@davefromtoronto you’re right, though I can’t put my finger on what makes it so.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm The Count of Al Dente:

RE: the Giant. It may be because he sounds kind of oafish, which means he could be mentally unstable and ready to eat whatever he encounters.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:13pm ike̶̬̕:

This is great music for yelling at filthy hippies. Or spontaneously going through a Kafka-esque transformation into a filthy hippie and then hating yourself, and yelling at squares and also yourself. Or yelling at potatoes.

4:45pm listener phillip (in the bronx):

It's really really creepy to know ppl can spy on you that way.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:46pm chresti:

Anyone who has a Roman nose and elects to get a nose job is committing a crime.
  4:48pm WM:

The Conversation (1974) is a good film, but it is only fair to note that the film is highly derivative of Antonioni's Blow Up (1967). The similarities are so great (even to the point of both films beginning with mimes) that The Conversation is a virtual remake of Blow Up.
4:48pm listener phillip (in the bronx):

Not many movies give me the "willies" but this one does and that 2002 film "the ring"
🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Bruce S.:

The Great John Cazale was also in the Conversation, he died way too young

  4:50pm davefromtoronto:

the ring - you mean the japanese or the remake? i saw the remake and loved it! super scary.
🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Bruce S.:

Blow up, the Conversation, and Blow Out are similiarly themed, but tottaly different Movies, not remakes
  4:52pm davefromtoronto:

oh yeah blow out! oops #embarrassed
4:52pm listener phillip (in the bronx):

@davefromtoronto the japanese version "ringu," has more of a plot & script than the 2002 american version "the ring"

  4:56pm WM:

Thanks for mentioning the Bresson films. He is my favorite director. A Man Escapes is a nearly perfect film. I keep searching for The Devil, Probably (1977). I saw it a long time ago and want to see it again. Please note that, last time I looked, Bresson's very first film Angels of Sin (1943) is available on YouTube.

Avatar 4:58pm Fabio:

@ WM: Yes, it's true about the Conversation Vs. Blow up. But it doesn't matter. They are both excellent movies and Coppola to his credit doesn't just ape whatever Antonioni did but takes it to another place. yes, many similarities, but also many unique qualities.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Handy Haversack:

Nice tunage today
🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Bruce S.:

awesome set Fabs!
  5:05pm WM:

To go back to the beginning, Antonioni's Blow Up is based on a story by Julio Cortazar. I think the film is actually better than the story - one of the few examples of a film surpassing its literary source. Coppola's film is skillful but not original and DePalma's film is just a weak rehash of both.
Avatar 🎸 5:07pm TDK60:

Hey Fabs; I see that it's Fellini's birthday, 1920.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Handy Haversack:

And we're not even discussing Death Blow. But the Death Blow, Jerry -- the Death Blow!
🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Bruce S.:

Some day DePalma will get his rightful place at the table

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:11pm brainiac:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Carmichael:

Hell no, brainiac. Buy a house, sit on my ass, stare at the trees. Repeat.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:15pm brainiac:

Sounds... nice. But I would hasten to point out there are many beautiful trees up the hill, although it does get get cold sometimes.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Handy Haversack:

I only went through Flagstaff once, but I loved it on sight. Unlike all the other parts of Arizona. There *was* a blizzard on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm ChukAmok:

Flagstaff is a great town. Love the Painted Desert around it too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Jason from Houston:

My ex and I walked what seemed like forever in a blizzard, to a jazz club from our hostel... In Flagstaff. It was a great night.
Avatar 🎸 5:17pm Bas NL:

Well, that was a 8/8 clicky-star set to me. So many people making interesting music.. astounding if you think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm ChukAmok:

A friend who lives out there recently said that Flag has become very expensive though.
🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Bruce S.:

Handy I thought you were leaving for some reason, didn't mean to give you a premature Goodbye
  5:19pm WM:

Sorry, Fabio. I've got to disagree. There are sections of The Conversation that are virtual quotations from the Antonioni film. The long, curcial scene in which Hackmann isolates the key section of the tape is very similar to the scene in which David Hemmngs blows up the film. And note that in each case they are both wrong about the initial conclusion they draw from the evidence.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Carmichael:

I hear it looks a lot like Tahoe, pine trees, seasons, nature. I lived in Tucson about 30 years ago and loved it, but for different reasons. And forget Phoenix and that surrounding area.
Avatar 🎸 5:19pm TDK60:

What Fabio!, Ken doesn't have a sign taped up above the board, reminding of the Evil words?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm ChukAmok:

True. The pine trees there are amazing.

If I remember correctly, "Brekekekex Koax Koax" is a line from the Frogs by Aristophanes.
🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Bruce S.:

you're the best Fabio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm ChukAmok:

I spent several weeks painting a house in the middle of the Painted Desert outside of Flag after I repatriated to the U.S. It was exactly what I needed at the time. Very therapeutic.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Handy Haversack:

Nope, Bruce, I was just cheersing youse with this first cocktail, a Last Word.

Is Santa Fe really expensive? In the 1940s, my dad and his girlfriend drove across the country from Key West to San Fran. They reached Santa Fe, though, and my dad fell in love with it and wanted to stay. He saw a sign for "waitress wanted" on a diner and suggested they stay. His GF said, "Why do I always have to get the job?" And on they went. Soon he was friends with the jazz greats and then moved to the Village, and that was that. Yadda yadda, here's your Handy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:24pm brainiac:

I love a good origin story, Handy.

DePalma's Films are definitly Derivative,no doubt about it, but they are also fantastic popcorn movies, I always felt that I got my moneys worth at a DePalma Movie, not ashamed to say it

yes depalma had a hard to define low quality vibe to his films but that didn't matter cause they were undeniably entertaining

this mf really put out an album called flatten the curve
  5:45pm WM:

I can't agree that an imitation can be superior to the original. Most of De Palma's films are just a rehash of Hitchcock. Willful ignorance is not a valid critical perspective. I think it was G. K Chesterton who said, regarding brilliant Broadway signs "what a pleasure this must be for people who can't read." Although.... Come to think of it Hertzog's remake of Nosferatu (1979) is in many ways superior to the Murnau original of 1922. "Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds..."

throwing my lot in - i enjoyed blow out. i also felt it was inferior, but similar to hitchcock. it made me want to watch blow up (which i have yet to do).

I've seen every Hitchcock film and I think DePalma's films stand up rather well

OK... Let's go all the way... Star Wars is not only based on Hidden Fotress, but it also very obviously lifts a great deal from Jack Kirby's Fourth World comics. Kirby mentions The Source while Star Wars mentions The Force, and so on...
