A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

On 2/4/2004 John Oswald & Rascali Klepitoire, a string and wind ensemble, did a 90-minute program of Oswald's works at Redcat in L.A. This ranged from a small group accompanying an animated film made up of French and English words assembling and dissolving, to a solo piece for applauder and strobe light. (Applaud in a dark space lit only by a strobe light, and clap out of time with the strobe, and you’ll get the slowest slowhand in audience-approval history.) At intermission I thought I spotted Matt Groening. Matt was an early fan of Plunderphonics, and in fact he graciously lent me a copy of the original Plunderphonic CD back in 1999 when I was working at Creative Production Group (I said I was doing a documentary on found sound and I wanted to burn a copy for research material, and he had a runner on Futurama drive it over to me). So when I saw Oswald and Groening chatting, I said to Matt "You don't know me, but you lent me your copy of Plunderphonic back in the day." “Oh! You’re that guy!” he said. And they chatted a bit, and Matt said to John, “Geez, I haven’t been to L.A. since 1986. How have you been, Matt?” “Oh, I won the cartoon lottery.”

Zip: my suggestion as an archivist is, don't burn anything to CD! Rip your CDs to your hard drive! #LongTermStorageSolutions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Rich in Washington:

Early Soundgarden isn't all that bad. They're actually not THAT bad. I like their guitar player Kim Thayil. It's that hipster thing where we don't take our chicks back after they fall out of the nest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm

Kat - honestly I don't have a music library management app. I just have to remember which sounds I downloaded, which I digitized from CD, which I digitized from vinyl, and which came from private collections

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm

I've never tried DJing on iPad. One of these days I'll try to make music/noise on it. I got it for travel, but since I don't travel atm I just play Angry Birds 2 on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
ironybread:

Rich, how's the wind and rain where you are?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Rich in Washington:

It's sorta dried out (unlike my lasagna) but really cold. It snowed here the other day but the rain melted it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
ultradamno:

As a plus, the lasagna would distract the cat from the spinning 45 it's eyeing.

I once worked for a guy I saw throw his cat across the store because it stepped on his new, first time played ELO bootleg mid-spin.
Avatar 8:31pm
ARB:

A friend once made me lasagna with kelp instead of noodles, worked pretty good.
Avatar 8:31pm
spodiodi:

i'm typing on my new mac laptop (good sale, base model, after deliberating for a year, then letting it sit here for over a month) since a few days ago. it's replacing the one i bought in 2009 (that didn't really need replacing :-B)

last one was 1k and made it over 12 years (with multiple upgrades and replacements; and, again, it's still fine, just a little slow, and not supported by the heartless capitalists at one infinite loop)

new one was had, with tax and shipping, to my door for over a hundred bucks less than my last (mac) antique

still getting used to it/plenty left to set up/mess up

i need to hit the good will to unload some old machines
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm

Hi Rich! Is this picture a unholy alliance between Jerry Lewis and The Stepford Wives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm

Last time I made lasagna was a disaster. Velveeta was way past its shelf life. I think my mom gave me a brick of it when I was 20.

Tom Waits related story from my teen years: I had a couple of friends from high school drama club who were super into Tom Waits (this was circa Closing Time/Heart of Saturday night). One of them had been having a fan mail correspondence with Mr. Waits. So Waits played a club in Atlanta (we lived in the suburbs at the time) with Steve Martin opening. we were underage, tried to get in but couldn't. they let us hang out in the lobby for a while though. Waits came out and said hi to my friend. I had my head down on a ledge that had flyers on it and Steve Martin walked by and remarked, 'You're reading too close."
