I've found precious few recordings of autoharps in the whole continent of Africa. Yet there should be, I'd think, since they are light-weight substitutes for pianos. I guess if you have a kora, you're well past that kind of music.

Doug Schulkind:

Gideon Nxumalo describes this song thusly...

"ISINTU can loosely be translated as meaning Humanity of Humaneness. This was especially written for Kippie Moeketsi. Here, once again, I tried to use typical African (Township) chord sequences. If you'll notice, the melody on the saxophone is purely pentatonic apart, of course, from the occasional grace notes Kippie throws in. While the melody is a ballad, I've tried to employ off-beat rhythms in the D section on the piano. This, I believe, is the vogue nowadays... a desire to get away from the regular 4/4 beat."

Kippie, after seven years away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Doug Schulkind:

A further explanation behind the title "Scullery Department":

A theme by Moeketsi and is “about” the treatment of the band by a white club owner. The incident is described in Peter Esterhuysen's book Kippie Moeketsi Sad Man of Jazz (Viva Books, 1995): 'One evening the Jazz Espistles were playing in a Johannesburg nightclub. When they took a break the owner led them to the kitchen. He gave the musicians a meal. Then he went back inside his club. While the Epistles were eating, Kippie became very cross. He said, 'By right, you know Dollar, this is all nonsense – this idea of us being taken into the kitchen when there's a break. Are we 'kitchen boys'? Aren't we here to entertain the people?' 'Ja ou pellie,' Dollar answered, 'ons kom nou en dan by die kombuis ... the scullery department.' Kippie started to make up a new song right there in the kitchen. He called his new song 'Scullery Department.'”

@Jeff, I was a pedantic jerk too. The good news is that as I got older I found that I lost the "pedantic" part. So there is hope!

StringOFperils:

May Dick Griffin story (which I may have also told before) was watching Mr. Ibrahim's band here in Toronto, from up close. Abdullah cued the trombone's turn to solo, during a long version of Sathima, and Griffin sort of flew away with it. When he should have dropped back he lost in a transport of pure ecstasy, and kept going, as if in his own world. The band giggled and whispered, but were softly shushed by their leader from the piano who softly said," No, no, let him go. He loves it." And you could see that they knew. They knew THAT feeling very deeply. Griffin kept going, although a tad embarrased. It was beautiful.

Only $880 to go to reach my (admittedly) lofty goal. Help me do it! It would be a tremendous showing for the Drummer Stream collectively. It would boggle the minds of Ken Freedman and admin folk at WFMU to see a stream show have such a fine showing.

Recorded with compatriots Dennis Mpale (trumpet) and Pat Matshikiza (piano) and others, this treasured album's title, "Our Boys Are Doing It" was a direct answer to Hugh Masekela's wonderful album "The Boy's Doin' It." Like Masekela's album , this recording session took place in Lagos, Nigeria.

"Thank you so much... Any occasion to enjoy some previously unheard Kippie is a treasure indeed. His breezy playing on this session is so dreamy and joyful. The trill he plays during his solo on Quaphela made my heart stop. I am grateful to have this."
