ADA on the making of the new album = "I worked on this steady from July to this week (about 4 months). Many sound sources were incorporated. The foundation is beats I made that sampled tapes from my father in law's cambodian tape collection. I was visiting him in July and he gave me 6 tapes from his large collection. I had been admiring these tapes for years, I never expected he would give them to me unsolicited but I was not going to pass up the opportunity. I knew I had to sample the tapes. He lived through the war, his father and many other family/friends brutally murdered by the khmer rouge. He met my wife's mother in a refugee camp in Thailand, where she also had escaped with her mother and siblings, walking through the jungle at night. The stories they have are incredible, and heartbreaking. Once I had the beats, I decided to keep going. The beats became the first layer."

Yes there are a few other layers I can mention.

1. Cambodian tape samples - programmed in the SP-606
2. Percussion - I used a microphone to create many layers of drumming using instruments around the house
3. Keyboard - I used a keyboard to round out the sound and add more low end
4. GO-GO records - I used many go go records to add more syncopated percussion. Go-Go is a huge influence on me, having grown up with it outside DC.
5. Belly Dance records - I used a bunch of loops from records to make it even more percussive/dynamic
6. Voices: a key piece is the Frost/Nixon interviews where they talk about Cambodia, I have the record set; I also found an old Dateline from 1982 where they report the situation in Cambodia. "

Creating Kampuchea was an incredible listening experience for me today. I stopped everything to be motionless and let it sink in. It will stay with me for some time, I can tell. ADA thank you for addressing Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge history in political music form, and for sending love and healing this way.
