A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

G'day Austin & Mutants!

Avatar 9:01pm austinrich:

Good Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm ironybread:

I can hear it...the season...the season is calling from INSIDE THE HOUSE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Mr Fab:

Great stuff Don-O, can't wait to hear the rest after this here "Mid-Valley Mutations."
Avatar 9:02pm Otis:

Meowy Christmas, haaa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Mr Fab:

"one of the more technically difficulty-less episodes" - ha, I think I know what you mean.
  9:05pm sufferwords:

diggin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm ironybread:

Freshman Austin no doubt is also growing out his hair and beard
Avatar 9:05pm Sonderangebot:

Hi Rich and all! I blame my technical difficulties on some kind of spirit that entered my computer because I didn't say the special magic formula for this winter equinox.
Avatar 9:05pm Mr. X:

I'm an entity
Avatar 9:05pm Don-O:

There can never be enough Disco X-mas with a touch of Star Wars on the side.
Avatar 9:06pm WR:

Hope the tech difficulty-less isn't jinxed by the optimism. :))
Avatar 9:07pm austinrich:

You know that Freshman Austin wore those bow-ties that hang down a bit, too, because even his bow-tie was shaggy.
Avatar 9:07pm austinrich:

I do love those Star Wars Disco records. They're so weird.
Avatar 9:08pm Don-O:

Optimism = yelling at the computers around here. At leat, strangers can't hear you scream.
Avatar 9:09pm austinrich:

Mr. X! Good to see you in the chat. Mr. X helped plan about half the program tonight, and we are currently planning another collaboration for future enjoyment on Sheen'as Jungle Room. Thanks Mr. X!
  9:09pm AndrewBunny:

Man, those drums are really 80s sounding. Strange for Ramones!
Avatar 9:09pm Don-O:

If I wasn't living in the armpit of AZ, I'd go out looking for as much of X-mas Disco records I can get!!
Avatar 9:10pm Mr. X:

YW. I had too much fun.
Avatar 9:10pm austinrich:

I have to admit: my x-max record collection is smaller than my Halloween Record Collection. That's just the way the monster mashes, I guess.
  9:11pm AndrewBunny:

Wobble and Levene!!!!
Avatar 9:11pm austinrich:

The Ramones have this weird period in the 80's where the production got really weird, they used some keyboards, and a lot of people really hated it. I have a soft spot for Subterranean Jungle... but there's a lot of junk in that era, too.
  9:13pm AndrewBunny:

I really liked the one they did with the guy from 10cc. Pleasant Dreams? Can't remember.
Avatar 9:13pm austinrich:

I don't actually own Pleasant Dreams, so I can't remember anything about it. I should probably give it a chance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Mr Fab:

Ah, the expanded "Metal Box" universe. Love it.
Avatar 9:15pm austinrich:

That tune was new to me, Mr. Fab, but when Mr. X introduced it to me, I was pretty into it.
Avatar 9:15pm Mr. X:

The rest of this Steel Leg vs. Electric Dread EP is reggae dub material. Hard to find vinyl, don't think it was ever released on CD, not even in a complilation.
  9:15pm AndrewBunny:

Wob just put out Metal Box in Dub on Cleopatra Records. I've been meaning to pick it up.
Avatar 9:15pm Don-O:

Don't Believe in Christmas! A true classic screw that White X-mas crap. You can learn from THIS track, especially with that organ solo!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Mr Fab:

that song was basically Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" with new lyrics. Which is fine by me, Sonics RULE.
Avatar 9:16pm austinrich:

You can learn just about everything you need to know about the world from The Sonics.
Avatar 9:17pm Mr. X:

Some folks like water, some folks like wine...
Avatar 9:17pm austinrich:

I used to get drunk at bars and yell loudly that Bob Wills, Link Wray and The Sonics invented Punk Rock. I was pretty young.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Mr Fab:

Ha, Bob Wills, huh?

Thanks for the Pearl Bailey, that’s one of Mrs. Fab‘s favorites.
Avatar 9:23pm austinrich:

austinrich.org...
Avatar 9:23pm Mr. X:

I can see Tom Peterson's torso-less head yelling at me as we speak.
Avatar 9:25pm Otis:

If the show goes over that's swell. Will keep the program in connection cue and start when you do the doo good buddy.
Avatar 9:26pm austinrich:

I'll still try to reign it in. I can just go and go if I'm left unchecked.
Avatar 9:27pm Otis:

Ha, gotcha! I know, same here.
  9:27pm gretta:

hi! loving the show! so glad i could tune in! i ate a lot of mac and cheese and now i'm just laying around listening
Avatar 9:27pm Otis:

Fan of all the Rotary C albums here!
Avatar 9:28pm austinrich:

Bob Wills TOTALLY has some pretty wild songs, and he's usually got a subversive angle.
Avatar 9:28pm austinrich:

Gretta! Great to see you in the chat!
  9:28pm gretta:

i've been here since the beginning of the show but didn't know about the chat tilyou just said :) happy holidays to you!
Avatar 9:29pm austinrich:

I'm only just getting to know Rotary C, and they're pretty great, Otis. Got to find more.
Avatar 9:30pm austinrich:

Gretta: Aren't you on the radio in PDX? You were running sound for the Negativland I was running merch for.
  9:32pm gretta:

this is true, but i haven't done anything else on air since. i'm in ops officially for KFFP freeform but it's been not much work lately. that negativland show was the highlight of 2021 for me
Avatar 9:32pm austinrich:

"Greetings From All Daleks!"
Avatar 9:33pm austinrich:

Those two Negativland show I got to see (one where I opened for them) was truly the highlight of 2021 for me, too. I still can't believe it happened.
Avatar 9:34pm Otis:

Been so long since I attended a Negativland show, last was It's All In Your Head in SF/2005... before that True/False Seattle 2000.
Avatar 9:35pm austinrich:

The new tour that they went on for their new album was VERY good. Wobbly and Mark play together VERY well these days, and they just go and go. No setlists, just whatever they want. It's really cool.
Avatar 9:36pm Mr. X:

X(mas)terminate?
Avatar 9:36pm austinrich:

"NO SNOW BELOW!"
Avatar 9:36pm austinrich:

I LOVED that "It's All In Your Head" tour, but that material is right in the pocket for me.
Avatar 9:37pm Otis:

I think Wobbly/Jon was there and Steev Hise with Don and Mark... time blurs... do remember seeing it at Great American Music Hall while living in San Fran that year.
Avatar 9:40pm austinrich:

I was such a nerd for MX-80, that when they did the push for this in 2004, I followed the press / release schedule almost religiously. I was sad the album didn't hit bigger, but I think it was out of sync with the music world in the early 2000's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Mr Fab:

You gotta send me a proto-punk Bob Wills song list, Austin.
Avatar 9:41pm austinrich:

I'll do a show about it. "Cow-Punk." It'll be a good goal for 2022.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm ironybread:

If I learn VCR repair can I rent for free
Avatar 9:44pm Otis:

Yes, Ironybread. We only have Heavy Metal Parking Lot and No Other Possibility (with free feather) left, all yours!
  9:45pm gretta:

Otis, are you a VHS sales person??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm ironybread:

If you play Steel Leg and Wet Leg in the same set, do you have to end the set with something from Rust Never Sleeps? #Oxidation
Avatar 9:46pm Otis:

In a former dimension, I passed as one Gretta.
Avatar 9:46pm austinrich:

I'm not sure what a "Wet Leg" is, but I don't have one (nor is there one in the playlist). But in the interest of Chemistry enthusiasts: should I?
Avatar 9:47pm Otis:

Wet Leg are so great.
Avatar 9:47pm austinrich:

Hmmmm. I will investigate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm ironybread:

Austin: confirming that Negativland's last tour was indeed super-iffic, at least the show I saw in L.A. Can't say I've ever played with them but I did run their merch.
Avatar 9:49pm Mr. X:

Why cån't we håve cool symbols over our letters?
Avatar 9:50pm ▽▽⦰†i̠̞̦s͛ ✄ 𝒇ⓞ𝒹𝒹Ξ🅡 ⠁⡠:

Anything is possible Mr. X
Avatar 9:51pm austinrich:

I got to play a show where I sat in with Mark and The Weatherman in Seattle, when we were all sitting in with Monster Planet at a Halloween show. That was a contender for one of the greatest nights of my life; the bar usually had drag shows, but that night, they had us.
Avatar 9:51pm austinrich:

Ladies & Gentlemen: Mr. Tiny Tim!
Avatar 9:52pm ▽▽⦰†i̠̞̦s͛ ✄ 𝒇ⓞ𝒹𝒹Ξ🅡 ⠁⡠:

Nice Austin, what spot was it? Used to live in Seattle for a few years, a few years back. I sat in with Mark in Seattle and Portland in 1998 for X-Day Subgenius shows playing bulldada, highlight fun too.
Avatar 9:53pm Mr. X:

They always interrupted Tiny Tim's performances on the variety and comedy shows
Avatar 9:54pm austinrich:

I'll have to look up the name of the club. It has since shut down due to covid.

In the early 90's, that same club was the place Nirvana had their Nevermind album release, apparently.
Avatar 9:55pm Otis:

Crocodile maybe? I moved to Seattle in '97 though... a bit after the Nirvasion.
Avatar 9:55pm austinrich:

I think Tiny Tim was mistreated on TV for the most part. His records are goldmines of weird old songs.
Avatar 9:55pm Otis:

Love Lenny Dee and that his records as still bargain bin magic.
Avatar 9:56pm austinrich:

Don't think it was Crocodile. I was curious about that club, but could never get booked there.
Avatar 9:56pm Otis:

Saw some great shows at the Croc. Top was probably Damo from Can on tour in 2001-ish.
  9:59pm AndrewBunny:

Only time I got to see Negativland was the It's All In Your Head FM show when we were Katrina-evacuated in Portland. At the Baghdad Theatre IIRC...
Avatar 10:04pm austinrich:

I would have LOVED to see Damo! How great!
Avatar 10:05pm austinrich:

I was at that show at the Baghdad, AndrewBunny!
Avatar 10:05pm Mr. X:

I think its incredible how Spike Jones, or someone in his band, wrote lyrics for this whole thing.
Avatar 10:06pm Otis:

Here too Mr X ... Madcap Conducting!
Avatar 10:06pm austinrich:

Spike Jones continues to impress me more and more as I get older. He's no longer that "funny" guy, but looms a lot larger. I would love to get some suits like his and command a band like the City Slickers.
Avatar 10:10pm Mr. X:

Speaking of Chuck Berry, roll over Beethoven, tell Tchaikovsky the news, your ballet has been skewed!
Avatar 10:10pm austinrich:

That percussive accent is such trademark Spike Jones.
Avatar 10:11pm austinrich:

What other music from Chuck Berry's contemporaries were referencing classical artists? Or inventing the entire riff-structure of rock and roll?
Avatar 10:11pm Mr. X:

More cowbell!
  10:12pm AndrewBunny:

Spike's daughter, Leslie, is a big-time audio engineer. I remember reading an interview with her in Tape-Op.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm ironybread:

Aw man, the Spike Jones Nutcracker Suite is also going to be in my Christmas show, which I already pre-recorded for broadcast on 12/25! So nobody listen to my show on Christmas morning if you aren't hip.
Avatar 10:14pm austinrich:

Great minds think alike, Ironybread! I think there's some other Spike Jones Christmas music out there. Is it too late to replace?
Avatar 10:15pm austinrich:

I'll have to look into Leslie. I'm not familiar. I probably should be.
Avatar 10:15pm Mr. X:

We should have color coordinated. Sorry Ironybread.
Avatar 10:16pm austinrich:

I mean, that's the problem with the holiday season. Always hearing the same songs over and over again.
Avatar 10:17pm austinrich:

"This Dance Is Tough-ski..."
Avatar 10:18pm Don-O:

SPIKE!!
Avatar 10:18pm austinrich:

Everyone loves Spike Jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm McGroovey:

The whole Spike Jones Nutcracker Suite ? Ultra-cool!

@ironybread Don't worry. Most of us are thinking "Oh, now I have to figure out how to listen Christmas morning, and I have to remember to do it!"
Avatar 10:19pm Mr. X:

The flower rhymes are brilliant
Avatar 10:20pm austinrich:

Seriously: I'll tune in for Spike on Christmas Day, for sure.
Avatar 10:20pm Don-O:

Murdering The Classics is an essential album, though the original mastering sucks: too much echo and terrible stereophonic sound.
Avatar 10:21pm austinrich:

I would love for someone to do a very cool, super-high-end remastering of Spike's work. How cool would that be?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm ironybread:

A great followup to this suite for you listening at home is "Wonderland" by Caravan Palace. #SampleChasing
Avatar 10:27pm austinrich:

I need another helper-elf (and or helper-monkey) to get the playlist published in a timely manner. The Lava Lamp Lounge only has one staff member right now due to covid regulations, and unfortunately, I'm terrible to work with. HR complaints all day long.
Avatar 10:28pm austinrich:

Ironybread: I don't know Caravan Palace. I'll have to check that out... unless you're playing it on your show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Mr Fab:

I wouldn’t sweat playing the Spike Jones again ironybread- it’s such a mind-boggler it deserves to be heard as often as, say, “Last Christmas.”
Avatar 10:29pm austinrich:

Since I have you in the chat, and I know your mom is listening too: what inspired the selections you made for this show, Mr. X? And: what does Marj think?
Avatar 10:32pm austinrich:

I checked with the official rules, and this does NOT count as being WHAM!ed, at least according to the officiates I spoke with.
Avatar 10:33pm Mr. X:

I was just trying to cater to you and your audience, Austin. I know you like electronica, punk, comedy, and weirdness in general.
Avatar 10:33pm austinrich:

Guilty as charged, Mr. X.
Avatar 10:34pm Mr. X:

Mom is in the other room. I'll go check whether she is still listening.
Avatar 10:34pm Don-O:

Wow! That sounds cheap!
Avatar 10:35pm austinrich:

That was actually made with computer floppy discs, controlled by another machine, to run the motors at different speeds to create the sounds.
Avatar 10:35pm Otis:

Jingle Cats would go on my top 2021 list, if I did one.
  10:35pm AndrewBunny:

Oh, please let the barking dogs Jingle Bells be next!
Avatar 10:35pm austinrich:

The Floppotron has a lot of videos online, and a few for the holidays, now.
Avatar 10:38pm Mr. X:

For the record, Jingle Cats was NOT my suggestion. I was was hoping we could avoid this...
Avatar 10:38pm austinrich:

A fan of my Max Headroom podcast mailed me this single, along with some DVDs of some rare UK Max Headroom stuff that never aired in the US.
Avatar 10:38pm Mr. X:

Marj is enjoying it. She said Nutcracker Suite was a good one.
Avatar 10:39pm austinrich:

Sorry to ruin the flow, Mr. X! I'm a fan of that Jingle Cats record, since it was a staple of Dr. D's show.
Avatar 10:40pm austinrich:

Apparently, this Max Headroom Christmas song (featured in his holiday special on Cinemax, which had Tina Turner as a guest), was a hit in the UK, but was almost completely unnoticed in the US.
Avatar 10:40pm Mr. X:

As long as you don't play the goats.
Avatar 10:40pm austinrich:

This show has a "no goat" promise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Mr Fab:

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two…
If you’re 93 and over,
SCREW YOU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm ironybread:

Anyone who DOESN'T play a Tim Maloney request is just nuts.
Avatar 10:45pm austinrich:

I have listened to most things Tim has said, and things have worked out pretty good since then.
Avatar 10:45pm Otis:

Cranial Fishers, that's a flashback to the Snuggles list a good 20 years ago. Nice.
Avatar 10:45pm austinrich:

I guess they are active again, Otis! I knew that name rang a faint bell, but Tim reminded me CF was on the Snuggles list.
Avatar 10:47pm Otis:

I was fairly active on Snuggles in the late 90s... been a bit. Checking out the website now. Yay and thanks!
Avatar 10:47pm austinrich:
