Good morning everyone! Thanks for braving the Hudson winds to bring us these tunes, Tom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Handy Haversack:

luka, I was thinking about your dice still being in Chicago, which reminded me of the last time I was there. A friend who has moved to Cali was working there for a few weeks, so another friend and I flew out from NYC for a long weekend. We decided that a good way to see more of the town than just downtown was to find a gaming store and take public transport out to it. So two El lines and a bus got us to a pretty nice, active gaming store somewhere on the North Side, past Wrigley. We got some dice, chatted with the staff, and eventually asked if there was a decent bar nearby. They gave us directions, we walked over there, and had a super fun afternoon at a gay sports bar on a college football Saturday. Really nice day on the town!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am sphere:

not sure about the diagnosis but that's what someone on FB said.
Avatar 9:27am Rev. Turnip Druid:

@sphere - wasn't familiar with the name at first, but he goes back to Peach of Immortality, so that's some heritage, there. Alas..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am sphere:

If you're interested, there's a fair amount of Peach on his Karl Schmidt Verlag Bandcamp page and on Soundcloud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Handy Haversack:

A couple of listeners came onto Fabio's board yesterday to announce that, sphere, and I have to admit not knowing who Tom Smith was nor about Peach of Immortality (though, lest we forget, I'm an idiot).

  9:32am rx scabin:

Good morning everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am sphere:

@ Handy - Peach of Immortality was basically the only DC noise act during most of the 80s. Of course they were associated with the infamous Pussy Galore (who started in DC before moving to NYC).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Handy Haversack:

Ah, OK. Thanks, sphere. You'd think these two cities were actually far from each other or something!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am sphere:

This was outside the Dischord/Simple Machines/Teen Beat regime so they never had much press.
Avatar 9:34am Rev. Turnip Druid:

for 80s DC there was the Peach camp and the New Carrollton camp, plus a number of lesser bedroom noise projects (cough).. frankly it was hard to plant a flag in that town if you weren't a Dischord emo-core zombie.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:35am karlward:

Now we are all emo-core zombies though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am sphere:

@ RTD - Absolutely. I got reamed in the City Paper for criticizing the Make-Up.

@sphere - I am chuckling at your Discord anecdotes because a couple of my old bands opened for some of those bands way back when, and it seemed like every single time something awkward happened at some point in the night that had us scratching our heads like "what did we say?". I always just chalked it up to cultural differences between Midwesterners and folks from the DC area but maybe they were just uptight about their bidness.

Yeah, TomDash. Their mother and my dad were cousins. When my dad was orphaned, her parents took him in for a while. Sent him to college for three years, but it was the Depression, and they could afford to send only her. But he and my "aunt" remained close all their lives even though they rarely lived close to each other. I went to visit her in Marin Co. in the early nineties and met Peter while I was there. She was a very, very interesting person and extremely kind to me all my life.

Heard an uplifting discussion last night posted by Haymarket Books on YouTube, between authors Robin Kelley (whose Life and Times of Thelonious Monk I’m currently reading) and David Palumbo-Liu about his latest book, “Speaking Out of Place: a conversation on reclaiming our political voices.” Great historical anecdotes of sensing the moment when nothing but acts of courage and compassion will do.

Oh yeah, glad you dug Woolin.
Chris Hedges has long been one of his biggest proponents, which is how I was introduced to him. I think his assessment of the current situation in America of what he calls a “corporate coup d’etat” as part of his Inverted Totalitarianism theory is the most accurate I’ve heard yet.
Hedges is a rarified journalist par excellence who’s exhibited in droves the requisite fearlessness to speak real truth to power.

Unfortunately, that's about all I know from that period of his life. He then ended up in Key West but was back on the West Coast, in San Fran, by the 1940s. That's where he was friends with Louis Armstrong and Billie Holliday and gave her his stash of pot to hang onto when he was drafted only find after he failed the physical that it was all gone ...

He was a scenester. But mainly dabbled in both politics and art. Did some arranging, some poems, some stories, some paintings. But mainly waited tables and was on the scene.

Back in the Village by the fifties. Met my mom in '59 at Minetta's Tavern on Macdougall.

Hey folks, thanks for hanging! Sorry, been a bit quiet this week on the old board...always busy figuring out what to play next! ha...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am YETI BOB:

thanks Chuk, my Swedish is a little weak and I mistook it for a plural
  11:24am don_laine:

Tom, my comment about missing jazz was less an indictment of your set and more an indictment of the station as a whole. It seems that with each changing of the schedule we lose more DJs who play jazz regularly. I love your show, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am YETI BOB:

Chuk: Now can you please translate "Pärson Sound" ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Handy Haversack:

I think the Drummer stream tends to feature more jazz-centric shows, though there are also a lot fewer shows so maybe the proportion just sticks out more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@don - are you among us on the Drummer stream on Sunday for destination Out! & the Stork Club ?

I admit, I mostly listen during the day while I am at work painting houses, and mostly just to the main stream. But these are excellent suggestions and I will check out the shows you all have mentioned. Thank you for putting up with my entitled millenial whining, its endemic in my generation.
Swag For Life Member 11:34am Zinn The Mood:

New book on HST by Peter Richardson looks really good.
It’s sort of reclamation of his genius and political prescience after decades during which his outsized reputation in mainstream circles for drug-crazed cavorting and outlandish antics took up all the air in the room.
Some really good interviews with and essays by the author at his website: peterrichardson.blogspot.com...

I agree with the others, Handy. There’s some vignettes in there about your Dad and his times that would be interesting to flesh out.

Speaking of the Village of those days, and then walking it these, is as disorienting as being dropped in from another planet.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 11:35am ChukAmok:

@Yeti Bob when you see -en at the end of a Swedish word it means "the".
That is just "Person Sound".

Thompson's hijinx also self-mythologized - as he mythologized everything. A specifically Post-Kerouac artist in many respects. How is HST not obviously both one of the best & the most relevant Writers of the Time ?

Swag For Life Member 11:52am Zinn The Mood:

Thanks, Jonny…though I have to confess it pains me to send any click traffic, commercial or otherwise, Amazon’s way. Will have to look into it.
Have to admit the latest book I read on him I enjoyed immensely was E. Jean Carroll’s. Was at an amazing, off-the-beaten path, used bookstore (housed in a refurbished barn) deep in the woods (literally) upstate NY and found a few. Looked pretty salacious at first and was headstand for that reason. But did a surprisingly good job filling in some of the details of his personal relationships throughout his life.

Agreed, RevRab. Mark Twain-esque often, in his defense of the maligned and disgust with dishonest brokers and corrupt politicians.
I also agree with Richardson that most often it’s his letters that I find most hilarious and insightful. Was once reading The Proud Highway in a cafe during lunch laughing out loud every now and then when a woman nearby cracked a smile and asked what I was reading, saying that she needed something to do the same for her. Wasn’t sure if she’d get the same belly laughs I was from reading his famously precise descriptions of what he planned to do to unscrupulous editors, profiteers and the like.

You say bowling and I immediately conjure images of Schlitz on tap, Lucky Strike cigarettes and jars of pickled eggs. That kinda bowling. Enjoyed the last bit of the show
