Options October 31, 2021: Halloween 2021 w/ The Clock Strikes Midnight (From 8 AM to 8 PM EST) + More at 9 PM and beyond...
This year I'm playlisting the Halloween Record Blog by illustrator Drew Friedman from 2011. (Only missing a few) I'll be playing at least one track from each record in the order presented on his list, until I run out of time (plus a bonus track or two and a special musical guest). - Herk "Here are over 180 covers of spooky, horrifying, terrifying, and in some cases ridiculous monster-related, science fiction related/ghost related/gothic-related and Halloween-related LP and singles vinyl album covers. Some are common, some rare and obscure, some great and some awful. You decide." - Drew Friedman (Visit the original blog at: https://drewfriedman.blogspot.com/2011/10/ Also stop by my facebook group "Halloween Records" :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am WR:

Just dug out a shovelware set I got years ago. 50 Horror classics on 12 DVDs! Looks like it has the ones I've not watched yet. Doesn't have the most well known Universals, but they are easily found. It has early classics like Metropolis and Nosferatu and Lon Chaney Sr classic Hunchback and ...Opera up to Night of the Living Dead and Little Shop of Horrors.
Avatar 9:34am Herk Hilligoss:

Nosferatu is still one of the greatest film EVER made!

Avatar 4:16pm Herk Hilligoss:

I just prepared a bowl of candy myself, while prepping the oven to bake a pizza. We usually get around 6 to 8 groups of people these past few years. Most parents take their kids to trunk or treat to be more safe. Ours happened in a neighborhood parking lot last night.
Avatar 4:17pm Herk Hilligoss:

My pleasure! I gotta do something with these records filling up my basement
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm spodiodious:

about to put out honor system candy, and i'm really hoping the legion of squirrels here leave it alone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Scott67:

Fab, did I mention, Mick is keen for the TRASH CULT SHOW to run 3 hours?
💀🤘🗑
Avatar 7:25pm Herk Hilligoss:

Honor system candy is risky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm MHLee:

we once caught my dog slinking to the candy bowel... the dog knew that certain behaviors would get him in trouble so he'd get really low to the ground which stealing candy/raiding trash
Avatar 7:26pm Herk Hilligoss:

Mabye I'll put out a small candy dish while I rush to my sister-in-law's Halloween dinner party during the next hour...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm spodiodious:

but i've found squirrels generally have no honor.

the population of trick-or-treaters around here is on the low side, Herk (though some of the later ones took more than the earlier ones -- was fine with me. i don't eat the leftovers anyway)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm spodiodious:

i love the description of your sneaky dog, MHLee (i know that behavior well)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm MHLee:

I did a 2 hours blues show of spooky blues earlier but my Halloween novelty knowledge is a bit lacking unfortnately

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm MHLee:

This is an early one. I seem to recall Halloween was on the rise in the 1940s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Rich in Washington:

I love that someone would commit their own halloween recording to Record-O-Disc, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm spodiodious:

olo, Hauntis. nice to see you, btw (was just thinking about you earlier in the morning before i logged in here.) miss your shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm MHLee:

With private press records, the question that always hits me is the audience. I'm sure the creator of this would love to know we are listening to it, but what was the initial goal?
Avatar 9:14pm Herk Hilligoss:

I think I can get Valerie to come back. Her Halloween album "Monsteria" is quite interesting, I think she is sending me tracks to play.
Avatar 9:15pm Herk Hilligoss:

Fascinating isn't it MHL?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Hauntis Odder:

Thanks Spodi... Happy Hallows and good to pop in more these days.
Avatar 9:19pm Herk Hilligoss:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Hauntis Odder:

Taking off here for the evening. Sending another Happy Halloween to all. 12+ hours Herk, yea! Super first show Sacrofiguy. Time to eat some chocolate and probably start the 1980 movie Prom Night. Cheers!

Good evening, Herk, had fun tuning with Hauntis today. Bye Bye all.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm spodiodious:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm MHLee:

That is correct
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm MHLee:

I'm still here. I'm working on preparing assignments for a class on infectious diseases and have been since I tuned in... moving slower than I would have liked
Avatar 9:51pm Herk Hilligoss:

Wonderful MHL
Avatar 9:52pm Herk Hilligoss:

As long as there's still listeners I'll keep going
Avatar 9:52pm Herk Hilligoss:

Infectious diseases? What is this class called?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Aitch:

Big call Herk, only 1pm in SE Australia, I'll still be here for hours..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm spodiodious:

also here... now eating. was nice to hear a bit of music. liked what i heard.

i'm about to go catch Bergey's in a few minutes though.

I'm hearing Superman flying sounds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm spodiodious:

happy halloween! thank you for making mine nice :)
Avatar 10:00pm Herk Hilligoss:

I love these John Cage type prepared piano bits
Avatar 10:01pm Herk Hilligoss:

You're welcome! Happy Halloween Spodiodious :)
Avatar 10:01pm Herk Hilligoss:

You're right! These are Superman flying sounds :)
Avatar 10:02pm Herk Hilligoss:

The fake human cat sounds always cracked me up as a kid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm MHLee:

The piano part reminds a bit of the messier bits of soft machine's Joy of the Toy... specifically whatever the song is called before a "A Certain Kind"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm MHLee:

I recognize albums by sound better than name... I know what sound comes next and not the title
Avatar 10:04pm Herk Hilligoss:

ooh! I should check that out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Aitch:

Superman certainly giving it to the poor victim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm MHLee:

Oh wait just recalled the album is self-titled. It has the song joy of a toy... which is the bassist's first solo albums name...
Avatar 10:07pm Herk Hilligoss:

Anyone else grow up with this record? I had the later issue with the fantastic painting that I would stare at for hours.
Avatar 10:07pm Herk Hilligoss:

I'll definitely look it up MHL :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm MHLee:

I'm a big British pysch fan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm MHLee:

Wonder where the skeletons at the piano photo comes from
Avatar 10:15pm Herk Hilligoss:

I wonder the same thing...
Avatar 10:16pm Herk Hilligoss:

Do you guys wanna hear more Valerie music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm MHLee:

I enjoyed it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm MHLee:

Also really dig the cover
Avatar 10:20pm BC Sterrett:

Thank you. I based it off those mystery novels that always have a lady running from a house on the cover.
Avatar 10:20pm Herk Hilligoss:

Oops, I had to log back in and my name changed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm MHLee:

Kinda Tim Burton meets Porky's Adventures in Wackyland... but I can see that too now that you mention it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Aitch:

Jekyll / Hyde thing?
Avatar 10:22pm Herk Hilligoss:

Yes, whenever I drink eggnog :)
Avatar 10:22pm Herk Hilligoss:

I'll bring Valerie back after this record...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm MHLee:

Interestingly, I have to refresh to see songs added but chat auto updates
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm WR:

back for more
Avatar 10:34pm Herk Hilligoss:

I do too! I had to refresh to make this one appear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm WR:

Yours Valerie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm MHLee:

I liked the ghastly quality of the vocals on that one. I appreciate the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm MHLee:

our music director would appreciate this, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm MHLee:

I DJ elsewhere at uni
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm MHLee:

Tom Waits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm WR:

Thank you for playing that. I heard a little Brian Ferry / Roxy Music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm WR:

More more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm WR:

Valerie Valerie Valerie
Avatar 10:50pm Herk Hilligoss:

I can send a bandcamp link to Valerie's album, or we can make and send out some physical copies. WOuld you like one for DJing MHL?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm WR:

I worked in record stores from 70 to 75 and this was the standard record we sold to every school group doing a haunted house.

Bandcamp link? Yes.
Avatar 10:52pm Herk Hilligoss:

swoodyrecords.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm MHLee:

I'd love to have it. I'd have to figure out how to work it into the shows I play, but I'd love to at least play it.
Avatar 10:53pm Herk Hilligoss:

No money from the bandcamp goes to Valerie. lol Just get it for free :)
Avatar 10:54pm Herk Hilligoss:

Do you use digital files MHL or do you mostly do physical copies like me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm MHLee:

Looking at it I think I can play the back half in my regular "fantasy/ambient" show without flinching
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm WR:

Swoody bandcamp was easy to search. You have lots of releases in addition to Valerie's recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Aitch:

There's an adults only Real and Stimpy episode Log Sawing this reminds me of
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm MHLee:

I digitalize everything I get and then shove it in a server.
Avatar 10:56pm Herk Hilligoss:

Ok :) She's excited that people actually care to hear it.
Avatar 10:57pm Herk Hilligoss:

We do have a few other releases on Swoody. We used to be involved with that label years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm MHLee:

This album is intense. "YOU ARE FALLING TO YOUR DEATH"
Avatar 11:00pm Herk Hilligoss:

As a kid in elementary school, this track would make me bust up. Now that I'm older and the world has changed, and I speak Chinese, it makes me cringe a bit. History is what it is
Avatar 11:01pm Herk Hilligoss:

The cat sounds on this record made my cat go crazy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm WR:

LOL, OK, possession by Chinese? You've learned Chinese? Not an easy language.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm MHLee:

LOL.... I kinda laughed because I wasn't expecting it. I was thinking about some of her other lines thinking "well yeah, I suppose that is an old time non-PC way to say thing"... then that
Avatar 11:02pm Herk Hilligoss:

Still learning it :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm MHLee:

It will be one of those super-rare private press releases that garner attention
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm MHLee:

I've gotten super into private press and obscure releases trying to hunt down the origin of a song that was recorded from radio in the 1970s but no one has identified
Avatar 11:13pm Herk Hilligoss:

Private Press stuff is awesome. I love people just releasing stuff from their bedrooms :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Aitch:

Sounds like a rough Motel Mr Herk
Avatar 11:15pm Herk Hilligoss:

rough Motel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm MHLee:

Most of the stuff I play on my regular show probably counts as private press. I play a lot of dungeonsynth which is basically fantasy video game soundtracks for games that don't exist and orchestras written by someone with a synth in a bedroom w
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm MHLee:

Also a tremendous amount is released on cassette... interestingly enough
Avatar 11:16pm Herk Hilligoss:

Oh amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm MHLee:

Let It Be... Naked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm MHLee:

Some of the VU outtakes are better in my opinion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm WR:

Dialectic
Avatar 11:23pm Herk Hilligoss:

What is VU again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm MHLee:

Velvet Underground
Avatar 11:24pm Herk Hilligoss:

Oh my gosh, you are so right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm MHLee:

Sorry, I'm 25 going on 80 (at least)
Avatar 11:29pm Herk Hilligoss:

No that's great
Avatar 11:31pm Herk Hilligoss:

The ambience of this record is so great. I used to be against it because it wasn't the "original"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm MHLee:

Still it lacks the "I want you to imagine yourself being eaten by martians"
Avatar 11:34pm Herk Hilligoss:

Yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm MHLee:

I do get the feeling though that the ambiance of this record is connected... not random... like there is a story in the noises
Avatar 11:37pm Herk Hilligoss:

Yes, that's what I like about it, instead of "Listen to this sound, now here's a different sound, etc."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm MHLee:

There an artist I would pair in a mix with this but I'm blanking on her name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm MHLee:

Not that it's the same sound, but the artist I was thinking of is called Sunday Driver. I know nothing about them and hadn't thought about them in forever.
Avatar 11:50pm Herk Hilligoss:

Huh, I'd be interested to hear them :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm MHLee:

sundaydriver.bandcamp.com...

Kinda more dark cabaret... not sure how I even found them... by accident somehow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm MHLee:

Rats was the standout track to me
Avatar 11:55pm Herk Hilligoss:

Love your Fleischer ghost image!
Avatar 11:56pm Herk Hilligoss:

ooh, bandcamp link. Thank you :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm WR:

I'm fading. It's been fun. And happy to hear Valerie's work. I remember you played Dots on your last weekly show.

I look forward to future Herk Hilligoss Holiday broadcasts.

Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12am MHLee:

Doctor Sarcofiguy played the original earlier. I agree with whoever said you should send some of your stuff to him.
Avatar 12:13am Herk Hilligoss:

Good night WR, thanks for being with us :)
Avatar 12:14am Herk Hilligoss:

I did see this on Sarcofiguy's set list, I shall be sending him some files...
Avatar 12:32am Herk Hilligoss:
