A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Kat in Chicago:

Some day I will attempt a lasagna again. Never been happy with my efforts.
Avatar 8:16pm ironybread:

On 2/4/2004 John Oswald & Rascali Klepitoire, a string and wind ensemble, did a 90-minute program of Oswald's works at Redcat in L.A. This ranged from a small group accompanying an animated film made up of French and English words assembling and dissolving, to a solo piece for applauder and strobe light. (Applaud in a dark space lit only by a strobe light, and clap out of time with the strobe, and you’ll get the slowest slowhand in audience-approval history.) At intermission I thought I spotted Matt Groening. Matt was an early fan of Plunderphonics, and in fact he graciously lent me a copy of the original Plunderphonic CD back in 1999 when I was working at Creative Production Group (I said I was doing a documentary on found sound and I wanted to burn a copy for research material, and he had a runner on Futurama drive it over to me). So when I saw Oswald and Groening chatting, I said to Matt "You don't know me, but you lent me your copy of Plunderphonic back in the day." “Oh! You’re that guy!” he said. And they chatted a bit, and Matt said to John, “Geez, I haven’t been to L.A. since 1986. How have you been, Matt?” “Oh, I won the cartoon lottery.”
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Kat in Chicago:

He won the cartoon lottery like 200 times over
Avatar 🎸 8:17pm john eck:

Woah this is sick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Mr Fab:

i think i was at that show, ironybread. We have probably been crossing paths for years.
Avatar 8:20pm ARB:

I get you for an hour though! 💔
Avatar 8:21pm ironybread:

NEXT YEAR FAB we need to meet in person, NO OTHER POSSIBILITY
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Zipperhead7:

Speaking of burning, I gotta get a new Mac and need to get a program for burning CDs. Any suggestions?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Kat in Chicago:

chrisconnelly.com...
Avatar 8:22pm ARB:

I snuck into the archives and listened to Soundgarden a few weeks ago, secret fan!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Kat in Chicago:

I need a PC program for music library management that sucks less than iTunes
Avatar 8:22pm ARB:

no longer secret
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Rich in Washington:

Me too, Kat! I just bought a newish MacBook after my trusty DJ one died and I think Apple's Music (iTunes replacement) sucks on toast.
Avatar 8:24pm ironybread:

Zip: my suggestion as an archivist is, don't burn anything to CD! Rip your CDs to your hard drive! #LongTermStorageSolutions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Rich in Washington:

Early Soundgarden isn't all that bad. They're actually not THAT bad. I like their guitar player Kim Thayil. It's that hipster thing where we don't take our chicks back after they fall out of the nest.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Kat in Chicago:

I can't afford Macs. DJ Thinkpad here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Rich in Washington:

I can only afford older, nearly useless macs.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm ultradamno:

I saw Soundgarden. Not a fan.
Avatar 8:25pm ironybread:

Kat - honestly I don't have a music library management app. I just have to remember which sounds I downloaded, which I digitized from CD, which I digitized from vinyl, and which came from private collections
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Aitch:

Old macs are never useless
Avatar 8:26pm ARB:

I went to his grave when it was fresh. But it wasn't a pilgrimage or anything, I just happened upon it.
Avatar 8:26pm ARB:

Agree, the "music" app sucks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Rich in Washington:

I wanted to replace my DJing laptop with a tablet or something but the Macbook sort of fell in my lap (no pun intended).
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Kat in Chicago:

I like early-midperiod Soundgarden and I liked them live a lot then too. I was very sad about Chris Cornell's passing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm ultradamno:

They did Spinal Tap's butt song, it was the hightlight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Rich in Washington:

But I am digging new Mixxx though.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Kat in Chicago:

Haha yes I def saw them cover Big Bottom
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm chresti:

We have 2 old macs.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Aitch:

less heart strings than Pearl Jam, so that at least a plus.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm ultradamno:

You could give the lasagna to a cat, I hear they like that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Zipperhead7:

Irony -- I am a tactile sorta guy and used Toast to burn files onto gold CDs (too many crashed drives). But Toast seems like it's gotten pretty bloated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Rich in Washington:

I have a newer main mac that I'm too lazy to set up and I'm also scared of what I will lose in the process of updating.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Kat in Chicago:

I've never tried DJing on iPad. One of these days I'll try to make music/noise on it. I got it for travel, but since I don't travel atm I just play Angry Birds 2 on it
Avatar 8:30pm ironybread:

Rich, how's the wind and rain where you are?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Rich in Washington:

It's sorta dried out (unlike my lasagna) but really cold. It snowed here the other day but the rain melted it all.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:31pm ultradamno:

As a plus, the lasagna would distract the cat from the spinning 45 it's eyeing.

I once worked for a guy I saw throw his cat across the store because it stepped on his new, first time played ELO bootleg mid-spin.
Avatar 8:31pm ARB:

A friend once made me lasagna with kelp instead of noodles, worked pretty good.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:31pm spodiodi:

i'm typing on my new mac laptop (good sale, base model, after deliberating for a year, then letting it sit here for over a month) since a few days ago. it's replacing the one i bought in 2009 (that didn't really need replacing :-B)

last one was 1k and made it over 12 years (with multiple upgrades and replacements; and, again, it's still fine, just a little slow, and not supported by the heartless capitalists at one infinite loop)

new one was had, with tax and shipping, to my door for over a hundred bucks less than my last (mac) antique

still getting used to it/plenty left to set up/mess up

i need to hit the good will to unload some old machines
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Rich in Washington:

That cat is now laying on the bed about three feet from me. He's ten years older and no longer intrigued by spinning records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Rich in Washington:

Mmmm! Kelp lasagna! Now we're talkin'!
Avatar 8:33pm ironybread:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:33pm spodiodi:

digging all the Byrne /Eno stuff, Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Rich in Washington:

I played the LP version of this a couple of weeks ago, so no, my memory isn't going. At least not THAT much!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Kat in Chicago:

yes thank you for the Eno/Byrne
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Kat in Chicago:

and I'm glad you played this again too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Rich! Is this picture a unholy alliance between Jerry Lewis and The Stepford Wives?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Zipperhead7:

An ELO bootleg? Why would this exist?! This bootleg is great, btw.
Last time I made lasagna was a disaster. Velveeta was way past its shelf life. I think my mom gave me a brick of it when I was 20.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Franco!
It's a portrait that Margaret Keane painted of Jerry Lewis and family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Franco Twinkie:

It's very, uh, interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Rich in Washington:

I recommend Adam Parfrey's book on the Keanes, Citizen Keane: The Big Lies Behind the Big Eyes
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm ultradamno:

@Zip Good question. I would never have known about it myself but he was an ELO superfan and I used to assist him at conventions...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Kat in Chicago:

I want to know why someone devoted a portion of their lifespan to making that picture exist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Will the Sound Guy:

diggin these tunes Rich
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Rich in Washington:

Yay! Thanks, Will the Sound Guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Mr Fab:

I was so obsessed with "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" that I even read the book by that name, which inspired the album title. I Was A Teenage African Literature Reader.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Kat in Chicago:

Adam Parfrey did a Keane book? Interested
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Franco Twinkie:

Why am I not surprised that Adam Parfrey would write a book about the Keanes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Rich in Washington:

Margaret did a lot of portraits for rich and famous people after she left and famously sued her husband Walter, who claimed all her paintings were done by him.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Kat in Chicago:

I didn't read My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, probably because I couldn't find it, but I read a couple of other books by its author
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm ultradamno:

Citizen Keane is a cute title.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm ultradamno:

The picture of him (Parfrey) in his wiki is pretty Kane as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Mr Fab:

i think Tim Burton based his film "Big Eyes' on that book. Just as he based
"Ed Wood" on another Feral House book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Franco Twinkie:

I read it too Fab! I love Amos Tutuola. I highly recommend The Palm Wine Drinkard.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm spodiodi:

good eye, Franco!
i'd been thinking it looked like him, but didn't ask.

it's difficult to look at pictures of Jerry Lewis (and Dean Martin) after witnessing this on Michael Shelley's playlist some time ago brianferrarinyc.com...

Tom Waits related story from my teen years: I had a couple of friends from high school drama club who were super into Tom Waits (this was circa Closing Time/Heart of Saturday night). One of them had been having a fan mail correspondence with Mr. Waits. So Waits played a club in Atlanta (we lived in the suburbs at the time) with Steve Martin opening. we were underage, tried to get in but couldn't. they let us hang out in the lobby for a while though. Waits came out and said hi to my friend. I had my head down on a ledge that had flyers on it and Steve Martin walked by and remarked, 'You're reading too close."
