Kenneth Grahame also wrote - in our family - the definitive Christmas story, Bertie's Escapades, about a pig of action who mounts an audacious raid on Grahame's larder. Seasonal meta Yule animal fiction, it really can't be beaten. Mr Barrett was sadly unavailable for comment.

The day that Syd died, I was in Henley and tried to get into the Grahame museum but it was closed. I walked around to the back where there is an enormous picture window ... and a sudden shaft of sunlight hit the window .. and illuminated a tableau illustrating The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. That was for Syd. And yes, I cried <3
