaker set-up is not ideal.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Stanley:

Carmichael -
If the nightingales could sing like you, They'd sing much sweeter than they do
Avatar 🚂 1:20pm TDK60:

Oh darn, Suriname.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm David (in London):

Carmichael, I've always referred to Stanley as the Gangster of Love.
Avatar 🚂 1:21pm Bas NL:

Missed Altın Gün ... i'll visit the archives.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Stanley:

Aargh! My secret is out
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Handy Haversack:

Why has no one mashed up Steve, Glenn, and Roger Miller? Or has someone done it but Ken won't share it with us?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Diana in Hungary!:

Happy fifth anniversary! Here's to many more years!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Webhamster Henry:

Happy Anniversary to the Subway!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Handy Haversack:

Happy anniversary, David! Finding this show last year after you and Julie moved days is one of my personal highlights of the past couple of years! So glad to travel with you and all the Voyageurs every week. Anniversary present is on the way as soon as it's live-pressed to vinyl next month.
Avatar 🚂 1:26pm TDK60:

I just researched; David, on your debut show, you played Brand New Cadillac by the Clash. Your first few commenters were Webhamster Henry, Brian in UK, Uncle Michael and listener james from westwood. Factiness.

Just got a MS for production work that might be interesting to this crowd: Radio for the Millions: Hindi-Urdu Broadcasting Across Borders.

It's happened, ChukAmok! Maybe two times with no hint from David? And a couple of times when more than one person guessed right with hints.

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Stanley:

TDK - I was indeed and used the flat in the East End for my launching/returning pad for travels abroad. Work a year, go abroad six-twelve months x 3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm ChukAmok:

60:min tapes were the hardest to make mixes on. No room at all for non-essential tunes, forcing the mixer into a flow only breakable by the changing-over of the sides. It's shorter length made for a sturdier stock of magnetic tape as well.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

oooh, I wonder if those Mombasa Vikings were actually affiliated with the wide-roaming Scandinavians in some way?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

ChukAmok: I hear ya. 60 was a chat, 90 was a conversation, and 120 was like staying up too late talking with someone because you just cant stop
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Handy Haversack:

I keep an emergency back-up cassette deck in the office. Along with the emergency back-up VCR (which actually needs to rise to the occasion along about now).

I catalogued my cassettes last week and noted the evidence of high-school obsessiveness as I timed and recorded the track lengths of dubbed albums for putting songs on mixes!
Avatar 🚂 2:22pm TDK60:

Chuk, yes you could/can go into more depth with a 90-minute mix tape. Making a 60 min. mix takes great editing skill. Yeah, I think 60s give better audio, being shorter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm ChukAmok:

That's a great way of putting it Baba Bee.
I have always thought of mixes (specifically tapes) as an important form of correspondence between two people, or from one person to many.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm ChukAmok:

"emergency back-up cassette deck"
I love it, Handy!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Handy ain't called Handy for no reason!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm ChukAmok:

Some of my favorite mixes were also the shortest, or rather had the shortest playlist.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Handy Haversack:

I liked to name the sides of mix tapes and theme to that name. I relearned this about myself last week!
Avatar 🚂 2:25pm Will in Norman:

I'm an audio archivist; the office I'm in right now has 3 cassette decks and 3 reel-to-reel decks (minus the several inoperable decks that are hiding in various corners cause I don't know what to do with them)
Avatar 🚂 2:26pm TDK60:

Chuck, some 90 min tapes can feel a bit too much if packed in there in overambitious exuberance.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Bless you, Will in Norman! It's a valuable service!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 🚂 2:27pm Will in Norman:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm David Dichelle:

Hey Will, do you still use the old school equipment there?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Phillippe:

I found an old Sanyo stereo at a thrift store I bought just for the dual tape deck. Got home and discovered our 200 or so cassettes got lost in the move
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

I never did adapt to CD mixes. Couldn't control the segues properly
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Michael 98145:

@Will, sounds like a great job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm ChukAmok:

@TDK60 Agreed in full.
Since getting back into community radio and filling in from time to time the show I am still the proudest of is the one where I played a total of six tracks over the course of a two hour show. Still, there's always something new to say, and room for improvement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm David Dichelle:

That is maddening, Phillippe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm ChukAmok:

Hi Phillippe! That is a tragedy! :(
Avatar 🚂 2:29pm Will in Norman:

@David
yeah, to digitize recordings made on those formats. Next month I'll be starting on a few reel to reel tapes we got from a Cherokee vietnam vet
Avatar 🚂 2:30pm TDK60:

Will, any spare reel to reels that still work? / A pal made me a pile of CD-R mixes about 5 years ago. About half no longer work, while I still have tapes from 20 - 30 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm David Dichelle:

Truly fascinating work, Will!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Will, that sounds like fascinating work
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Phillippe:

Two of them were music from our wedding...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Handy Haversack:

Ack, Phillippe!

When K8 and I were first together but she hadn't finished grad school and moved here, she came to visit. She was so excited that she left her car unlocked with a bike on the back seat. In pre-gentrified Greenpoint, this was a bad idea. And then whoever took the bike made off with all her cassettes, too! All the HS mixes, everything!

I think I made only one mix CD -- for K8!
Avatar 🚂 2:30pm Will in Norman:

& we recently got a couple of shoebox's worth of instructional tapes for various languages that we're probably gonna digitize soon with the help of an intern
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:31pm chris in the redwoods:

Here in the museum of busted audio equipment I do have the proper means for cassettes and disks and DATs and PXL2000, the open reel is in storage. and the victrola is out on vacation, but I have some 4 track Portastudio style tapes that I can't really play any more
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Michael 98145:

sadly, pilfered tapes wind up in landfills.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:34pm chresti:

90 minutes was the size I'd use, but now I would use 60 in TDK's honor.

Oh no Phillippe!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Michael 98145:

as will ours
Avatar 🚂 2:34pm Will in Norman:

@tdk60
Recorded media shelflife can be surprisingly variable. A lot of it depends on the climate they were kept in. High heat & humidity is generally bad for both CD-Rs & tapes alike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm ChukAmok:

@Handy Reading that broke my heart. All those carefully handmade, irreplaceable treasures...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Phillippe:

Yeah it was a bummer. The good news is I listen to FMU non-stop so I never would've listened to most of them again anyway...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

WHH, digging that inventory. My situation is a bit pathetic, now that my CD player is dead, and no cassette player. Got a turntable and a couple of hand-cranked (cabinet and portable)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Michael 98145:

cool! hand-cranked?!? whoaa.
Avatar 🚂 2:35pm Will in Norman:

In my experience with the right knowledge, patience, and maintenance almost any analog magnetic tape is recoverable, whereas with damaged digital formats it's not as frequently the case
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

plus, of course, the internet, which is always tuned to WFMU (my radio is always tuned to local 89.5 KPOO)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm ChukAmok:

This Nation of Ulysses lyric has always been a favorite:
"Gonna make a tape for you
Well 90 minutes is all the time it takes to make you mine
90 minutes is all the time
Don't press rewind
We're gonna rise"
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm chris in the redwoods:

i've been watching Archive81. i feel like an expert on the magnetic tape thing now. (hahahaha)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Michael 98145:

i need to acquire a way to play the few 78s we have
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Handy Haversack:

Baba Bee, we had gone through two nonfunctional thrift-store CD players before we remembered: DVD players also play CDs!

If David will forgive the crass commercialism, the gift I'm sending him is a unique, live-recorded 45 from K8 and Creek and Kills. The recording session with a lathe press is next month, and you can preorder any C&K song (I think they might pare down the list after this week). The band is donating their share of the proceeds to the National Network of Abortion Funds. Info and URL are in my profile. In case anyone's looking for unique (and personalized!) live 45s!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Michael 98145: yeah, some 78s are made for electric turntables and some aren't, so ya gotta be careful!
Avatar 🚂 2:39pm TDK60:

Gosh chresti, but actually I did make more 90 than 60 m. tapes. I don't record many albums or mixes on tape anymore. I have tapes on hand for shows on radio stations that are rare or unsual. (A lot are non-WFMU as we have archives.) But, I was kidding with DJ Tony Coulter I should tape his "Tape Hiss" shows as they're not archived.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Michael 98145:

@Handy, i think that is -such- a great idea
