A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@vivian: i would like another teaching job. I adore teaching, but i have outgrown the situation that i am in. Would love to get back to teaching college, i did that before dj icepack was born. I have been teaching high school like it's college all this time, but the students are not typically as skilled or open minded.
Avatar 9:54am Listener Gregory:

Like this Jain track a lot, but I am not sure about "cultivating self-love." I think there is already quite a bit of self-love around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Vivian:

Whenever you described projects for your class, I thought it sounded advanced for high school, basing it on my memories of hs, which frankly has been many years. Have you applied to any colleges?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Trouble:

@vivian: last year i sent my resume around to a few schools but need to activate much more this spring.

Just being themselves, Threemoons, and chasing each other to hell and back (as much as possible in three rooms of a four-room railroad). But it gets the dog nervous when it happens and we're out of commission, so he starts crying, and it's a whole thing.

@douginjc: my school announced remote until mid january; will re-evaluate at that point. I am not sure how the students are handling it, since it was just announced and we are not back to classes yet. i am ok with it, the numbers are insane and not all the students are vaccinated, so it makes sense to me.

Last night finished the library-loaned James McBride book “Kill ‘Em and Leave: Searching for James Brown and the American Soul.” Really good, with some top philosophizing. As is my habit those passages were read into my phone notes for posterity. Will share some.

@trouble That's good to hear. Half of my work is out with covid right now. I'm enjoying the forced isolation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Zipperhead7:

Hi folks. Just want to second what AlanR said. The amount of work that goes into this show must be formidable. How much is pre-planned and how much is winging it? Also, good luck on finding a college art gig. Chronicle of Higher Ed has many job postings and was my go-to when I was looking for an academic gig. You can access the ads free a week after they're posted.
Maybe there's a website that covers area arts similar to glasstire in Texas: glasstire.com
Avatar 10:22am Listener Gregory:

@ZinnTM, that is such a good book. It leaves out half the things you would expect in a musical biography, yet cuts right to the bone of Brown's roots in race and poverty, and how that affected not only his life, but the sad case of his estate after he died. Really wonderful read.

@Trouble: Yes! This Annette Peacock reissue was definitely a personal hit of 2021. I adore the "I'm the One" record but never really explored anything beyond that. This one has great drumming all over, including a guy from mid-era Brian Auger's Oblivion Express who is amazing.

  10:33am Zinn The Mood:

Indeed, @LGregory. Can’t understand JB without the context of racism and poverty. Complicated dude, and *lonely* at his core, despite being for so many years adulated as the voice of black America. McBride’s also a musician himself, which affords him that essential inside view of the sausage-making involved with all aspects of it. Wonderful writer. Was a bit reluctant at first to read his satirical book on abolitionist John Brown, being such a radical hero to many of us (and perhaps none more than late activist comedian Dick Gregory). But it was also really good, delivered with an obvious reverence for Captain Brown but at the same time humanizing him through satire.

@Doug in JC apparently they are hard to shell and therefore not commercially popular. A friend of mine had a few trees on his property. Nuts were tasty but impossible to extract the meat out easily...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Vivian:

Passaic - CLOUDSPLITTER is amazing ... when I hike up Tahawus/Cloudsplitter/Marcy .. I/we leave NYC at 10pm-midnight to avoid the traffic and arrive in Lake Placid in the pre-dawn ... We sleep in John Brown's Barn/Leantoo and then head out .. The rangers do not arrive until after 8-9am .. crazy wee frogs with amazing lungs... little sleep but a lot of joy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Handy Haversack:

Vivian, the recipe I'm using says basically to forget the manicotti shells and instead get fresh sheet pasta and cut it into 4" X 4" squares. Slap a spoonful of your filling in the middle, then roll into a tube and bake seam-side down. So that's what we did yesterday, went to north Wburg to get fresh pasta and house-made ricotta.
  10:42am Zinn The Mood:

Ok, this Sheffield track is getting my blood-flowing to look up the McBride passages.
Dig this, Trouble and the Troubled:

“Here’s how the music industry in America works: a trumpet player blows a solo in a Philly nightclub in 1945. Someone slapped it on a record, and 50 years later that same solo is a final in a college jazz department, and your kid pays $60,000 a year to take the final, while the guy who blew the solo out of his guts in the first place is deader than yesterday’s rice and beans, his family is suffering from the same social illness that created his great solo, and nobody gave two hoots about the guy when he died and nobody gives two hoots about his family now. They call that capitalism, The Way of the World, Showbiz, You Gotta Suck It Up, an upcoming Movie About Diversity, and my favorite term, Cultural History. I call it fear, and it has lived in the heart of every black American musician last hundred years.

That fear is nearly impossible to explain if you are not a musician who understands the sweat involved in making music. It’s rarely talked about in the music press, which plays along in pretending there are no race problems in the music business. Why shouldn’t it? Musicians of all colors get snookered by the biz. We all leave our blood on the floor for the Big Corporation, Big Brother, the Record Label, the Country and Western Community - whatever you wanna call it. The difference is this: most of us don’t walk through department stores buzzing with background music that plays ninth chords borrowed from our history. Most of us don’t know the feeling of sweating for hours over your music, then watching a foreigner from, say, England or Australia cop that music, ape their version of it, make a million, and call you a genius while they’re living high and you’re barely living.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Vivian:

Handy & JC: I thought about doing the same with lasagna sheets. Thinking about making my own pasta next year. Would do it now but work is consuming my time at the moment..

Hey HH. Have the best memories of holidays and opening the elevator doors just outside my grandparents’ 5th floor apartment in the Bronx and being enveloped in the aroma of her cooking. Inside were ironing boards covered with homemade ravioli and manicotti, an antipasto plate and a bowl with breadsticks wrapped in prosciutto slices that we kids we devour before even our shoes were off. Magical feasts.
Have been making her “gravy” for years, but less frequently these days as we’re trying to use less and less meat. As amazing as her sauce is I think I prefer my own puttanesca.

Heya Trubb and end of year-ers. Joan Didion lived down the road from me growing up (she was already grown up) before she hit the big time and married John Gregory Dunne. She's the pride of Sacramento.

Oy, our neighbors are positive. They went to an all-vaxxed kids concert, and got hit.

Omicron doesn't seem to care about vaccines, so we have to be ever vigilant. No mosh pits, no football games, no nothing for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am sphere:

@ Steve - I played baritone horn from elementary school through early college. Have you ever heard of Tuba Christmas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Handy Haversack:

A great time to patent that home mosh-pit starter kit, Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am sphere:

@Handy - wow, that is interesting! i would have gone for the Demon Princes books but I can go with the Wyst books. btw, they are available in Kindle ebook.

We're going to try an arrabbiata sauce, but I know we'll hear about it from Little Human. She's still early on in her chili pepper trajectory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Carmichael:

I just finished the last John LeCarre book called Silverview, and found out he wrote a recent addition to the George Smiley series before passing. Just downloaded it last night.

Oh man, @morphe! That is so heavy and awe-inspiring! Gonna have that picture in my head next time I head up there, of you sleeping in the barn and those frogs croaking away.

For a while now I’ve been thinking of trying to organize some kind of book club or something in this part of Queens, always with John Brown and James Baldwin in mind. But have wondered about both how to go about such an endeavor, and just how many people might be interested. And I put it off…

Yet, one comes to the comment section of Trouble’s show and inadvertently finds almost a handful of real John Brown fans. A truly amazing place for kindred spirits; the cross-section of music and literature (and cooking, and politics, too!) is very affirming.

@PR Blues last summer upstate I found an interesting academic book on Brown, called “The Black Hearts of Men: Radical Abolitionists and the Transformation of Race” www.johnstauffer.org...

Happy New Year wishes to you all!

I've done basement floors with water-based epoxy. Not very durable, really. Good old smelly oil floor paint is the thing. But Godspeed.

Two-part, though. That may make a difference.

Thanks for what you do and who you are, Trouble. As we said in Occupy, “You Are Not Alone. You Are Not A Loan. All Our Grievances Are Connected.”

One more for the road from McBride:

“Yet, ironically, the same man who eschewed drugs and preached toeing the straight and narrow veered off it so badly at the end of his life that he became the subject of comedy routines. The film Get On Up shows a man who was once the essence of black American pride as a wild, crazy, torn up mess, which is about right, I guess – except you could say that about a hungry three year old.
It’s a perfect storm of wrong history, offered up while the man’s estate was still flying in the air for grabs, with lawyers gorging themselves on his musical carcass, which he left for the poor, not for them. The whole thing is a troubling metaphor for what the race discourse has become an American now. A troubled world, this new America, a disturbing world, where the N-word is verboten but the notion of poverty is not; a world with liars on both sides of the racial divide it will say anything and twist history anyway they can in order to gain a percentage; a nation of private for profit Supermax prison is full of young man who desperately need help, guarded by other young man who wants worked on farms and grew corn and raised cows in the very same places where those prisons now sit. A world of beer, cognac, guns, violence, nice cars, tennis shoes, and Super Bowl commercials. Jive. For us. By us. Soul to us. By ourselves.
The new cultural export: American Jive.
And today the lawyers argue about his estate while the guy once gave us so much pride is buried in his daughter Deanna’s front yard, his body having been deposited there while some of his children part of the idea of his home becoming a museum Sunday.
By the time that “museum” opens, if it ever does, the cultural history well shifted so much that the tundra will be unrecognizable. And there’s not much more to look for in the story, really. Because the James Brown story is not about James Brown. It’s about who’s getting paid, whose interest is involved, who can squeeze the estate and black history for more. It’s all in the hands of the executors, the lawyers, Brown’s children, his ex-wife, his ex friends. It’s about how that whole pot gets passed around. It’s reflective of the sad state and American popular emporium these days, where for the last decade talent shows judged by stars whose names will forget five minutes past breakfast decide who has “talent” in America, while songs like “Bitch Better Have My Money” climb the charts. Maybe that’s the kind of song we always wanted. Maybe it’s a song we all deserve. But it wasn’t the song Brown had in mind.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Will the Sound Guy:

gotcha, I tried that... it was junky. take care everyone!!
