Alright then! Can't wait to hear the Todd Haynes interview...caught the movie last night and it was great! Shout-out to Jonas Mekas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Handy Haversack:

It has long been a suspicion of mine that one of (Sweet) Lou's goals was always to alter a song enough when doing it live to prevent anyone from singing along.
  3:10pm P-90:

I’m expecting The Todd & Todd Show to be a classic.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm ChukAmok:

Oh, nice! I'm glad you got to have some!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Spinning Giant:

Thanks @Handy - i knew how to do that - i think my mind jumped to the entirely titillating that there was some kind of internal wfmu bookmarking system (as opposed to browser-based bookmarking)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Handy Haversack:

Spinning Giant, just clicky-star the episode date/title, and then you can find it in your profile. Up at the top where it says "Todd-o-phonic Todd: Playlist from October 16, 2021": click the star to the right.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's not Jackson Browne you don't like - it's YachtRawk Production you don't like. Altho' Jackson Produced WarrenZevon just fine.
Avatar 3:43pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@MFlynn: Yes...he recorded it himself as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Corey:

Good afternoon TOPT and listeners! Today's selections are hitting the spot naturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm MonicaC:

Fun facts about These Days.
  3:44pm Ochre Ogre:

Yes, wished Miriam happy birthday on fb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm TomDash:

Ochre Ogre...yes Mekas was an integral part of the NYC art/music/film fabric for many generations! Haynes dedicates the film to him. He also filmed LOADS of live VU footage at the Dom, Factory and elsewhere - including their first appearance at the psychiatrist convention - all footage is silent 16mm sadly I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm McGroovey:

Amsterdam is one of my fave songs ever.
Avatar 3:47pm Fredericks:

Alejandro Escovedo used to play Amsterdam often in concert.

Raining hard where I live. Velvet Underground and rain go so good together. Great show!
Avatar 3:57pm John L:

My ex-girlfriend and I were going to use I'm Sticking With You as our wedding song. At the time my sister was married to Maureen Tucker's nephew, so we considered asking her to sing at the wedding. The wedding, alas, never happened.

Avatar 3:58pm DouglasInDallas:

Great set so far. Todd Haynes is one of my all-time faves. He was such a gracious guest at the various events I met him at University of North Texas and in Dallas, geez, last century. The split-screens and nonmatching music over vintage footage in the VU movie reminds me of Todd's direction in The Karen Carpenter Story. Looking forward to TOPT's always insightful discussion with him.
Avatar 3:59pm Fredericks:

I had half of 1969 Live on 8-track.
Avatar 4:00pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Fredericks: Oddly enough when the album was released on CD they put it on two separate cd's rather than one double disc. Go figure.
  4:00pm Fatherflot:

I just made a recording of this last week, including the "Why Am I So Shy?" part!!!

  4:04pm Fatherflot:

You can really hear Lou's training at Pickwick on songs like this -- tin pan alley, doo wop. Anyone ever notice that "Waiting For The Man" uses a barbershop quartet chord structure?
  4:04pm Fatherflot:

White Light/White Heat is a doo wop song

Interesting book on the intersection of bands and poetry and (Sweet) Lou's connection to Delmore Schwartz: /"Do You Have a Band": Poetry and Punk Rock in New York City/. Obvs., Patti Smith a huge factor in it as well.
  4:18pm Yuru Chara Sean:

Fun and more fun
  4:18pm Morgan:

i appreciate John Cale bc he was very open about his childhood abuse in his biography, also the fact that he was a total rube and lou reed kind of had to spoonfeed him everything about nyc

I am just tuning in. I am a fan of Todd Haynes (he also filmed some scenes from Far From Heaven across the street from where I live). He did a marvelous job, a work of art in its own, (an understatement, I know) on The Velvet Underground. Thank you Todd, and Todd.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@RevErie: It might have been lack of reward as much as anything that informed Mo's perspectives.
  4:29pm Fatherflot:

All you geetar players---- This is the place to get all the correct tabs for everything VU did . Just remember that the key is that you must tune down every string a whole step, so the Guitar is D, A, F, C, G, D

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Handy Haversack:

  4:30pm Fatherflot:

They tuned the guitars down to accommodate Cale's viola. The only way to get the VU sound correct is to tune down.

Trade-off exemplified: This clearly compelling documentary walled off by Apple in its own ecosystem rather than interested people being able to find it through platforms they might want to support. Though I think the doc is playing in Manhattan still, and other places, if one is close enough to those places to take advantage.

Aren’t most films “walled off”?

Great to hear Todd talking about this! We were in the same dorm and many of the same classes in our freshman year at college, and we shared music a lot. Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'd swear I read a thing with Lou where he said people didn't even realize what a loss breaking up the Lennon-McCartney writing partnership was. As a Songwriter - not hard to imagine Lou having that perspective. In the actual 60s when both bands were going concerns - more likely everybody wanted to make claims for their own unique islands... Other things where Lou said Lennon only sometimes seemed relevant as a Writer to him - but one or two things very much so...
  5:08pm DG:

Thanks for that PIX clip, wow. I know Lou was a huge Dion fan (he's on the "New York" album), & at a benefit Paul Simon did in '87 at MSG, I saw Dion sing "Teenager in Love" with a small back--up group of Lou, Simon, Ruben Blades, James Taylor, Billy Joel & Bruce Springsteen.

  5:14pm Bambi Kino HQ:

Gail Zappa was apparently really pissed that Lou was chosen to induct her late husband into the RRHOF!
  5:14pm Fatherflot:

Lou and Frank did not like each other. Both on Verve. I read Lou somewhere saying he could never get a meeting with the label because Zappa's lawyers were always there.
  5:15pm Mr C:

I only knew Lou very casually during his Sire period.
He asked me to make him a soul tape He loved Eddie and Ernie's "Outcast,' which he asked for me to include. Along with Nick Toches, a DaSilvano regular..
  5:16pm Yuru Chara Sean:

Lou and Frank...now that’s some juxtaposition
  5:16pm Bambi Kino HQ:

Fatherflot:Funny! Lou hated Zappa because Zappa baited him and the Velvets at the Trip in LA in '66, saying "These guys really suck!" and poking fun at their NYC pretensions, etc. Lou never forgave that.
  5:16pm MFlynn:

@Mr C: "Outcast" is a great cut (but I don't have to tell you that). I wonder if knew it from The Animals version at first.
  5:17pm Edward:

Lou talked lotsa shit about Zappa but then wound up inducting him into the R&R Hall of Fame. He also put Dylan down continually, but then did that great “Foot of Pride” at Dyan’s 30th anniversary bash. I don’t think we can take the stuff he said about the competition when he was young and hungry as the last word.
