It seems that Dan really doesn't like writing, if you were to go by his attitude toward it in the first several episodes.

Hahaha writing fiction is definitely more interesting than being a truck driver. In fact, I'm editing a fiction story today.

Dan's letter from the eccentric golf enthusiast is an easily overlooked, but excellent detail in this episode.

Suspense music. Johnny Moran, what's your story?

That kid will totally influence Dan in the worst way, I'm sure.

Bright and sunny music :) I'd listen to just the soundtrack of this

"Lemon Coke." That was certainly new to me, but apparently: a real drink.

Ellen Lovebug:

This show makes me miss playing clarinet.

I'm quote fond of the music in this show. It's got the right flavor for radio adventure.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Austin Rich:

Johnny seems more than willing to talk about his dead mother. Fairly well adjusted, I guess?
  6:08pm
Ellen Lovebug:

He sounds like he's looking up to Mr Halliday as another father figure

I used to know a man named John Moran, who managed the band Dance Card in Portland. I don't believe that band is around anymore, and I don't think John manages bands anymore.

Ellen Lovebug:

They could be underestimating the girl
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
Austin Rich:

I think you have some good head cannon here, Ellen. It's not explicit in this version, but I bet that Johnny seeing Dan work all the time caused him to see Dan as a hero. I'm sure the led-down here is even bigger when Dan can't come through.
  6:12pm
Ellen Lovebug:

It sounds like a frame up. This poor kid thinks he can scrounge up money for a lawyer. They're searching for more of the stolen loot they buried there, I imagine.
  6:14pm
Ellen Lovebug:

She jumped to the conclusion that Johnny had disappeared. She knew that in advance. I don't know that I trust her
  6:15pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Aha. Logical doped the coffee. I hope he can cope
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
Austin Rich:

I wonder how many times Dan get's drugged in various episodes of this show? We should keep track. It's a pretty common "noir" trope.
  6:15pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Poor Dan, he's so gullible
  6:16pm
Ellen Lovebug:

That was cute. I love Carter
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm

Carter is the best. What's not to love?
  6:18pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I'm surprised she let him live
  6:19pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Wow, sinister operation.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Austin Rich:

Clearly, she'll even mess with a child, so yeah, I'm surprised too. Maybe she thought there was enough in the coffee to kill Dan, and it didn't?
Avatar 6:20pm
HyperDose:

His vocal cadence and the timing of the music is superb. What a performance!
  6:22pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Joe Cokeley ... right track ... see what was left behind
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm
Austin Rich:

Since Box 13 wasn't live, I think they were able to get great performances. Some old radio shows have live broadcasts, so the performances can be... uneven.

However, I think Alan Ladd's performance as Dan Holiday is a little "flat." I think that was typical in the late 40's, so it's not surprising. But there's a lot of great performances in the show, so it stands out a little.
  6:22pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I think he's going for unflappable deadpan
  6:23pm
spacebrother:

Dance music.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Austin Rich:

I think you're right, Ellen. That would sort of make sense. Like a typical "tough guy" of the era.
  6:24pm
Chuck:

Digging this, Austin!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

I believe that's the same actor who plays Philip Marlowe on "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" who is playing Joe in this scene.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Austin Rich:

Gerald Mohr, I believe.
  6:25pm
Ellen Lovebug:

The final chapter... Remembering phone boxes out on the street. Life of the party. These deadpan lines. Going away together. Joe uses these girls and leaves them behind or worse
  6:27pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Yay for the set-up. He stayed so calm through all of it
Avatar 6:27pm
Mr Fab:

hey Austin! Yeah, I'd say that tracing the roots of "cool" should lead us to the hardboiled noir era. Perhaps not THE source, but one of 'em.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Austin Rich:

I like that observation, Mr. Fab. It is certainly all about "looking cool" under pressure.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Austin Rich:

Thanks, @Chuck!

Ellen Lovebug:

Good job, Johnny. "Gee whiz".

The sound on "Voyage of the Scarlet Queen" isn't so bad this week, but I did do a little clean-up on it, anyway. Sometimes he talks so fast, that even with a good recording, it's hard to make out what he's saying.
  6:32pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Ooh, an unscheduled stop. You never know what could happen.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

There is an on-going story with The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen, but for the most part, you can listen to them isolated.

Regardless, I've been trying to include plot summaries of all the shows I've been airing on my blog. So if you are curious about what has happened previously, you can find plot summaries here:

Ellen Lovebug:

So much jewelry, so much makeup. My, my. It would have been wise to bring things to trade
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Austin Rich:

I have certainly struggled with the racial language that is used in this show. Not only are there music cues that are "satire" of genuine regional music, but there are uses of ethnic slurs here and there, in addition to impersonations of people with accents done by people who are white.

These usages were wrong then, and are wrong now, too, so I don't lean on the "it was okay then" argument. That doesn't hold water. But I do find it interesting to listen to these cultural artifacts from the past, so I can confront the kinds of things I grew up thinking was normal, and try to take note of why they are not, and should not be. I have a lot of deprogramming to do, but did grow up listening to stuff like this, so I think this is a good place to confront those concerns.
  6:37pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Well-said
Avatar 6:38pm
Mr Fab:

Definitely, Austin. Our listeners are smart enough to understand the context. And it's good to see how things used to be, as a measure of our progress.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Austin Rich:

Agreed, Mr. Fab. But I think a little context for why I'm playing these helps, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Austin Rich:

If you binge "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen," there is an ASTONISHING amount of drinking in the show. If you wanted to play a drinking came, having a drink every time some in the show is drinking could be the way to a fun evening. If that's your kind of thing.
  6:44pm
spacebrother:

I have struggled with old slang and racist lyrics, but I've found people generally get it here.
Avatar 6:44pm
Mr Fab:

"There's something about dead fat people that makes them look deader than any other variety."
Avatar 6:45pm
HyperDose:

"give me a few hours" yeah, not shady at all!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Austin Rich:

Phil has suggested that, while The Scarlet Queen is well armed, for the most part, the guns are under lock and key, until Phil breaks them out for the crew to use. Phil breaks out the guns often, so they are rarely locked up when needed. But it is an interesting detail; day to day operations on the ship do not require anyone to carry a gun. Only in emergencies.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Austin Rich:

@Mr. Fab: I almost quoted that line, too.
Avatar 6:48pm
HyperDose:

Oh here we go
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Austin Rich:

@Hyperdose: There's so many shady lines all the time, it's like some sort of Drag Race on this show.
Avatar 6:49pm
HyperDose:

I noticed how the hanky panky mimics a James Bond timeline. Around 3/4 through, long enough to establish trust in his partner of the escapade.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Austin Rich:

I think you're right, HyperDose. This predates James Bond a bit, I think. (Five years I believe.) But I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a trope already by the time this was written.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Austin Rich:

I suspect that keeping the guns locked up is probably a result of practicality; most of the crew are probably not as trustworthy as the first mate, and it's probably a good idea to keep them confined to knives unless absolutely necessary.
Avatar 6:54pm
HyperDose:

Could Ian Fleming have been inspired by Dimestore Radio?!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Austin Rich:

It's very likely. I wouldn't be surprised if Ian Fleming listened to a lot of radio leading into his writing career.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:55pm

Phil certainly makes time with the same number of women as James Bond does.

This was the "Friday Night" cliffhanger, so listeners had to wait the entire weekend to hear how this turned out. For a daily show, these weekend waits were suspenseful.

I make ya'll wait a week each time, because I'm cruel, I guess?

I feel like the "human zoo" idea is a bit of a Sci-Fi trope. But I think it is pretty well executed in this version.
  7:39pm
Listener Robert:

I suspect this is a setup. One of the humans is not what s/he seems.

Wow. This is quite a plot. He's so attached to his books. Poor Grace. A lot weighing on her shoulders, rebuilding the species
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm

In print, the race is called the "Zan." I thought it was. They pronounce it more like "Zahn" in the audio adaptation, but I imagined the pronunciation more like zan.

"Academic detachment; I learned it at faculty teas" that's a fun snarky line

  7:45pm

This is a bit twisted of a plot. I find this show rather unnerving. It's rather minimalist but effective, in large part due to the suspense music

I will say now that Walter survives the torture. It didn't occur to me that I should put a torture warning on this episode, as this is a bit unnerving.
