Has Turkmenistan already been done?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:05pm YETI BOB:

Hi Continentals. What are the odds we're going to the Faroe Islands today?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Handy Haversack:

My Random Road Random Guess: U.S. Virgin Islands!

(Unless that's too small, David? But there are 100K people, and their music has its own WikiP page, so I'm figuring it's in the mix!)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm YETI BOB:

Same as the odds for any other place we haven't been yet! That's the beauty of randomness
Avatar 🚂 12:06pm βrian:

I'm still holding out for the Rustavi Choir.

It has, Alex.

Hello David, travelers and travelorettes!

Welcome Alex, Yeti Bob, βrian, Yvang!
Avatar 🚂 12:08pm Sem:

Hello, David, and all aboard. On the random road, it's San Marino or bust.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm YETI BOB:

HI David. There's an extra '.' at the end of that URL
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Stanley:

Toot Toot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David Dichelle:

Yes, I think the Virgin Islands (both separately or together?) should find their way to the Random Road at some point.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Diana in Hungary:

Yes, I ended the sentence with a period and messed up the link. Here's the good link: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David Dichelle:

Salutations, Stanley, Sem!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm YETI BOB:

249 countries and territories on the ISO list, we've done 57, so approx 192 to go (minus ones that will be disqualified)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm David Dichelle:

I'd say approximately 160 to go.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm doctorjazz:

The back-to-work / Thanksgiving / kitten-emergency cycle of crazy has resulted in my having two spreadsheets tracking the Road. The one at home has a better list of what's been noted as too small.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Diana in Hungary:

Oh, I am happy. Beautiful song, beautiful album.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm YETI BOB:

HH: I remember Bouvet Island is on the list. It's the most remote island in the world. I learn so much here.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Handy Haversack:

And apparently Antarctica doesn't make the cut. Alas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm David Dichelle:

Yes, the Random Road is a tough gig.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm YETI BOB:

HH: Right, but I dug up that photo of a Scotsman in full highland regalia playing bagpipe to the penguins. You had to fill in the sound with your imagination.
Avatar 🚂 12:22pm βrian:

Nor Île de la Possession. There's some wild territory down there.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Carmichael:

Heya David and freedom riders. I see someone snapped a pic of my home. At least they cleaned up a bit before doing so ...
Avatar 🚂 12:24pm βrian:

Yep, literally a wringer, in Québec.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Handy Haversack:

I'm meeting listener yerfriendpaul for lunch in 20 mins. We figured out just before the pandemic that our offices are only a few blocks apart! So I'll likely miss the Roud and maybe even the Random Road Reveal. But I have a good feeling about the U.S. Virgin Islands!

Back with you all when I can.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm YETI BOB:

enjoy yr lunches YFP & HH!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Michael 98145:

Hello, Friends
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Carmichael:

Nepal!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Diana in Hungary:

Thank you for playing Cz.K. Sebő today! I don't know for sure what "Felzizeg" means--I will find out and let you know--but "zizeg" means "buzz" or "rustle," and the prefix "fel-" often means "out loud" when it precedes a verb having to do with a sound, so I think "felzizeg" means "it rustles out loud," or "it buzzes forth," or something along those lines.
  12:29pm Marie:

I'm sorry if I missed this but what does the word "Lillibulero" mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Diana!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm David Dichelle:

Hello Carmichael and Michael!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Handy Haversack:

Marie, WikiP says: "The song's title and the words of the refrain have been interpreted as a garbled version of the Irish words Lile ba léir é, ba linn an lá, "Lilly was clear and ours was the day". "
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Handy Haversack:

"The lily may be a reference to the fleur de lis of France, or to the most celebrated astrologer of the mid seventeenth century, William Lilly, who became well known for prophesy at this time and to whom could readily be attributed foreknowledge that a Catholic would be king of England.[7] Alternatively, the lyrics could mean, "Lilly is clear [about this], the day will be ours". It is also thought that "Lilli" is a familiar form of William, and that bullero comes from the Irish "Buaill Léir ó", which gives: "William defeated all that remained".

Professor Breandán Ó Buachalla has claimed that they are a garbled version of the Irish sentence "Leir o, Leir o, leir o, leiro, Lilli bu leir o: bu linn an la, " which he translates as "Manifest, manifest, manifest, manifest, Lilly will be manifest, the day will be ours" referring to a possible prophecy of an Irish victory by the astrologer William Lilly.[8] "
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Diana in Hungary:

Ooh, I like this version by The Yetties!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Michael 98145:

Jaunty
  12:35pm Marie:

Hey Handy, wow, so interesting and informative, that info. is, thank you! It seems to me that that Professor prolly got it right.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Phillippe:

Hey everyone! I'm going with Brazil yet again. If David was using a dart and throwing it at a map, I'd like my chances better
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Michael 98145:

Whoop 'im with that stick
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm WR:

@12:24 @Handy Haversack: Please give our greetings and best wishes to @yerfriendpaul. And thank you for the Wikipedia info on the roud 160.

And hello David and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm David Dichelle:

Hey Phillippe! That dart has a life of its own...
  12:40pm Marie:

Lovely tunes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm David Dichelle:

Hello, WR!
Avatar 🚂 12:40pm βrian:

@Phillipe: It all depends on the cartographic projection, of course.
Avatar 🚂 12:42pm βrian:

(My Dart has a slant-six and it pretty much goes where it pleases.)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Diana in Hungary:

I think the Jackie Oates is my favorite in this Roud! But it's a tough call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm David Dichelle:

Yes, so many good versions of this one again.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Brian in UK:

Hello David & travellers.

Hi David! Fellow passengers!
Avatar 🚂 12:52pm Bas NL:

Oww.. Just missed De Vrede van Utrecht. A marked event in my hometown history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm David Dichelle:

Hey Coel and Bas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm David Dichelle:

Bas: Yes, it was a very short instrumental version of Lillibulero - blink your ears and you could miss it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm David Dichelle:

Marie: That is a very good take on the song, in fact.
Avatar 🚂 1:02pm Bas NL:

At the time of the signing of the many treaties they had a year and a half of cultural festivities. (De Vrede van Utrecht == The Peace(treaty) of Utrecht)

This Amor Hafsouni is great.

That Lyonaise Rai very good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm David Dichelle:

Yes, a great compilation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm David Dichelle:

Bas: Yes, I believe the album features music connected to those events or at least the era.
Avatar 🚂 1:19pm Hubig Pie:

Maghreb ? Morocco it is then and I say that's fine
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Diana in Hungary:

There's a village in Hungary called Vámosgyörk, through which I have passed a number of times, but it has nothing to do with Vamos or Vámonos.
  1:21pm Marie:

Neato. Apropos of not much, has anyone seen the German film, "Barbara"? I loved it
Avatar 🚂 1:22pm Bas NL:

Before i rush home... my guess this week is Ghana!

Avatar 🚂 1:36pm Will in Norman:

I always end up tuning in after your roud segment, so pardon if you said this already today. But are you doing the roud index in order?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Handy Haversack:

Well, we screwed that up. Apparently Paul was waiting outside the restaurant while I waited inside. Life. Don't talk to me about life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm David Dichelle:

Hello Will, yes we are ascending the Roud ladder from week to week - although a few have to be skipped for lack of recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm David Dichelle:

Handy, as long as you have your towel.
Avatar 🚂 1:41pm Will in Norman:

OK good, that's what it looked like from the playlists. particularly looking forward to when you get to #299, the lincolshire poacher, mainly assuming that the shortwave numbers station version will be included in that 1
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Will, a very good call - love those numbers stations!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Brian in UK:

Wow, what a great cover!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm David Dichelle:

Still b/p: There is surely a pearl of wisdom in there somewhere.
  1:53pm Marie:

@Handy--I had a problem like that that kept recurring with one particular friend. It was strange, like, I didn't have that problem with other friends.
Avatar 🚂 1:54pm Hubig Pie:

I watched a bit of the Beatles doc. That McCartney was a real task master
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Handy Haversack:

Well, it was pleasant to sit and listen to the sounds of a quintessentially (UWS) Manhattan restaurant for a little while. We're going to make it happen, though!
Avatar 1:55pm still b/p:

The truth will set you eerf.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Phillippe:

@Marie @handy I had that happen with one friend so many times I figured out they were more "friend" than friend, if you catch my drift
  1:56pm Marie:

Yeah, the UWS still has a lot of old-school diners, and other stores, which I appreciate
Avatar 🚂 1:57pm Will in Norman:

Itly! What's she doing in Itly?!

Nice!
  1:58pm Marie:

@Phillippe--I am not friends with that person anymore, sadly--realized it wasn't a real friendship
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Handy Haversack:

It's semantically impossible to not be friends with yerfriendpaul.

But he's yer friend, not my friend!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:59pm YETI BOB:

(j/k, he's a great guy and I'd like to be friends with him)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Diana in Hungary:

Well, Cuba is sort of like Italy in a couple of ways. Espresso is an essential beverage for both, and peninsulas are somewhat like islands at times.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Handy Haversack:

He's yer friend now, YB!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm David Dichelle:

Diana: They are also both major orange producers.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Phillippe:

I was close. Both Brazil and Italy have flags, and the people in both countries eat food. Close enough for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm David Dichelle:

Phillippe: Bonus points!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm David Dichelle:

Sem was closest of course, no country could be closer to another.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Phillippe:

I'm both easily satisfied and a sore loser both at the same time. Some say that's a skill.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Handy Haversack:

K8 and I used to have a free place to stay in Rome. Italy is definitely the friendliest country for your budget-conscious traveling vegetarian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm David Dichelle:

Yes, I hear they have falafel and kebab.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Franco Twinkie:

I remember only seen ONE restaurant in all of Rome that wasn't Italian food.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm David Dichelle:

It would be interesting to present a Vatican passport at a border somewhere - just to see the looks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Franco Twinkie:

The Vatican has it's own post office.

I suspect Mussolini wasn't open to 'ethnic' food
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Phillippe:

A Vatican City random road would be the easiest yet -- just throw a hymnal at it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Italians tend to be kind of insular.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Handy Haversack:

The very first time we ever traveled, back in 2000, after I'd won some money, we stayed for a few nights with the family of a woman K8 was waiting tables with. They lived in a villa outside of Florence. Its oldest parts were from the eleventh century. Her parents were sculptors, so there was art everywhere, and the family was reclaiming an olive orchard, so fresh oil was everywhere. Anyway, we went out with her sister and her BF to a "casa dei popolo." As it was explained to us, the communist partisans were much stronger around Tuscany, and when Mussolini fell, they stepped in and helped run things. So these were collective restaurants that would open on the weekends just so the farmers and people in these tiny towns could have a place to be together on the weekends for food, drink, dancing. So great. Massive plates of food for the equivalent of $2. And it was a Friday night, so fish for everyone. When I tried to get by just eating bread, Paolo took me with him back into the kitchen and explained everything, and minutes later I had a FEAST of porcini pasta. Fantastic experience. And a great collective endeavor that feels increasingly unreal in a more and more atomized-by-capitalism world.

Italy is a favorite travel destination for Hungarians, for obvious reasons (seacoast, real pizza, proximity, Dante).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm chresti:

The first time I stayed Europe in the 80s, eating vegetarian meant beaucoup de fromage
Avatar 🚂 2:11pm Hubig Pie:

I hearin' The Pogues
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Phillippe:

semi-random fact I learned today that may be appropriate for our international bunch: the people who speak English as a second language outnumber those who speak it as their first language by 4 to 1
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Carmichael:

Yep, me too Hubig. Sally MacLennane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Next to Italy, Hungary has my favorite food.
Avatar 🚂 2:13pm Bas NL:

Hi again! Italia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm David Dichelle:

Lots of influences in the Italian folk scenes.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Michael 98145:

Great story @Handy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm David Dichelle:

Welcome back, Bas!

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Stanley:

Great story Handy. Italian cuisine is no problem for vegetarians. Unlike Spain where they think pork is a seasoning. As in 'salt and pepper sir? Pork?'
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Phillippe:

Ha, Stanley, I love that!
Avatar 🚂 2:15pm βrian:

For a while hear in the US, it was a trend for celebrity chefs to add bacon to every dish. Bacon!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:15pm chresti:

Phillippe, not surprised.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Phillippe:

@still b/p surprised that hasn't occurred yet, tbh
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Michael 98145:

Not much Sin Jamón in Spain
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Stanley:

Jamón - exactly Michael
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Phillippe:

I still don't get the inclusion of pork belly as a dish. "You want some meat with your fat?"
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Diana in Hungary:

Franco Twinkie: I love the food here too. My city (Szolnok) has an annual goulash festival, and it's serious goulash, of many varieties, from around the country.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Michael 98145:

@Phillippe, bacon w/ pretenses
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Stanley:

Phillippe - Pork is nothing without its lovely, lovely fat.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Stanley:

(not quite true, as I loves me Jamón)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Handy Haversack:

Diana, we once flew to Rome via Budapest on Malev! Nice sandwiches on that airline. Very friendly. K8 finally did notice we were going the long way round, but it was much the cheapest option.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Michael 98145:

( have to agree )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Franco Twinkie:

Handy, I stayed at an old olive farm outside of Sienna. It was fun to cook in the farm house kitchen. One day I was going to grill rabbit outside, but it started raining like crazy so I cooked them on a spit in the living room fireplace. It's good to eat like a savage when everyone is drunk on local Italian wine.

My experience with Barcelona/Spain is there must be severe punishment for serving less then perfect food.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Phillippe:

@michael @stanley I first tried pork belly at a Korean restaurant, and is just struck me as a slab of fat that didn't have enough meat in it to call it bacon. And it was the main dish. Ugh. Bulgogi, please...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Stanley:

Phillippe - the Italians love their lardo.
Avatar 🚂 2:23pm βrian:

Which reminds me of the Korean restaurant nearby which offers a certain dish with a "slap of bacon." That costs extra, naturally.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Handy Haversack:

My man in Edinburgh, whose mother and grandparents are Spanish, describes Madrid food as a sausage perfectly made in Barcelona that is then inserted between horse and saddle blanket and ridden very slowly to Madrid and served to you cold.
Avatar 🚂 2:26pm Bas NL:

That's a vivid description Handy! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Franco Twinkie:

A new food court just opened last week right down the street. Gobs of grilled meat is offered at the Korean place.
Avatar 2:26pm still b/p:

I'd love a Spanish song telling the sausage road-trip and disappointment story with Flamenco vocal intensity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm David Dichelle:

This one (Ganes) is in the Ladin language of Northern Italy.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Stanley:

I don't know whether it still goes on but in Spain it was the law to provide cheap wholesome lunchtime meals in restaurants Mondays to Fridays for the workers (and bone idle backpackers)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm chresti:

Good thing I didn't have sausage when I was in Madrid.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Diana in Hungary:

In Madrid, our hotel room was across the street from an all-night Flamenco bar.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Phillippe:

Biggest issue I have since we moved to Annapolis is the dearth of decent ethnic foods. There are a couple good Indian places, a good Thai restaurant/donut shop, some random sushi, and good Mexican place in a gas station (the Mexxon). No Korean, no Ethiopian, no Brazilian. Going out to dinner tonight and the closest thing we could find to unique food is an oyster bar.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:37pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Franco Twinkie:

Phillippe, the first Thanksgiving I spent away from home was in Annapolis. I went to a party where the turkey was stuffed with clams from The Chesapeake Bay. It was beyond amazing. Then I took the train to NYC and gorged myself on ethnic food.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm David Dichelle:

Yes, it is a dialect of German, but really a different language at that point, I'd say.
Avatar 🚂 2:45pm βrian:

And, really, what could go wrong with turkey was stuffed with clams?

I bet it is tasty, though.

Never knew there was so much happening in Italian music! My grandmother always had Italian music on, but that was not so diverse..
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Phillippe:

That sounds awesome, Franco. One of my family Thanksgiving traditions back in the day was for the men in the family to slouch in a back room in the basement and slurp oysters. I'm pretty much the only raw oyster lover in the family now, though, so that went by the wayside.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Michael 98145:

This has been great
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Phillippe:
