Options October 27, 2021: WATCHING FOR A SOUND: Celebrating the music and productions of Mitch Easter!. (Week four of our HELLRAISER FUNDRAISER!)

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

40 years ago next month Let’s Active played their very first show. To mark the occasion I'm dedicating this entire show to the music and production/engineering/mixing work of the band’s now-legendary front man Mitch Easter, who helped create a new genre of Southern jangle-rock. I interviewed Mitch and asked a few of his peers, collaborators, and clients to share some thoughts and memories as well. Thank you for listening!

That's right, blame it on Dr ken Freeman Stein. Maybe that's one reason why jonesy is always saying keep your face on the ground and keep crawling away from Dr Ken Freeman Stein

Did Mitch Easter get any sleep in the 80s?
  12:28pm Carl G in NYC:

Reading Miles Copland's bio and when talking about IRS records and REM he then dissed both Mitch Easter and The DB's I guess if they both sold more records he would have said something nice!

Room with a view, this sounds different than the version on my old EP
Avatar 12:43pm Hoboken Pete:

I hum this song all the time and I completely forgot it was Let's Active...
Avatar 12:43pm HyperDose:

Faye Hunter the bass player, possibly? Passed away in 2013. Very sad
Avatar 12:43pm Joe B:

@right on cue - same in NJ. Let's Active was all over college radio in NJ - WPRB, WRSU, WTSR ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm efd:

@tim from washington That is the late and very much missed Faye Hunter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm James in ATL:

Someone said there is a recent documentary about the 80s Chapel Hill music scene. Anyone know the name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm medson:

I remember fans of REM in the early days being very protective of the band. Almost quizzing others on the music before accepting new people as fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm tim from washington:

Thanks, efd!

Avatar 12:53pm Joe B:

and even after that they wanted Elliot Mazer to do the second album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm joe mulligan:

Avatar 12:56pm cuspidor:

Big Plans is such a great album!
Avatar 12:58pm Joe B:

@kat - true!
  12:59pm Kat in Chicago:

Ooh, “Fell” is such a dreamy song
Avatar The Evan "Funk" Davies Show Hellraiser 2022 1:02pm Hoboken Jack:

I think Mitch Easter is the first producer I ever knew about. Flash forward to 5 years ago, I'm back in my apartment for the first time in 3.5 months. Friends had removed my clutter so i could maneuver around in a wheelchair, and it was unnerving. But as I wheeled down the hall to my bedroom, I saw on the windowsill my copy of Easter's Dynamico CD. "I'm home," I realized.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm tim from washington:

That's so funny to me that early REM fans were snobs. Weren't they pretty accessible (ie not super obscure and easy to find their records) from the get go?
  1:05pm Joe Mulligan:

I love hearing the personal truth rather than corporate revisionist history
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm efd:

Folks, I'd like to remind you that this is the last week of WFMU's HELLRAISER fundraiser! I'm lagging behind the station overall and would really appreciate some support during this show! If you pledge $50 you can get one of our new t-shirts! The best way to help the station is with a monthly pledge of $10 or more, and if you do that you'll get a THIRD t-shirt and even more swag! Please make a pledge now if you're able and show your appreciation for programs like this: pledge.wfmu.org...
Thank you to everyone who's already pledged!
  1:08pm Joe Mulligan:

If REM didn’t stick to their indie hearts and allowed themselves to become Sammy hagarish the face of American indie may have never been the same
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm efd:

Not gonna lie, I really want to hear Sammy Hagar sing these songs now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm tim from washington:

This sound would have definitely improved 3 Lock Box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm sphere:

Just wanted to say that Every Dog Has His Day is totally one of the 80s albums I pull out almost every couple of weeks. Love it!
Avatar 1:12pm Hoboken Pete:

This is sounding like an up tempo Robyn Hitchcock tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Tommy in Neversink:

I'm from the Winston Salem NC area .Very proud of Mitch and let's Active
Avatar 1:12pm ChrisB.:

John Leckie produced an album by New Jersey band The Proof, released on Nemperor Records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Ken in Fort Worth:

On a tangent, are you going to play any Fetchin Bones?
  1:12pm Joe Mulligan:

Hoboken Pete yes!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm efd:

@Hoboken Jack I love that story. Dynamico is such a great and, it seems, largely overlooked album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm sphere:

YES
  1:14pm Zinn The Mood:

When this record came out I was mainly hard rock and metal fan, beginning to have grave reservations about the latter. I remember British metal magazine Kerrang had a picture of Robert Plant on the cover with a quote about the current metal scene, “I’d rather mow Mitch Easter’s lawn!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

So weird about the early snobbery. I just remember hearing "Radio Free Europe" on college radio and it just knocked me out. When the show announcement came out, I could hardly believe it. Most of my friends didn't care because, hey it wasn't Pink Floyd or <insert class rock band here>.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm efd:

@Ken in Fort Worth they are on the long list of bands I couldn't fit in, I'm afraid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm efd:

had to make a lot of hard choices over the last few days
  1:16pm PJ:

I can see how Leckie’s ideas about how Let’s Active should sound were a shock to the band. The sound is a far cry from the Dukes of Stratosphere and heavy into American AOR of the ‘80s.
Avatar 1:16pm ChrisB.:

Is there a "select all" option for favoriting songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm tim from washington:

I'd compare the sound of Every Dog to X's Aint Love Grand. There's really good songs under the bombastic production.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm efd:

"the ageism is sort of gone as long as you're not actually dead" is such a great line
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm efd:

note that when Mitch says "last Friday" that was actually a couple of Fridays ago
  1:19pm Kat in Chicago:

He still sounds like he’s 25 though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Ken in Fort Worth:

Understood. Thanks! As stated, they were only tangentially related.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Mike Sin:

Great job, EvanFunk! To say that Mitch Easter is a down-to-earth dude would be an understatement. He comes across with a lot of self-awareness unclouded by ego. Really interesting interview.

Swag For Life Member 1:40pm JetLee:

Great interview and show! I was fortunate enough to see Let's Active open for Echo and the Bunnymen when Sara was in the band, and finally met Mitch when he was touring dynamico. Great guy! It really comes across in the interview.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Rick from SC:

Great show. I was lucky to see Let's Active many times in the early 80's in Atlanta and Athens.
  1:41pm Kat in Chicago:

Not really practical at the moment for me to make the trip, but I’d love to be at that Winston-Salem show.
Avatar 1:43pm Bianconeri:

Too young to have caught Let's Active live, so it was a dream come true to open for a Dynamico-era show and actually see him at work in person. He was even better live than I expected -- I guess I'd thought of him so much as a "studio guy"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm efd:

Great show efd! Will have to check the rest out on the archives. I am extremely fortunate to have worked with Mitch in the last few years. Definitely a highlight of my musical life- being at Fidelitoriun and playing solos through a Sovtek pedal with him only a few feet away offering enthusiasm and encouragement. Thanks again!

That was a really well spoken piece! I don't know Big Quiet at all. Apparently, that should change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm efd:

oh you'll like them, Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm tim from washington:

What Handy just wrote. That was a very compelling testimonial.

Hi Pete Galub!
  2:00pm Marisa K:

Oh I so agree with this!! Mitch is one of the best guitarists I've ever seen/heard. He does NOT get enough credit for that!
Avatar 2:01pm Bianconeri:

Holsapple's vocal on Wonder Of Love is incredible -- one of his best on record. It's so effortless and so _him_.
  2:10pm ?:

69% raised. nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm efd:

Frankly I would prefer not nice at this point!
  2:13pm Jett:

Back in the day, NY Rocker used to sponsor my radio show and several others on that station WHBI - FM. So I would play that dB's commercial Everytime I did my show.
  2:14pm Jett:

At the time, I believe you @efd were still at WNYU.
  2:16pm PJ:

Slickee Boys!
  2:17pm Jett:

The Slickee Boys we're pretty cool. I think they did a nice cover of The Squires - Going All The Way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm efd:

@Jett that timing sounds right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm tim from washington:

Cool! That explained another string in in the US/Australia trans-continental feedback loop.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Carmichael:

I knew the earliest iteration of Game Theory, with Nancy Becker and Fred Juhos. We all went to school together and made noise at night. I ended up joining a different band.
Avatar 2:50pm Bianconeri:

2 Steps reissue liner notes contains the incredible story of Mitch meeting C.C.DeVille in a guitar shop and DeVille announcing that he adored 2 Steps and actually playing a bit of one of the songs for him on guitar. Insane rock and roll weirdness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm tim from washington:

Thanks for the hard work on this show, efd! It came out really well. The true testimonials of the latter half of the show are a really nice touch.

You can barely hear the bagpipe on this one, but it's still excellent.

Not as excellent as this tremendous show, though! What a wonderful gift, efd. This was a real radio high point. Can't even thank you enough for what you give us.

Though throwing money at the show is one way to try ... if you can, funksters!

Later on!
