The Antarctic research station (one of them; I guess USAian McMurdo?) sponsors one artist per year to come to Antarctica for several months. Kim Stanley Robinson (at Davis, Carmichael) did it one year -- the novel Antarctica came out of that. Seems like a pretty great thing. There should be some sort of compilation of the arts to emerge from that!

Carmichael, that sound absolutely ghoulish. But their heirs thank you for taking the dusty old stuff. At one of the few estate sales I've ever gone to I got some Les Paul and Frank Sinatra 10" LPs. No music hard to get, but nice objects.
