I finished the first episode of Get Back, and I was exhausted, so I can imagine how the Beatles felt. Jackson could easily have cut 30-45 minutes out of that episode and it would not have been missed.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Krys O.:

Had access to a lot of Beatles bootleg videos in the late 80s/early 90s to varying degrees of quality. I will eventually watch Get Back. Don't have Disney Plus.

The brain might not be fully developed until 27 or so, I hear.
Avatar 12:42pm Pseu Braun:

George=25 thanks, PJ. A baby I say!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm JG:

Totally wrong about Harrison. He played from a position of strength. He knew he could do whatever he wanted- record with his mates if he felt like it, or record his songs on his own, which he ultimately did. But when he had enough of the lads and left, they begged him to come back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Krys O.:

@JG: You're describing George's inner strength, but socially he deferred to the de facto leaders of the band.
  12:46pm Morgan:

isnt it a pity…

Ah, thanks for the Game Theory, Pseu. xxxooo
Avatar 12:46pm Pseu Braun:

Avatar 12:47pm Pseu Braun:

plus, they were ready to call CLAPTON, which was fking hilarious, and a f-u to George.
  12:48pm phat in Lincoln:

I didn't grow up until probably sometime last year.
  12:48pm PJ:

One thing that it's hard for someone outside to comprehend is that, for someone in a group that is really good, who has never been in a group that is bad, or just not as good, is that they have little or no idea what it is to make music without the support of their fellow band members, so the decision to break-up, or leave, or kick a band member out, doesn't carry nearly the weight it does for someone who is a fan. Joe Strummer said that he had no idea what a great band he had had until they kicked out Topper and then Mick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm JG:

@ Krys, yeah that's true. Just meant he wasn't weak. But in terms of leadership, you can't compare him to ,say, Paul. Paul seemed godlike in the movie. Like his style of leadership or not, he was leading and he was glowing with not only talent but authority
  12:49pm phat in Lincoln:

Also, I still can't believe Donette Thayer lives here now, speaking of Game Theory.
  12:50pm Morgan:

imagine trying to lead those 2 bobbleheads though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Brian in New Orleans:

Given their fame and accomplishments I'm surprised the sessions went as well as they did. Sure "Get Back" isnt Paul's best but it was fascinating to see Paul create that while being bothered by that dude about that ridiculous outdoor concert when Paul was creating on the Piano
  12:50pm phat in Lincoln:

@PJ choosing to leave a good band is also really difficult.
  12:51pm Morgan:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm karlward:

I loved what Pseu said about the McCartney show, "listen people, maybe there just aren't any new Paul McCartney stories."
  12:52pm PJ:

@phat: Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that any of the Beatles took it lightly. Just that the finality of it, and what they will be missing, doesn't hit until later.
  12:53pm phat in Lincoln:

@PJ oh, definitely.

RIP Big Ragu
  12:57pm PJ:

@JG - I disagree on Paul's "godlike" status, but he was just filling a void, since Epstein died, that they all recognized but no one else was willing to fill. They could have hired another manager (who, I have no idea, and given their choice of Klein later, would they have made a wise choice in 1967?) but they didn't, until their problems became intractable. John could have stepped up - and you can see the others wanting him to be more of a presence (maybe he could have been a "co-captain" with Paul?) - but he clearly didn't want to deal with it.
  12:58pm phat in Lincoln:

Gee whiz
  12:58pm Morgan:

you know id go from rags to riches…
  12:59pm PJ:

@Pseu: spot on with the Glyn Johns/LaZar resemblance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Krys O.:

Paul & Linda were urging the rest of the band to get behind Linda's father counter to John & Yoko's choice of Allen Klein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm JG:

LAst time I looked, the lenny and the squidtones album was real hard to find
  1:01pm Morgan:

JG i had no idea how highbrow the history of the Squigtones was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Krys O.:

The Credibility Gap were sadly overlooked.
  1:02pm PJ:

@Krys: The problem with Linda's father, from the others' perspective, is that, even if they thought he would be a better manager (and a rotting skunk corpse would have been better than Klein), they would assume he would be taking Paul's side all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Krys O.:

Indeed, PJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm JG:

@PJ, I thought, as an outsider looking in, "godlike", because to use another metaphor he had , of the four superstars, the biggest gravitational force. Everybody else was to some extent in his orbit. He shined the brightest.
  1:06pm PJ:

@Pseu: re the Beatles as followers, their gullibility (or credulity, to put a better spin on it) with people like the Maharishi, Magic Alex, Klein, et al., shows how they had really been sheltered by Epstein, and when that protection was removed, they were going to learn the hard way just how far peace and love alone will get you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm mndave:

Allyson Seconds really reminds me of Juliana Hatfield. digging it!
  1:07pm Morgan:

all the worst spinoff characters of my childhood were brilliant performers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm JG:

What Kinks song did Pseu sneak in on us?
Avatar 1:12pm Pseu Braun:

PJ I disagree about being "sheltered", a manager's job is to protect them from financial predators and to steer them into opportunity
  1:12pm Martymull:

JG thanks for asking, wondering that myself. Sounds like yet another obscure gem from Sir Raymond.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Krys O.:

Two Sisters
  1:13pm PJ:

@JG: I've only seen the first episode, but, from that, Paul definitely seems to bringing more to the table songwise (even if I don't care that much for a lot of them), but that's partly because no one else wants to listen to George, who is actually writing the best of their songs in this period (though the public won't get to hear most of them until Abbey Road and All Things Must Pass). But he needs someone like Lennon to check him, because a lot of his ideas are not that good (Maxwell's Silver Hammer, christ) and need to be developed or shut down. One of the problems is that Paul is the only one who has a lot of enthusiasm for this particular project. If they were less dismissive of George's songs, maybe he would bring more energy to the sessions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Mike Sin:

There was such a cool live clip of this Prince track that was shown quite a lot on MTV back in the day. One of my favorite tracks by him.
Avatar 1:15pm Pseu Braun:

OMG. EP1only yeah, "GET B ACK" to us when you've watched the thing, dang,please..
Avatar 1:16pm Pseu Braun:

Avatar 1:17pm Pseu Braun:

I my god I can't believe PJ has been going on like this on the board w/o having watched it, wtf YOU GUYS
  1:17pm Bob in DC:

Great tone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Krys O.:

Very Peter Green-like.
  1:18pm PJ:

@Pseu: Sure, but we can see how a lot of the Beatles business decisions they made after Epstein were bad for them. Part of that has to be because they never had to make those decisions before and didn't have anyone to advise them and were going on their "instincts", which were not so good. (And Epstein made a lot of not good business decisions too - on royalties and merch - when he was getting started with them.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm JG:

PJ- Not sure if you've seen this part yet, (its surprising and awesome) but as another example of George's strength, they jam on some of All Things Must Pass. Paul has suggestions and they sort of take the song in another direction, and not the right direction. George doesn't get indignant or object the way I think Paul would have if the roles were reversed, but simply shrugs them of. He must figured, F it, I'll just put this on my own album which thankfully he did
Avatar 1:18pm Pseu Braun:

blahblahblah PJ only talking about the show, save the
Beatles stuff for reddit wankers.
  1:19pm PJ:

@Pseu - What, you want me to watch the whole thing before adding my comments? It wouldn't be the Internet without uninformed comments!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Krys O.:

@Mike Sin: My memory is hazy, but is that the video with audience participation?
Avatar 1:20pm Pseu Braun:

Peter Green = The Magic Christian + Twickenham
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Mike Sin:

I loved "Get Back" from start to finish, but then I have been a hopeless nerded-out BeatlesGeek for decades now. I'm amazed to see folks rank on Michael Lindsay-Hogg -- The Beatles pulled such a "bait and switch" on this guy! This guy was called in to direct TV special with the main focus on the very visual and anticipated live concert -- He originally figured the rehearsing footage would such a small part of the whole broadcast -- he was thinking visually and was concentrating on the Beatles live at the venue and the fans and the build-up to that. I find the visual aspect of his videos for Paperback Writer, Rain, Hey Jude, and Revolution downright excellent!
  1:23pm PJ:

@JG: Yeah, George had a different way of dealing with that than either Paul or John, maybe because he still felt like the little brother rather than an equal (viz his comments to Paul "I'll just play whatever you want").
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Krys O.:

The Magic Christian is my second all-time favorite film. As a kid, I saw it heavily edited on TV home sick from school. The Badfinger music was incredible and I loved all the British comedy greats like Spike, Peter, Cleese, etc. It inspired me to read the book and later saw the uncut version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Krys O.:

Exactly, Mike Sin. Lindsay-Hogg did Raady, Steady, Go and that was ahead of its time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Krys O.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Krys O.:

Funny to consider that both Hogg and Richard Lester were Americans who gained immense experience working in England.
  1:27pm Morgan:

pseu @ 1:17 i love you
  1:27pm PJ:

@Mike Sin: Completely agree with you. It's just that in the context of the doc, we just see him as a gadfly for a not well-thought-out project that the Beatles seem half-hearted out about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Mike Sin:

@Krys O re: Prince vid -- I just remember being a straight-up live version with Prince on the top of his game and the band really delivering.
  1:29pm Morgan:

pseu like madmen too. great show but
  1:38pm phat in Lincoln:

Lol. The 50s revival in the 70s was pretty terrible mostly. Like that "Won't You Say" refrain in Jackson Browne's Loadout is peak awfulness. Makes angry, even.
  1:39pm Rick A:

Then in the 90s, the 70s were cool: Dazed and Confused, Boogie Nights, The People Vs. Larry Flynt, the latter two equating the 70s with drug orgies.
