just how popular was something like "variations of a theme called hanky panky" in the late 60s anyways? that was definitely a trip
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Ciggy:

I'm more of a loomer?
Avatar 🥁 3:10pm Erica:

I can't believe next week is Thanksgiving already.
Avatar 🥁 3:11pm Erica:

After that it's Christmas shopping.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Funky16Corners:

@zzz - Sadly unpopular, a fairly common theme in much of the brilliance in today's show.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Brian in UK:

Hello Larry & popsters.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Funky16Corners:

Brian!
Avatar 🥁 3:14pm TDK60:

Theo B. was in the '50s-'60s folkie scene. One of the earliest acts on Elektra when still a small indie folk label.
Avatar 🥁 3:14pm Erica:

I brought this up because I'm not ready for that.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Brian in UK:

Oh yes, Cat Stevens, the first album I bought with my paper round money on Deram.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:14pm zzz:

theodore bikel! just watched him the other day starring in an amazing episode of columbo where he is in some high IQ/genius social club and murders his business partner using some rube goldberg type set up
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Funky16Corners:

The album that Bikel track is from is the only thing he ever did like that and it has never been reissued.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Brian in UK:

produced by Mike Hurst who was in the Springfields with Dusty & her brother.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Funky16Corners:

This track issued in the US under the artist name Shannon (for no good reason that I can ascertain)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Brian in UK:

Abergavenny does not quite have the same effect as Phoenix or San Francisco!!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Funky16Corners:

Is it in Wales?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Brian in UK:

South Wales
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Funky16Corners:

It has that Welsh sound
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Brian in UK:

This Buckwheat is wacko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Webhamster Henry:

Hey I've been looking for Pure Buckwheat Honey for a long time: www.echonyc.com...
Avatar 🥁 3:28pm TDK60:

Bikel: That figures, Warner, right? (Reprise). Too big to care? The kind of album a reissue label like Sundazed could do.
Avatar 🥁 3:30pm Jeff Ash:

Gotta fly. I'll catch the other sets in the archive. Enjoy your day, everyone!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Webhamster Henry! It's worth tracking down.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Funky16Corners:

Later Jeff!
  3:31pm Andres:

I’m a collector of musical arcana is what I will tell my wife and kids the next time someone complains about the too many boxes of lps and 45s around here.
Avatar 🥁 3:31pm TDK60:

Wow, this Van Dyke P. is wild! I only discovered it years later via a cassette that had been discounted. A '60s gem, really.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - re Bikel - I would love to see that album rediscovered/reissued
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

aw, I never heard the VDP version of this before, sweet
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Brian in UK:

I used to own Song Cycle but could not find any continuity in it. That's Van Dyke Parks for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Webhamster Henry:

VDP is still active , here's a new record he did the string arrangements for: Van Dyke Parks orchestrates Verónica Valerio: Only in America
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Funky16Corners:

Song Cycle is proof positive that somebody at Reprise believed in VDP because it is wildly uncommercial, but brilliant
Avatar 🥁 3:32pm Erica:

This Van Dyke Parks song is very out there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

and, yes, that means that somehow I still haven't listened to Song Cycle?!??!??!?! Must remedy that ASAP
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Funky16Corners:

Some day I'll have to do a VDP show with all of his productions/compositions
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

YES PLEASE
Avatar 🥁 3:33pm TDK60:

...and his session playing work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Webhamster Henry:

Mx. Baba Bee: you might also like Jump! his concept album-musical based on Uncle Remus tales.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Yes, that too
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

WHH: There is so much VDP I haven't simmered in yet. This is a great idea, thanks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Brian in UK:

VDP did produce one of my favourites. Phil Ochs Greatest Hits.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Funky16Corners:

Oddly enough, VDP was/is obsessed with Trinidadian steel band music
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Brian in UK:

Yes, Larry. The Clang of the Yankee Reaper is good.
  3:36pm Andres:

One of those steel band 45s, from a thrift store, is a jewel in my collection!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Funky16Corners:

Parks had his hands all over this Ruthann 45
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Funky16Corners:

BTW This is Ruthann Friedman who wrote Windy for the Association
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Brian in UK:

Wish I could make sense of Surfs Up's lyrics.
Avatar 3:39pm David in California:

I heard a VDP track on a Warners 1970s album collecting tracks by some of their less commercial artists. Does anyone know what the title of that album was?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Funky16Corners:

@David - I have a few of those Warner loss leaders with VDP tracks, one with a Datsin commercial and one with music for the Ice Capades
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Phillippe:

hey there
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Phillippe!
Avatar 🥁 3:42pm Erica:

Hi Phillippe
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Brian in UK:

Larry, would it be fair to say that Del Shannon & Lou Christy travelled a similar path in the late Sixties?
Avatar 3:43pm David in California:

Thanks, Larry. It was an interesting album, which also had an Everly Brothers track on it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Brian in UK:

Hello Phillippe, missed you earlier.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Brian - Yes though I think Shannon's was a more substantial path, but Christiy had the right idea
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Funky16Corners:

@David - Here's one of them: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Funky16Corners:

Here's the other one: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Brian in UK:

First time I heard To Claudia... was on California '99.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Funky16Corners:

That's a wild album, with an insane package!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Funky16Corners:

There's also a 45 by Denny Laine that has a clean version of Claudia (no intro/segue)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Funky16Corners:

Not Denny Laine. Denny Doherty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Phillippe:

Hey Brian and Erica!
Avatar 3:50pm David in California:

Thanks again, Larry. I think it was the second one, since I remember "T for Texas" being on it. I wish more labels had issued that kind of collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Aitch:

Heroes and Villains a fave.
New to show, but very interesting
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Funky16Corners:

@David - Those loss leaders are gold mine.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Brian in UK:

Larry, you could play Twister on the album cover!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Funky16Corners:

Hi Aitch!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Funky16Corners:

@Brian - I think it compares to Isaac Hayes Black Moses for pure square footage used
  3:53pm Moog1 Radio:

YES! Timebox!
  3:54pm Moog1 Radio:

The guy who plays Barry Wom in the Rutles is the drummer!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Funky16Corners:

Such a great 45!
  3:54pm Andres:

+1 for Timebox!

The Deramic Sound System.
  3:55pm Moog1 Radio:

And the guy who stood in for the still image shot of Leppo from the Rutles is in this band. He co wrote some of the Rutles songs with Neil Innes.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Brian in UK:

Here's Mr Halsey.

  4:02pm Moog1 Radio:

I met him at the Chicago Beatefest back in the 90s when Neil Innes revived the Rutles and they did a concert!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Funky16Corners:

Innes was so cool.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Brian in UK:

Cracks me up that there are/were Rutles tribute bands.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Funky16Corners:

The "Progressive Roy Orbison". Lasted exactly one 45
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Mike Sin:

Many interesting tracks today! I think after the full onslaught of psychedelia in 1967, record labels and artists were probably wondering in earnest, "where is it going to go from here?" now that applying more involved studio techniques and instituting creative arranging were resonating well with audiences especially on the FM side of the dial.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Mike!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Brian in UK:

Mike Sin, agree. Think that the Beatles left a deep impression and suddenly there were 16 tracks to play with.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Funky16Corners:

I think a lot of the stuff on today's show is AM trying to suck up some of that FM juice.
Avatar 4:12pm David in California:

Wow, this is unlike anything else I've heard by Roy Orbison.
Avatar 🥁 4:12pm TDK60:

Never heard this Roy O. afore. Suite-like huh?
Avatar 🥁 4:13pm Erica:

Sounds like it Larry.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Funky16Corners:

Very suite-like. Largely the work of the guys from the previous track, Tupper Saussy and Don Gant of the Neon Philharmonic
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Brian in UK:

Larry, you are talking a foreign language AM/FM to us over here at that time.
Avatar 🥁 4:14pm TDK60:

How'd that fit onto a 45? Or, both sides?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Mike Sin:

@FunkyLarry -- Or artists and labels trying to create "product" (I know that term is hated!) that plays to both the AM and FM side of the dial!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Aitch:

No FM here in Australia until 1975
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm doctorjazz:

Hi folks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - One side of a 45!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Funky16Corners:

@MIke Sin - That works, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Webhamster Henry:

This show fits in well with my sporadic quests for concept albums.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Funky16Corners:

@Brian - I forget that the UK had the thin gruel of BBC approved pop and the pirates.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Funky16Corners:

@Webhamster Henry - There are lots of records here that fit that bill
Avatar 🥁 4:24pm TDK60:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Brian in UK:

Larry, just out of interest did Roy Orbison's song come out after Hey Jude. The single which extended how long a single could be?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Funky16Corners:

A year after Hey Jude
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:27pm StringOFperils:

Howdy! Love this old Springfield...sad sad Neil

Avatar 4:40pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

@Larry - would you consider this "toytown"? I've got tons of homemade comps on my hard drive that I have ye to fully discover.
Avatar 4:40pm David in California:

Andrew Sandoval played several tracks from The Ark on his Requiem to Chad Stuart on Come To The Sunshine last December.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Funky16Corners:

I wouldn't. Way too interesting and not at all cloying
Avatar 4:41pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

beautiful track, this, btw :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Funky16Corners:

Both of the late-period C&J albums are essential. Of Cabbages and Kings and The Ark
Avatar 🥁 4:42pm Erica:

Sorry about that. Got distracted by two alley cats in the backyard.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Funky16Corners:

This album has an officla release date of 1972, but the rumor is that it was recorded a few years earlier, possibly for release on Immediate and sat in the can looking for a new home, which it found on Rare Earth
Avatar 4:44pm David in California:

Chad Stuart said he went from making schlock rock to art rock. He was too hard on himself, as the earlier C&J was not schlock rock.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Funky16Corners:

Even their early stuff is pretty cool. Not exactly progressive, but not cheesy either
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Brian in UK:

Oh yes, love the bass. Great debut album.
Avatar 🥁 4:49pm TDK60:

Yeah David, I thought early C&J was good proto-folk-rock-pop.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Funky16Corners:

This is a really interesting transitional album: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 🥁 4:51pm Erica:

An underrated Turtles gem.
