January 24, 2022: Interview with Karina Gill
Olivia welcomes Karina Gill (of Cindy and Flowertown) for a quick conversation about how "being good at things" in the conventional way can get in the way, how special a community can be for music, and how making music isn't rocket science - in fact, some of the best music is the simplest.

Listener comments!
Hi, Olivia and Olivians!
Also, what pizza place do you recommend? My friend in Davis still hasn't found one he likes.
This is Blondie as in Debbie Harry, Clem Burke, Chris Stein Blondie?
I'm in Sacramento. The 2 standouts are Wenelli's and Mark & Monica's. Nothing else sizes up.
Also, if you're from the east coast, pizza out here is much different. Medium thick crust and LOTS of toppings. Have I mentioned the pineapple?
1. Pineapple
2. Ranch dressing
(Doommaedel, how’s the sky this Scottish eve?)
Are you also in California?
how's the little monster?
I also strongly disapprove of floppy crusts. But I am a fan of the fold and eat with your head tilted sideways.
I can't endorse that cracker-crust Chicago-style pizza, I'm afraid.
The little monsters are all fine.
Naples > NJ > Chicago > NYC > anything else
marie: Exactly!
Handy: I'll still be your friend :-)
we love the stuffed pizzas from Zachary's in the east bay over here. stuffed spinach and mushroom? yes, please! :)
Michael: Oh yeah the pizza in Rome is fantastic! There are a few Roman-style places in Chicago that I love (Pizza Metro, Bonci).
When you say "sticks", do you mean Winters or that area? Or "sticks" like Ione or Jackson?
karlward, I will hold you to it!
didn't taste a tavern pizza 'till i started hanging out with the hoodlums when i was ~15.
that was nj, and the pizza was excellent.
Then…possibly in the 1970s…pizza-makers on Long Island, as the story goes, started getting nostalgic. They longed for that simple home pie that their mothers or grandmothers had made. By all accounts, they started making, for themselves, a rectangular pie…that was much thinner than the standard Noo Yawk Sicilian pie. The tomatoes on it were fresher, sometimes raw, and the cheese was lighter. Someone started calling this neo-pie "Grandma Pizza," after its origins in the Old Country--and it lay dormant among the pizza-making domestic cells of Long Island for a good ten years.
I have met Chris (in the redwoods) in real life and can attest to his physical reality and extreme coolness and niceness.
Handy, you are too kind and backatcha! :)
and it was delicious.
and the garlic knots looked amazing, and i don't give a crap about garlic knots... so i asked about them and he gave me 4 complimentary.
i will have those again.
...i had pretty bad pizza at 2 different ray's pizzas in nyc, back in the day. if there was one ray's pizza that was good, i never found it.
i walked there a few times and never wanted to wait on the very long line.
I get down there kind of often under normal circumstances, ChukAmok. We use Fulton St. as the place where we leave the damn system and walk over to Atlantic Ave. to access all the OTHER trains.
YB, it is such a plan! It is so on that it is very much like Donkey Kong!
RIBBET…RIBBET
ChukAmok, I usually walk down St. Felix, but I'll deviate next time!
poetry readings? nope. karaoke? nope.
Son of Pantz: Probably Kraken? But Perdido Street Station is so great that I can't not mention it.
One of my good friends has a rule with his partner: no one mentions pizza unless they are prepared to eat pizza immediately afterward!
There's a lot of anticapitalism in PSS and The Scar and Iron Council. Maybe too much for TV, and I don't think CM would allow the story to be made without that being foregrounded.
You may be be right about The Scar and Iron Council but Kraken and City and the City would be easy to transform into a series.
Wow! I thought he was Welsh, too! Those books were SUPER formative for me as a kid!
agreed, HyperDose :~)
...maybe on the walls?
they got multiple fractures long before they could've been worth something.
@handy
i am sad. thank you for your support. missed most of the show.
pulling for the Bengals @son!!
@ken that's what happens when you kick it through the endzone and play prevent defense against the best QB / WR / TE with 3 time outs :(
@phillippe i am somewhat consoled by the fact that my crushing disappointment came as a result of a literally all time great NFL game
thx @carmichael
didnt mean to takeover the chat! but it was the event of the evening...
Had to do a chore - nice to be back - glad there's still some Ravioli still warm even...
"Everyone saw the same act that I saw, but then nobody saw it the same way I saw. In my mind this was the genius spoof of Bruce Springsteen that the world so desperately needed. The hyperbolic lyrics about motorcycles & switchblades, the simple triads of the music, the melodrama, the mysterious Svengali at the piano, all fronted not by a hunky denim clad stud but a 250-pound wild man whose head might explode any second. I was sold." Todd Rundgren from the book "The Individualist"
oh well.
i don't like a lot of Springsteen's music -because of arrangement, not composition... but i think he's a stand-up guy
Absolute smasherator of a show, Olivia! A great interview, great tunes, the total package. I guess there could have been more pizza, but even radio has its limitations. Many thanks!
Stay hungry, Pizza Pasta Pocket People!
Yeah for having such a champion of Garage like LittleSteven in the band & such a celebrated hot band - a more direct kinda recording shouldn't have been so hard to arrive @. But the target was the Charts & the mainstream...
sparse.
take care, everyone!
